I wonder how many people can say they walked on Lake Superior, out to Grand Island in the Munising area? In case you didn't know, it's three quarters of a mile across from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Jeff Kalember admitted that he was a bit nervous about making that trek over Lake Superior ice. That is until he talked to an ice fisherman in the area that told him the ice was about 2 feet thick there. Jeff and his son snowshoed over recently and brought back these photos that show the beginning of the meltdown between the mainland and the island. Sure looks like it was a "grand" day for their adventure!

This reminds me of the cliffs in Jacobsview where the Jutila farm use to be. There was a long finger of land that extended into the water and there was a beautiful beach on each side. When we were kids we would play there all the time. I just loved those sandstone cliffs.

Sorry everyone. I meant to say Jacobsville.
I guess I have been away to long.

The awesome ice pics today really enhance the rickety looks of the old lighthouse. Gives the lighthouse a bit of beauty in it's own sense.

Wow! Look at that wall of ice. I really wish I had done that trek myself, it looks absolutely amazing. Good pics. :)

Is the lighthouse the East Channel Light of Grand Island?

By Barbara Whiteside (Bobbeo60) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 09:15 am:

My favorite of all the Lake Superior lighthouses....what a nice view of it.

Great pics today. Counting the days before I make my annual trip up to Lake Linden-65 days. Can't wait to get back up there. It is like heaven to get back to my roots.

That is beautiful, I would love to see that in the winter.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 10:57 am:

Janie T - yes, that's the Grand Island East Channel light. We walked right down by it and around it too.

Of notable interest, at the big pow-wow of world dignitaries in London yesterday, the Queen Mother had the good taste to serve up 'mini Cornish pasties'. Now there's a lady with STYLE!!!

"the Queen Mother"

Serving pasties from the grave? She died on March 30, 2002, at the age of 101.

After her husband's death, she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter, Elizabeth II.

Hi all
My calendar at work, for this month of April, has a picture of the mouth of the Hurricance River at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It's sunny, with the water gently flowing and a flowering branch artfully framing the foreground. No snow anywhere. I'll leave it to you Yoopers to tell me what month such a view would be probable.

The picture sure promotes spring fever; I'd love to be able to step into the scene.

Wow, look, the ice is gone, all of a sudden, from the canal!
