By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 06:26 am:

Recently, Jamie Harter's morning commute to work was interrupted briefly by a roadblock of the animal persuasion. She snapped these cattle photos on the Rice Lake Road, outside of Lake Linden, where that first bovine was looking at her with an expression that says, "What do you think you're doing on my road?" Then in the second shot, those two don't seem to care one way or the other that she's there, except for a sideways glance to make sure of what she's doing. They're obviously "on the loose" and it makes you wonder if the snow we received this winter might have piled up just high enough for them to walk right over their fences. I can't quite put my finger on the breed of these cows, can anybody enlighten us on that?

P.S. Holy Cow, I almost forgot. It's someone's birthday here at Pasty Central today...

Happy Birthday Charlie!

By
Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 06:28 am:

Thanks, Mary. People tell me I haven't changed a bit over the years.

thennow

While we're on the subject of animals today, let me introduce the newest addition to our household, a black-lab, golden retriever mix we've named "Shadow":
Shadow
When we picked him up at the animal shelter, they had named him "Phil". But when we brought him home, everywhere I walked around the house or outside he followed every step, closer than my shadow... so the name stuck. It's amazing how much he looks like Buddy (who we lost in January), but what a different personality, very quiet and timid. Our thanks to all the folks at the Copper Country Humane Society for their tireless efforts in caring for such strays in our area. Shadow has quickly become a part of our family.

jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 06:40 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie!

And congrats on the new family member, Shadow! He looks like a great addition to your clan - best wishes for a long and happy life together!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 06:49 am:

Forgot to ask: when do you start teaching Shadow the "Happy Dog" dance?

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:10 am:

Wow! Moose without antlers! The dog is beautful, but he must shed prodigiously. Maybe you can save the hair and spin it into yarn, and knit sweaters to keep you all warm up there in your eight months of winter.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:15 am:

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday Charlie and many, many, many more (for you and because I'm selfish and want you to keep doing Pasty forever). I hope the Birthday Fairy is extra good to you this year. I see she has already found Shadow for you. Congrats!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:30 am:

Always brings a smile on to hear of a dog brought into a forever, loving home/family! Dogs Rule! As for the cattle...I believe the breed is the "Blocky, Fence Bulldozer" type.

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:47 am:

I believe those cattle are of the "kind we used to wake up and find grazing in our garden" variety. Very common, very good at escaping!

By Thomas D. Dessellier (Tomd) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:49 am:

Thought as soon as I seen these pictures this AM that it was the Rice Lake road. Been down that road many a time.
Happy birthday wishes also to Charlie.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:55 am:

Happy B-Day, Charlie...and I agree your "overalls" haven't changed a bit :)

I bet it was an exciting day when you went to the shelter and picked out Shadow (aka: Phil). The fabulous 3 are now back on those lonely cold mornings (God, Shadow and you).

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:56 am:

Have a wonderful day Charlie...

By Serena Sturm (Serena) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 07:58 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie!! You haven't aged a bit :)
Shadow is beautiful!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:17 am:

Happy Birthday, Charlie! and Happy Birthday to another.....my Uncle Charlie Anderson in Ironwood. Must have been a good day for Charlies.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:24 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie!
Mary, I'm guessing, but those cattle look like young Highlanders. Anybody else?

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:25 am:

May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may your birthday cake be made with half & half (half delicious and half no-calories).

From Marlin & Barb.

(and Shadow looks like a wonderful companion. Enjoy!)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:43 am:

Richard...Auch Aye, Highland Coos!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:47 am:

Richard...I was thinking Semmental or Semmental cross-bred cattle. But being they broke out, and on the loose, definately there is Angus in their breeding somewhere! :)

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 08:55 am:

Happy Birthday, Charlie! The best in the year to come and congratulations on the beautiful new addition to your family. :)

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:07 am:

Is it possible that the cattle were enjoying their last few hours of freedom and life before being transported to a slaughter house?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:33 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:39 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie. Have great day.

Shadow is a lucky dog to have you find him.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:48 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:50 am:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLIE AND WISHING YOU MANY MANY MORE.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:29 am:

How now brown cow!!

While there is some resemblance to a Highland Cow, I don't think they are. I was just in Scotland and snapped a few "fuzzy" cow photos; what do ya think......

highcow

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:31 am:

Captain Paul, that first one looks like the world's largest dog. That's pretty impressive!

