More of a common sight in the lower portion of the Upper Peninsula, wild turkeys can be spotted along the highway or out in a field as you're passing by. At first they don't strike you as a particularly good looking bird, but upon closer scrutiny, as in these photos from Joseph Hurley, the beauty in them begins to appear. Take a look at that colorful head especially, not to mention the iridescence you can see in their feathers. Granted that's not the prettiest face you've ever seen, but they definitely have a touch of pretty if you look deep enough.

Now I'm wondering how they keep warm all winter and where they live?

A little "Wild Turkey" just might help out with my case of bronchitis I have.

There are a lot of wild turkeys in the Genesee County area. We've also seen many in the Hanka Homestead area near Chassell.

It's incredible how Wild Turkeys have rebounded in recernt years all over the state. We get as many as 20 even in our yard down here in St. Clair county just 35 miles from the Detroit Metro area!
(pics in my guest gallery) They don't fare as well in deep snow so why many people and organizations provide supplement corn for them to survive the winter. Seems the Turkeys down this way in the south part of the state are more wary and reclusive whereas those in the NLP will stand in the middle of the road if they feel like it.
I once stepped out of the car to get a pic of a flock blocking the road near our Kalkaska county place and was immediately challenged and charged by a big Tom! Back in the car quickly I went! Very territorial and possesive of "their" hens!
