Most Yoopers wait until the Big Lake warms up to take a dip in the water, but Art Brabbs spotted a couple of hearty souls out there braving the elements in Marquette. Guess some folks will do anything to get in that first surf of the season. As for me, I'll wait until it warms up a bit before I head into Lake Superior... maybe around August or so.

if you ask me, i don't believe lake superior ever warms up. but i do remember as kids we could not wait to jump into the lake.

Wow those folks are diehard to try that right now. Amazing pics!!

Perhaps these poor guys were forced to do this as some sort of NMU fraternity hazing or something. Do you think it's possible Uncle Chuck?

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Friday, April 10, 2009 - 09:04 am:

I think it was 1987, Easter Sunday was around April 19, and unbelievably the temperature was 90 degrees that day. However, the lake wasn't nearly so warm. To keep the beer cold we put it in a duffle bag with a rope tied to the handle and hung it from an old tree lying in the water. The rope came untied, and I got elected to wade out into thigh-deep water and retrieve the beer. Boy, was the water cold that day!

Too funny I was just telling a friend how warm it was that Easter in "87"! We had Easter dinner outside on the picinc table it was fun!

I can remember as kids, at my Uncle's Camp on Bete Gris, jumping into the lake after being in the sauna for awhile. That lake was never warm!

By Tom (Tom) on Friday, April 10, 2009 - 12:30 pm:

I remember taking a hot sauna in Paulson's sauna on Rabbit Bay and then running like heck into the lake. The water seemed find---------for a while.
Such good days on a beautiful beach.

I never posted here before, but when Tom mentioned Paulsons' sauna at Rabbit Bay, I nearly fell over. My grandfather built the camp next door to the Paulson camp, the Honkala camp. So we visited every summer and I know exactly what you're saying when you ran to the lake! I tried that once with my cousin, running from our sauna to the lake, but by the time we reached the lake we had cooled off and entering that water was cold!

That water looks so cold! I can't imagine surfing in it even with a
wet suit. More power to them. I do remember a bunch of us
(Suomi College students) spending a Saturday afternoon about
this time of year at the breakers with a case of Pabst. The more
we drank the more we thought we'd dive into the lake for the
heck of it. Luckily we didn't drink THAT much. Love the UP, can't
wait till we go up this summer.