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:32 am:

Phil? Shadow? I'm willing to bet that he doesn't care what you call him as long as you don't call him late for dinner...

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:33 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:39 am:

Way to go Capt! I think I passed by that same herd in '69...coos live a long time :)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:39 am:

Let's see.....Charlie as a baby on the left, and Santa Claus as a baby on the right.:) Hope you and Shadow have a Happy Day, Charlie!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:43 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:49 am:

I'm betting those cows in the top photos are just normal cows with their winter coats on and not related at all to Highland Cows.

I don't know; that baby pic on the right looks like some sort of dimented Red Green baby photo, w/o the suspenders and duct tape.....

Happy B-Day Charlie!!

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 12:16 pm:

Happy Birthday, Charlie!

When I saw the photo of Shadow, I did a double take; he looks identical to a black lab/golden/irish setter mix that blessed me with friendship and goofiness for over 15 wonderful years. If looks alone can predict the future, you're in for a great time!

By Jane (Yooperski) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 01:16 pm:

Charlie-
Happy Birthday! And your Shadow looks just like my Buddy!! Love those dogs...

By Joanne Sherrick (Shedoesnails) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 02:16 pm:

Charlie,
Happy Birthday & congratulations on your new addition to your family. Shadow looks to be very happy in his new home.He is beautiful!
Another reminder to people to remember your local shelters when seeking out a new pet.My husband and I rescued 9 horses and 23 dogs from a local home just last week. The dogs were all pure bred Golden Retrievers. If anyone would be interested in adopting thses dogs, or donating to the upkeep of the horses please contact me.
Hope its ok to ask for help here charlie & mary. I need all the help I can get with the care of these animals.

By Bruce (Bessemerbj) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 03:01 pm:

Happy Birthday Charlie,
Thanks for taking a shelter dog. Shadow looks very content! We have one just like him at the HOPE animal shelter in Ironwood named Clyde:
www.hopeanimalshelter.org
I've walked him daily for about 10 months now and also have had him at my house overnight with my 3 dogs and 2 cats. He has slept in my kitchen and has always behaved!!!

By kathy dukart (Katles) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 03:22 pm:

the cows are Scottish Highlander. I know because they jumped my fence on Rice Lake Rd.

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 04:46 pm:

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY", CHARLIE. I KNOW THAT SHADOW WILL BE A AWSOME FRIEND. I WAS PICKED BY OUR DOG LULU FROM A AMIMAL SHELTER. BEST MOVE I MADE. ENJOY YOUR NEW FRIEND.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:22 pm:

Happy Birthday, Charlie. I'm glad that you and Edie and Shadow are
together.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 09:43 pm:

Happy B-day Chas! Shadow looks very happy, nice addition to your family, Congrats!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:52 pm:

Happy Birthday, Charlie! How wonderful that you got your pet from an animal shelter. We've had very few animals that we didn't get from the shelter. Our orange cat isn't from the shelter, but he was a stray who came wandering into our yard half starved. I saved him and he never left. A more grateful cat you'll never see. I'm happy for you guys and for Shadow too.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 10:52 pm:

Happy Birthday, Charlie! Shadow looks right comfy in his new home. Thanks, Charlie.

By Yahoo in Flatland (Yahooinflatland) on Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 11:55 pm:

Happy Birthday Charlie,

Did you have a Pasty Cake?

By Sandy G (Artessss) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 12:12 am:

Animal lovers all! Wonderful! I have 7 cats all inside and one dog inside, and 4 dogs outside. Yes, I live on a ranch. VET said the Hawks would enjoy my cats for lunch and dinner inside 2 weeks -- so keep them inside. Three were outside cats originally, but the rest have been inside since birth. Your dog is your best friend, your cat is YOUR owner! How true it is! I do enjoy learning each of my cats -- all are so different and they change habits periodically.

I hope you had a super birthday, Charlie!

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 12:48 am:

Belated Happy Birthday Charlie. Hope you had a great day. May our Lord bless you with many more years.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 05:59 am:

More belated B'Day wishes Charlie Hopper. Does your birthday generally fall on the last full day of winter?

It does when Spring arrives on the 20th :o)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 07:17 am:

Even later, but still ... Happy Birthday, Charlie!

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 09:30 am:

Capt. Paul - Just for reference, those aren't Highland Cows... they're Hielan' Coos. ;)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 09:41 am:

Och aye...that's braw.
