We sure got "socked" with snow this week. The Pasty Cam actually began twelve years ago in Eagle River at the home in the top photo. That’s Charlie’s better half Edie (aka “The Designated Scooper”) yesterday afternoon, digging the family out of about 3 feet of the white stuff

It's a good thing Ashlee Harvey started training her boys to shovel the driveway a few days before our big snows hit. That way they were conditioned a bit, before having to move the big drifts that came with all the winds and LES snow we’ve received. These youngsters look like they know what to do with that mini Yooper Scooper and kid size shovel. Get them helping when they're young and willing, then make it a fun at the same time and they might just continue on with the job for years to come. :->

Here in SE Michigan we've been having what the weatehr guys call a "wintry mix": snow, followed by sleet, followed by rain, and followed by snow. Most of that ws in the course of one day; right now we havea dusting. We're too far east for LES.

Now that's a lot of snow! We only got 11 in. tues. night, but it was no problem for our D-17 to move away.

With hold food and clothes until they help...

amazingly effective.

For several years, while my mother was living with my sister, I would visit the Copper Country in the fall. When I returned home on one of these visits I brought home a snow scoop and gave it, with some fanfare, to my wife as a gift. On the next trip I brought home an ice chipper for her. The next trip I returned with a snow rake for the roof for her. The last trip she got a nice snow shovel. My wife has a good sense of humor and enjoyed these surprises.

She likes the snow scoop, and uses it, but I prefer the shovel and the snow rake. We like to remove the snow together, as a team, and consider it exercise, but then we do not get much snow in Berkley.

Take away the Video Games and the TV until they help...

"With hold food and clothes until they help..."

Ooh, that could land you in jail. Best to withhold TV, video games, stereo, iPod -- anything that they enjoy.

I was expecting a completely different ending to dulongj's story. After bringing home all the snow removal implements as gifts for the wife, I figured her gift back to him would be a divorce lawyer!
Glad it didn't happen that way.

We certainly have been socked in...

Does anyone know if Cliff Drive is being plowed this winter? All of this snow is great for snowshoeing, and I'd like to get off the trails a little bit more...

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, December 11, 2009 - 02:41 pm:

In years past Cliff Drive is not plowed, don't know if that changed this year

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, December 11, 2009 - 02:46 pm:

Steve -- I know that it wasn't plowed last year, but the year before (at least) it was plowed. I have no clue why that changed though.

Whew! As I write this, Winter advisories are now over 4 my neck of the woods. Thought I was going 2 snow blow my driveway a 3rd day in a row, but wasn't that bad when I got home from work.

When we left downstate, Bills friends gave him a snowblower, a lawnmower, a weedwacker, about 3 garbage cans, those big ones and a leafblower. He told them they can come up here and show him how they work.

The snow is wonderful and so is the cold but I left Detour Village many years ago and now enjoy the Mountains of Virginia. Great web site, keep up the good work.

Bob Rice (ki4sis, in case you are Ham Radio Operator, I'm on 20 meters everyday about 3 pm.

For anyone curious, I went snowshoeing yesterday -- Cliff Drive is indeed plowed for about 2.5 miles from its north end (the south end is thoroughly closed). Anyone looking to get in to any of the Cliff Mine trails, or the North American gap, can still do so (even in a tiny car like mine!).
