Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 07:17 am:

I'd like to introduce you to Dora and her kid, Reese. Jane Nordberg recently made a visit to the Ross Jarvi farm in Chassell, where she snapped this shot of the mother goat and her kid. I'm guessing there are many different types of goats, so if there are any zoologists (amateur or otherwise) out there in Pasty Land, maybe you can help us identify this good looking pair. They sure seem to be enjoying being photographed... it even looks like Reese is smiling!

Just a reminder, in case you missed it, Day in History recounts the story of the Edmund Fitgerald, lost on this day in 1975.

Fitzgerald

By
Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 07:43 am:

Remembering the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald, including Cotton's Dad, who sank into Mother Superior in a great storm, 34 years ago today! Gordon Lightfoot's song immortalizes them. Cotton, we're thinking about you today.

Dora & her kid look like they thinking about what fun they can get into next, while they are looking cute in the process. These aren't pygmy goats, but pygmy goats can wreak havoc in a hurry!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 07:49 am:

When I tell people here in Texas that the Great Lakes have the power to sink ships as large at the Fitz, I'm usually met with disbelief and "Those are only lakes; they can't possible get waves that big!"

I'm sure I won't be the only PastyCammer today to mention the Fitz today, and also to remember those brave souls who fought the gales of November so valiantly that night 34 years ago. Also our thoughts to Cheryl and all of the people touched by this loss as well; may this day never be forgotten in Great Lakes maritime history.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 07:51 am:

It looks like these goats are saying "Sheep-up or sheep-out". If ewe know what I mean.

By Sconie (Sconie) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 07:57 am:

Those might be what are termed "Nubian" (sometimes Anglo-Nubian) goats---they are characterized by a "Roman" nose and have quite elongated ears.

P.S. "Billy Goats" are, by definition, male goats---something tells me that it is unlikely that "Dora" is a billy goat. :-)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 08:31 am:

Being a farm girl that I am, I have to admit those goats are adorable. But then there is another "goat" more desirable, the 1966-67 Pontiac GTO!

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 08:39 am:

Thinking of you today, Cheryl. Your dad is in God's embrace.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 08:44 am:

The family, loved ones, and friends of The Edmund Fitzgerald gallent crew grace my thoughts today.

By Deborah L. Inman (Lakegirl) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 09:15 am:

Along with remembering the great crew of The Fitz today, I would like to remember Todd A. Inman who passed away this day in 1995. Todd has family in Michigan. Our son and I go up to Split Rock to remember him and the crew of the Fitz. I just wanted to share that today. We really enjoy Pasty cam, it has lifted me up on some tough days! Thank you!!

The Great Lake Dawson Museum on Belle Isle is having a function tonight in honor of the Fitz and her crew.

By Graham Baker (Grahamhcmvc1) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 09:43 am:

Hey Charlie

We last met at Jack and Carol Treganowans in Eagle River back in 2007 when I visted with the Holman Climax Male Voice Choir.
You kindly loaned me a cable to connect to the internet, Jack & Carol still have the part.

The goats are Golden Guernseys originating from the Channel Islands near France.

We had a pair of these in the mid 80's, which we used to milk twice a day by hand, and in all weathers. Quite a shock for the goats when your hands were freezing cold !!!!!!!

I check into Pasty.com most days, to catch up on life in the UP. It helps to remind me of the great times I have had there.......and if all goes well should return in 2010/2011.

What has happened to the Lift Bridge webcam. Just like me, it seems to be stuck in the past !!!!

My best wishes to all for the coming Christmas and New Year.........hope you winter isn't too long.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 09:47 am:

Our prayers go out today to those who lost their lives with the sinking of the EDMUND FITZGERALD. It has a special meaning for me as I had sailed with 3 of these individuals and grew up 2 blocks from Cottons grandparents. I will attend the short memorial services on the Detroit River in the city of River Rouge tonite at 6 p.m.

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 10:21 am:

These seem to be the friendliest goats I've ever seen! They look like they're so happy! Very cute picture!

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 10:25 am:

Most of you might know my husband Nate for his wild kayaking adventures, but recently he had quite an adventure (or scare) sailing on Lake Michigan. Once more, we're lucky he's alive and I'm starting to wonder if he has 9 lives.
Eversince he's been back from his sailing trip he's taken a large interest in ship wrecks and crazy weather on the Great Lakes. So here's to the men who lost their lives on the Fitzgerald! And may God keep my husband alive for AT LEAST another 50 years!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 10:45 am:

I heard the ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald on my way to work this morning. My favorite lake can turn nasty fast.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 10:47 am:

Hi Graham - hope all is well on the other side of the pond.

