Even though the first day of winter, doesn't officially arrive until December 21st, it struck early yesterday here in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The second picture by Chris Koskiniemi is how it looked Friday morning - just a dusting - and by nightfall there was around a foot of accumulation in many areas. Jon and Katriina Hopper were on their way back home from Houghton to Eagle River, and Katriina captured the mood of that drive with the top nighttime shot. Anybody have any ideas where it was taken? There aren't many working telephone booths left in the U.P., so that narrows it down.

We're finally getting Winter weather in Northern lower Michigan, also.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 08:17 am:

I'm heading again out again! I'm hoping I'm heading into no snow!! We'll soon get ours, I'm sure. The snow was pretty, I'll say that. But it could have held off until the 24th.

Have a great weekend everybody!

By Sarah Stewart (Bootjackkid) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 08:21 am:

What a gorgeous scene! Nothing like that down here in Baltimore. We too are getting ready for some snow. Only 1-3" but still enough to get people worked up....the have no idea what REAL snow is!!

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 09:31 am:

The phone booth is in Mason in what used to be Nelson's Used Cars.

Ouch! I guess this means that I will have to winterize the Wing. Or, maybe get some spiked tires that they use for ice racing...hmmm.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 09:44 am:

We were told it was coming and it did. We have snow! It looks so pretty out back in the woods all covered in the white stuff. It won't last long I bet,Barbie and me wish it would, you don't miss it until you see it like this. Trigger's the memory to day's spent in Michigan so long ago now.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 09:53 am:

wow ... a phone booth !!!!
That picture looks a lot like something drawn by Terry Redlin. Very very good photo

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 10:20 am:

Even got some snow in Baton Rouge, La., which is
rare. They say it came from Texas. Get any there,
Captain?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 10:31 am:

We didn't get any accumulation where we are out in the country; it was just in the air pretty thick, but downtown Houston and points south and east got 2-4 inches. Galveston even got some snow on the beaches.

This morning you'd never know it snowed yesterday. Not a cloud in the sky, nice bright sunshine, and 22 degrees outside.....

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 10:43 am:

Capt. Paul, were you living in Houston the year we Winter Texans got 4"-5" on Christmas Eve in the Rockport/ Corpus Christi area? People went nuts!!! Snow angels, snow forts, sledding on strange vehicals! Must have been 2001 or so. I'll never forget it. It even lasted into Christmas Day a few hours

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 12:29 pm:

These two photos are very good. I'm so thankful for the photos of the day, and for the cams, where I can see what's going on up there. When you're not there, these are the closest things to being in two places at one time. Thank you everyone.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 02:11 pm:

MsKatie: Nope, we were in Las Vegas, NV when we too got snow in the valley that December, which was in 2004. I believe that is also when Victoria got something like 12 inches of snow and had no way to move it, causing the city to shut down for 2 days.

I was actually surprised when I heard the NWS issued a winter storm warning for yesterday. I told people that where I come from, this was just a minor annoyance. We had to laugh yesterday because on the news they were saying how many things were cancelled because of the snow and wintry conditions; the 2 best ones I heard were:

1) The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Galena Park, and
2) A high school playoff football game, because the snow covered the field and the yard markers, making it impossible to play the game........

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 02:32 pm:

That is funny Capt. Paul. We've been to games where you could hardly see the other end of the field & we wore smowmobile suits, boots along with big heavy blankets & it didn't stop anyone from coming.

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 06:38 pm:

Been to those games too, Cheryl, and the pickups with plows cleaned the field in between quarters! LOL....Only in the U.P. eh!

By Sandy G (Artessss) on Sunday, December 6, 2009 - 01:28 am:

I remember our team playing in all kinds of winter weather as long as it wasn't lightening not that it would in snow, but did in rainstorms. I'm in North Central TX and we had flurries for about an hour and nothing stuck...I was so glad! A couple of years ago I woke on Valentine's Day to snow everywhere covering the ground, but it was gone by afternoon. Thats the kind of snow I like! A lot of people canceled doctor's appointments so they upped mine from 4:15 to 1:30...in and out in a jiffy!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, December 7, 2009 - 12:04 pm:

This looks so much like an Edward Hopper painting. I keep returning to it again and again.

By June Ellen Ackroyd (Jeackroy) on Friday, December 11, 2009 - 04:54 pm:

It was so nice to see the beautiful, somewhat nostalgic picture by Katriina Hopper. June Ackroyd

Hello, that phone booth belongs to me ! i bought the
car lot early last year. someone told me they saw it
on the internet , so i had to check it out. Must
have taken that picture about the same time i did
because i have one almost identical to it on my
desktop when i went down there to shoot some photos
of the first snow !
