The Presque Isle River is the largest river that runs through the Porcupine Mountains near Ontonagon. Several falls can be found along these waters and we're featuring two of them today, courtesy of Cari Raboin. The falls weren't labeled in Cari's gallery, so I'm hoping that I've matched the correct falls with the correct name. :->

The first is the Manido Falls, which in the native Ojibwa language means, spirit or ghost. The sign that accompanies the falls tells us that, "...the amber-colored water and the persistent foam that you notice beneath the waterfalls, is largely the result of tannins and other water-soluble plant compounds that wash into the river...".

Nawadaha Falls is the other featured falls today, also located on the Presque Isle River. In the Ojibwa language, its name means, "In the midst of a rapids." The display states that this is an appropriate name, especially in the springtime, when melting snow and rain create this falls peak flow of nearly 12,000 gallons of water flowing over each second. That's a lot of water, folks! The sign also lets you know the various fish that inhabit this river and falls area.

Looks like another couple spots to add to my "must see" list, around the U.P.

The Porkies have so many beautiful sites; it takes days to see and experience all of its beauty. When I lived in the Copper Country, I spent a lot of time seeing the breath taking sites in Houghton and the Keweenaw. It wasn't until a few years back that I met a very dear friend who grew up in Green (a small community in Ontonagon County)that I was able to visit and enjoy quite a few of the beautiful areas around Ontonagon. Even now when I go home to the UP, I always try to make a trip to Ontonagon to see more of it's natural beauty.

I want to thank all the special people who are willing to share their photos with Mary, so those of us who are not able to be there can still enjoy our favorite place-the UP. Again, thanks!

I was there in September of last year, similar shots, less water. These are definitly Spring time falls. We did a little tour of falls on the UP during that trip and I have to say my favorite were the O-kun-de-kun falls just north of Bruce Crossing, MI. It is a really lovely spot and the falls are small but lend themselves to really great photography.

Gorgeous photos, Cari, thank you! And thank you so much, Mary, for including more photos from the western U.P. lately. I spent my teen years in that area, so of course I'm somewhat biased, but it really is one of the most beautiful areas of the Northland. I'm coming up for a visit in three weeks (both the Copper Country and Gogebic Co.), so I'll get to see some of that beauty myself -- my first visit in four years. I can't wait! Thanks again for sharing!

Mary says: Lisa (Sisugirl) ~ I'm always excited when I find photos from the western AND the eastern end of the U.P., too. We don't get enough from those areas, as many of the photos tend to be from the Keweenaw.
