Here is a tricky question: In the photo coming into Bruce Crossing, which direction is the car traveling?

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:12 am:

Good morning from Wells, Brrrrr -8

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:12 am:

Good Morning!!

The car is traveling east on M-28.
First Post

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:18 am:

How about south on 45.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:18 am:

Good Morning! The car is traveling north on US 41?

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:22 am:

How about West??

Hey RD, aren't you the one who suggested last week that we fine people for wrong answers? Pay up, buddy. How about $5 for Little Brothers?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:22 am:

Southbound on 41?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:25 am:

The car is traveling toward the street light and the stop signs to get some gas.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:25 am:

north on 45?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:26 am:

Actually, it is NE on US 41.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:27 am:

Way ta go Capt!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:27 am:

Just to let everybody know- my sweetie posted that other posting. He is still getting use to the computer.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:31 am:

Umm, Charlie, I don't think that was M-28. It is actually M-26 or US 41, and, according to Google maps, the direction is NE, which was the tricky part of the question! :-)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:40 am:

Umm Marianne, neither of those roads go through Bruce Crossing!!!!! ;-)

The only main highways that go through Bruce Crossing are US-45 and M-28.......

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:43 am:

We have stayed at that motel a couple of times. And, it's directory address is US 41. It is just north of Calumet. :-)

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:43 am:

Settler's Co-op in Bruce Crossing is on the north-east corner of the intersection. The photo shows it on the left, beyond the stop sign. The only place you would see it like this would be traveling EAST.

Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:47 am:

Marianne, Bruce Crossing is south of Calumet, quite a ways.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:48 am:

Ok, either there are two Northgate Motels, that look alike, or that is NE on US 41, because it is just north of Calumet.
Northgate Motel
Category: Hotels/Motels
Address: 57900 US Highway 41, Calumet, MI
Phone: 906-337-1000, 800-373-7703

Bruce Crossing is many miles SOUTH of Houghton. Calumet is many miles NORTH of Houghton.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 07:55 am:

Who would you notify that the liftbridge-cam is stuck on 1-23-09?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 08:00 am:

I'm sorry, you all. I misread the question, so I answered the wrong question. I should have had some tea, first, I guess. For some reason, I thought Charlie was asking about the motel, which in itself would have been a trick question. Sorry guys! :-) I hope you all have a good day!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 08:04 am:

And if you do the trek by snowmobile, Bruce Crossing is many, many, many, miles south from Houghton, and Calumet is many, many, many miles north of Houghton! Takes a good part of a day, but worth every bit of it!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 08:20 am:

Oh my gosh! Coming into Bruce Crossing is the most welcome sight ever, well, with the exception of entering Ironwood. But once we hit Bruce Crossing, we know we're almost there. We always have to stop at the store for food or just something to drink.

Good morning all. There are some great pictures this morning. Snowy trails is awesome, along with Tahquamenon Falls. Ice jam is cool also.

Thanks for all the great shots today. Have a good one.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 08:52 am:

I know you can get a good wood/sauna stove in Bruce Crossing.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 09:25 am:

Who is Bruce?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 09:29 am:

What is Bruce crossing and to get to what, the gas station?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 09:58 am:

Bruce Crossing is a town on our way home to Lake Linden. For some reason, once we get there, we feel it's all downhill from there. It's on M-28, and we turn on 45 to get "home".

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 10:51 am:

I think I figured out who Bruce is. (It's a slow day at work.)

By Bruce (Bessemerbj) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 10:59 am:

One tourist asked what a Bruce was?? He said he saw Moose Crossing signs, Cattle Crossing signs, and several Deer Crossing signs on U.P. roads. When he came across the Bruce Crossing sign he wondered what they were????

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 11:58 am:

I know a Bruce that crossed there a coupla times.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 02:19 pm:

Excellent wood stoves built in Bruce Crossing; I have been heating my house with one for the last 20 years, www.nippa.com/

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 02:44 pm:

More info on 'Ruce's 'Rossing may be found in Hunt's Guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula: Bruce Crossing.

Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk):
"Excellent wood stoves built in Bruce Crossing …

Well fer sure dat yoosta be da case (I met ol' Leo Nippa way back in the early 1950's in 'Ruces 'Rossing), but evidence seems to indicate that the Nippa family either sold off the business, or moved to troll land (Horrors!), as the web site (www.nippa.com) now points to the new business location in Beulah MI!

That is in fact quite an informative web site, and they certainly have carefully and accurately documented the Leo Nippa (formerly Leo Niippa) sauna history (Click on the Info & News link).

I certainly wish I know how the business came to locate in Troll land, and whether there is still a family connection. Does anyone know?

Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 05:14 pm:

FRNash
From that Nippa website:
On December 20, 2005, NIPPAź Sauna Stoves of Beulah, Michigan purchased the Nippa stove line from Bruce Enterprises of Bruce Crossing, Michigan. The complete NIPPAź line will now be manufactured by NIPPAź Sauna Stoves in our Beulah, Michigan location. NIPPAź Sauna Stoves assumes no liability for stoves manufactured by Bruce Enterprises, or any stoves manufactured prior to 12/20/2005.

Ruses Rossing -- dats not too far from Rout Rick, hey?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 05:33 pm:

Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell):

Ooops, I guess I hadn't noticed the part about "… purchased the Nippa stove line from Bruce Enterprises …"

The way that's worded kinda suggests that the company is no longer in the family.

Somehow I don't think that's the whole story …

"NIPPAź Sauna Stoves assumes no liability for stoves manufactured by Bruce Enterprises, or any stoves manufactured prior to 12/20/2005.

I can understand the part about "manufactured prior to 12/20/2005"; presumably that's when the present owners bought the business, but I have to wonder if Bruce Enterprises is still making stoves at all; if not, then why would there be a need for the disclaimer about "assumes no liability for stoves manufactured by Bruce Enterprises"?

Doug (Greenhermit):
"Ruses Rossing -- dats not too far from Rout Rick, hey?"

Yep, exactly!

Judging from these fine Winter Memory Lane pics, President Andrew Jackson picked a Winter Wonderland day 2 make Michigan a state on this date in 1837. Happy Birthday, Michigan.

By Heidi (Germangirl) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 06:19 pm:

Newbie here, only Bruce I know is Bruce Willis. Just kidding Yoopers! Know a lot of people that go to the bowling alley in that town.

FRNash, you need to chill out Dude!

FJL, not too proud of your posts. Shouldn't this forum be for fun????

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 08:34 pm:

Heidi (Germangirl):
"Newbie here"…

Obviously. Newbie with "attitude"?

1. "FRNash, you need to chill out Dude!"
Now what's with that?
2. "FJL, not too proud of your posts."
Ditto, I don't even see any posts by FJL on this page!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, January 26, 2009 - 10:02 pm:

Heidi, Mr. Nash is cool. I enjoy his post, and when I make a mistaek he will catch it and correct it for me. Thanks for being there Frank.

By Heidi (Germangirl) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 07:00 am:

My apologies FRNash. Guess I shouldn't base my opinions on previous pages.

Let me start all over again, without an attitude.

Newbie here, Mikie, you made a "mistaek". :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 07:19 am:

FRNash and Mikie, AMEN!!! I also looked for a post from FJL and couldn't find one. Whatever, eh? Hey Mikie, you spelled mistaek wrong, lolol!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 07:43 am:

Least it wasn't a "misteak", otherwise I'd tell the chef to cook it right next time......

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 10:46 am:

Heidi (Germangirl):
"My apologies … Let me start all over again …""

If you put it that way, all I can say is "Welcome aboard!"

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 10:53 am:

I agree with Mr. Nash, welcome aboard.

By Heidi (Germangirl) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 03:52 pm:

FRNash & Mikie, thank you for the welcome. Again, my most sincere apologies. I underestimated some of the fine qualities you both have.

Guten Tag Gentlemen! :)

By FJL (Langoman) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 04:21 pm:

What, no apology to FJL!!

By Heidi (Germangirl) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 05:14 pm:

FJL, ach der lieber! I've been busy eating crow. You, also have my most sincere apology. I came on this site with an attitude from just reading posts. I neglected to form my own opinion. This is proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks, in fact, you can make this old dog shake hands, roll over and "play ball". :)
