(For today's Early Bird you'll have to hear Pasty Central Day in History.)

In which President's cabinet did Donald M. Dickinson serve as Postmaster General?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 07:24 am:

Good Morning!!

That president was Grover Cleveland.

We set a new record cold temp for Cedar Rapids Ia. -31*. At this point nobody cares anymore about the wind chill. Winds are shifting to the south today, our high for the day is set for +7! No global warming here Al Gore!

Good Morning from cold Mid-Michigan.
School cancelled again today because of the frigid temps.stay warm everyone. Good day to curl up with a good book and a pot of tea.

By Ann Tomlinson (Tomlinan) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 09:04 am:

Good Morning from the frigid Detroit area! It is -16 F today with a wind chill of -37 F. I don't think that one school is open in the area today. Our CC school was hardly ever cancelled until I was a senior and I don't remember ever staying inside at recess time because it was too cold! How times have changed!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 09:09 am:

Our schools have been closed since wednesday...too cold to go to school, but not too cold to hit the malls or driving around! Parents are getting tired of the school board's thinkings.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 10:02 am:

Taylor was excited to see a positive temperature this morning, it meant outdoor recess. I think we were one f the few school districts in the state not closed yesterday and today.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 10:52 am:

It was -10 degrees with a -24 windchill here in Lansing this morning. Most of the schools are closed. Too bad work isn't closed...sigh. It's bright and sunny so that means not much warmer for a while. Only 63 days until spring. Think warm thoughts...or hot ones.... ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 11:22 am:

Work was closed--oh, wait, I work at a school.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 12:30 pm:

You want bone chilling cold; it was 24 the other morning in SE Texas!!! :-P

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 02:48 pm:

Capt. Paul, that deserves a "wet noodle" whipping! I've been trying for two days to head for South Padre Island and can't get out of town. Was -32 plus wind chill here on the Mississippi River. Guess I need a newer battery hey :O)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 02:58 pm:

kay...you need to go to Alaska. It was in the 30s today.

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 03:17 pm:

For a little different further glimpse of shoe box memories and pictures of life in the UP, St. Ignace area (plus the Copper Country !) go to
www.northbirding.com click on Portal, find, click on "Stories of Aunt Jane" followed up by "more Aunt Jane" ! >>>Hilarious!

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 04:02 pm:

Loved the storys Russ. In one of the pictures I saw a ceramic pipe ashtray like my Grandfather had! I had forgotten about that. I looked on ebay for a few and there were plenty of them and I bid on a few (lol) and I don't even smoke!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 04:22 pm:

It has been cold here too around Knoxville, TN. + 10 with Schools closed. If it is to cold to go to school waiting at the Bus Stop, shouldn't it become to hot waiting there also at times? When the temp hits +70 it should be to hot to send Yooper kid's to School eh?

By Bugsy (Bugsyrocker) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 04:46 pm:

Is it too cold? Everyone is talking about the temperature lately. Personally I think it's a bit wimpy for NMU to cancel classes TWO DAYS IN A ROW!!!

For elementary kids I understand, but college? C'mon, toughen up.

I decided to do a little poll to see at what temperature should colleges in the UP cancel classes.

It'd be great to have your vote!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 05:02 pm:

More great pics, folks. Keep it up (Upper Peninsula, that is. LOL).