Tomorrow I will try to reset the Bridge Cam while in Hancock. Perhaps we need to find a sponsor to spring for a new one.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 11:01 am:

My daughter asked me when I woke up this morning did I remember this is the day Grandpa died. I cannot help but remember. The 9th & 10th of November are hard days for me. The 9th because I remember that day is the beautiful day that they left from Superior, Wisconsin on a trip & the next evening they were lost in one of the worst storms of the century on Lake Superior.
Thank you for your thoughts & prayer on this day. I miss Dad but it is nice to think others think of him & his fellow shipmaters too.YOu are all special people to me on Pasty.

By Rachel Schreiner (Mooselover) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 02:08 pm:

God bless all those lost on the Great Lakes, and their families and friends.

Capt. Paul, I know what you mean. Folks forget that Lake Superior is an inland sea.

Mary, do you have any pictures of the lake during a huge storm? "Twas the witch of November come stealin'"

Mary says: None that really show the rath of Lake Superior that the Edmund Fitzgerald and crew experienced, but this one by Shawn and Brian Malone shows the Big Lake pretty stirred up. It appeared on these pages back on Nov. 6, 2006:

Splashing and Crashing

By
Doug (Greenhermit) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 03:00 pm:

The night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down is also the night that the chip pile fire at Ontonagon came ablaze in earnest - and came very near to engulfing the paper mill and whole town in flames. Fanned by Lightfoot's "hurricane west wind", burning woodchips eerily filled the night air with streams of fire, blowing over the mill and across the highway toward town. It was probably the accompanying blizzard of snow and sleet that saved everything from ending up in ashes.

That day was a far cry from today's mid-fifties, blue skies and sunshine.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 04:59 pm:

In memory of the "Fitz" crew, today.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 06:03 pm:

My favorite quote of Lake Superior

"...those who have never seen SUPERIOR get an inadequate, even inaccurate idea by hearing
of it spoken of as a lake..though its waters are fresh and crystal, SUPERIOR is a SEA..It is wild,
masterful and dreaded...."

Reverend George Grant - Sandford Fleming Expediton - 1872

May all those that lost loved ones be at peace.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 06:18 pm:

I have a few of Lake Superior in one of her angrier moods; nothing like the night of November 10, 1975 though:

Cheryl, may God comfort you and your family on this anniversary of a very sad day in history!
Mary, thanks for posting the goat photo......now if I owned Dora and Reese, they'd probably be living IN my house. Such sweet faces.:)

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.

Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.

The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.

The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashing
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane West Wind

When supper time came the old cook came on deck
Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya
At 7PM a main hatchway caved in
He said fellas it's been good to know ya.

The Captain wired in he had water coming in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the words turn the minutes to hours
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd fifteen more miles behind her.

They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the ruins of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.

And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they say, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

2 excellent subjects of interest today!
We had up to 8 goats at one time of 3 species. 2 looked exactly as these pictured, same color but still with their horns. We always were under the impression and were told by breeders that ours like these pictured were "Nubians" One was a not neutered male "billy" father of triplets which we named "Faith, Hope & Charity" We had to sell 2 so we kept "Hope" which looked exactly like her father as pictured here. She lived 14 years which they say is the average life span of a goat. We were very disappointed (and of course sad) to find they only lived that long, I had always thought 20 to 25 years. Goats are said to be as intelligent as a dog and I believe this to be true. We had one that was a small "African Pygmy" species and she did indeed love to come in the house and walk around, lay down by the woodstove with the dogs and cats. She loved to walk upstairs also. Unfortunately goats can be trained to about anything a dog or cat can but be housebroken so she had her stall in the "barn" to be in regularly! Un-neutered male "billys" are really smelly and mean natured so ours had his own little shed way out back. We eventually sold him ("Zag") where he was brought out to a large horse farm where goats co-habit well with horses even having a calming effect on the horses.

This pic is my niece/Godchild Janelle holding baby "Faith" back in the 80s! Couldn't find any other pics available of any of the other goats.

This is the "Arthur M Anderson" at the foot of our road anchored on the St. Clair River. I took this pic in January 2006.
This is the ship I understand that struggled to come to the Fitzgeralds aid that fateful night.

Great picture dad! The goats bring back good memories. My girls say that's a precious "Hallmark" picture that belongs on a calendar! Enjoyed the freighter posts too everyone.
