With all the recent talk about possible Post Office closings around the country, I thought this would be a timely photo captured by Chris Anderson. It shows what constitutes the Lac La Belle Post Office...an outgoing mailbox, larger boxes for parcels, a bulletin board for announcements and individual resident's mailboxes. No worries about this "office" being closed, that's for sure!

The second photo was taken down the same road, just a bit further along at Bete Grise. Karla Kaulfuss took this shot of the channel opening that joins the Lac La Belle waters with Lake Superior. If you could pan this photo to the right, you'd see the Mendota Lighthouse and then to the left, you'd find the Bete Grise sandy beach.

Just a reminder that there is plenty of Bete Grise sandy shoreline available for the public's use on the north end of this stretch of beach. The end toward the channel has a number of residential homes, of which we encourage you to respect their privacy.

I love Lac La Belle and Bete Grise! Thanks for the great shots!

That's a lot of mailboxes.

I'm not sure but if you build a small building (shed) around them, put in a stamp machine, and raise a flagpole, you'll have a post office.

Nice area...also close to Bare Bluff.

No mailbox on the end of a 10' pole for 'winter delivery?'

Would these be Rural Route addresses?

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 07:57 am:

Anyone have a guess to the number of mailboxes there are??? I guess is 98.5.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 08:17 am:

With all the scenic beauty Lac La Belle has to offer...but, it's those mailboxes that come to my mind first when I think about this area!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 08:29 am:

John, would that .5 be a seasonal resident? They got rid of the rural route addresses a few years ago, and because of that I can never remember my Uncles address since there are more #'s involved now.

When we come up at the end of this month, this is one of the places we're going to do some fishing. What a lovely spot!

Great Photos! My favorite spot to go boating. While U.P. there at the end of July, we spread 1/2 of dad's ashes in front of Bare Bluff in the big lake, he loved to go boating out there. The channel is a "no wake zone" Im always tempted to rip through there wide open, but I don't. lol

I have frequently seen kayakers go from Lac Labelle to Montreal River Falls. I always thought it would beautiful to see Bare Bluff, Smith Fisheries and the surrounding hill sides from Lake Superior. Although, from my own experiences Superior can get very rough in 10 minutes.

Bob, sometimes less then 10, we've been out to Keystone and Manitou island when things got a little wild, one must respect her, that's forsure!

I think the Perseid Meteor Shower is tonight for anyone who is lucky enough to be able to watch it.
Why don't they schedule these events on the weekend :)?
And speaking of events, the Dream Cruise is happening on Woodward Ave. this weekend. See ya on the strip Dudes and Dudetts.

By Rachel Schreiner (Mooselover) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 03:19 pm:

I'll bet the meteor shower would be spectacular to watch from Brockway Mountain.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 03:31 pm:

Alex, I live two blocks from Woodward and the parade in Berkley on Friday is really great. I hang around the Print Stop on Coolidge and Twelve so stop by and say hello. My grandson will be selling water, he is six, from my side yard. He just loves making money. Of course I have to buy the water and the ice, but he gets all the proceeds. Corner of Mortenson and Franklin under the big oak tree.
