Last summer we featured a number of landmarks from Gay, including the old school. As you can see by the poster, the Keweenaw County Historical Society has taken on the challenge of restoring it, with lots local folks pitching in to help. This was mentioned in the recent press release from the State Historical Society, when it gave KCHS with the Superior Award. We look forward to the afternoon and evening of music coming up at the end of the month.

Thanks for all the comments about our "history minute" each day. Today concludes the four-part Day in History about the only person wounded in the Toledo War back in 1835. In case you've ever wondered why the U.P. is not a part of Wisconsin :o)

Sounds like fun. But we'll be in St. Ignace that evening! Can't wait!

Charlie: I had forgotten about the "Day in History." Thanks for the
reminder. I went back and listened to the history of the Toledo
strip. Without a doubt, we natives of Michigan got the better end
of that deal. Though on the football field, things haven't been
working out as well. Thanks for educating us on this matter.

Like many doings in the Copper Country over the years, the ability to contribute is reserved only for those local residents of the Copper Country.

If the many thousands of former Copper Country residents and UP aficionados scattered far and wide wanted to send a cash donation for the benefit of the school's restoration where would they mail their checks to?

Wonderful that the school is being restored. What are the intended uses?

I remember Reed Harjala from back in the mid 60's when he played in a band called Headchoppers Ltd. Glad to see he's still rockin' and rollin'.

I have waited a long time for my old school to be restored to its glory. I went to school there in the late 40's and early 50's. One teacher for all eight grades. Wow! Donations should be earmarked for the Gay School. Consider joining as we are the largest historical society in Michigan. A local artist has done a painting of the school which is a fund raiser with raffle tickets. Drawing will be in Sept. and you need not be present to win. I have seen the painting and it is outstanding. Introduce yourself to me at the reunion or the music fest. Should be a fun evening.

If you were in Gay on the 4th of July, you would have seen a new flag pole with our flag flying. Sure looked good. Also a thank you to all of you who stopped at our bake sale. Did you notice that the steps to the school have been redone? Looks great. Thank you guys for the work you have done.
