Lisa Normand and her family, made a visit to the winter wonderland of Gay, MI to enjoy the peacefulness and quiet of being able to trek all over without worrying about too much traffic. In her first shot, you can see all the places the roads leading out of Gay will take you, but all her family was interested in that day were where those roads were leading around the town. Like passing a quiet looking Gay Bar during a morning walk to the dumpster or snowshoeing right down the middle of the road as they pass by the now famous landmark, the Gay Smokestack. There's a lot to be said for getting off the beaten path and away from it all in the little towns like this one.

Pictures are beautiful. Gay, MI. could be in the dictionary under
the definition of "winter." The pictures look like it would be very
quiet and peaceful there. How do you even get to Gay in that
much snow?

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 07:52 am:

You can't beat the 4th of July parade in Gay.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 07:53 am:

The famous Gay Bar and their t-shirts. And to mention it's well known sign for picture taking! Does Vicky still tend bar there?

By Cathie (Cath) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 08:46 am:

I have always enjoyed stopping at that bar. Is the bar closed down??? I hope not.

By Kim (Kim) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 09:20 am:

The Gay Bar is still. A perfect place to stop for a drink and onion rings.

By Cathie (Cath) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 09:37 am:

Thank you Kim for that update. Have always enjoyed stopping there for lunch when we are up there.

By Thomas D. Dessellier (Tomd) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 10:35 am:

Looks like a place I have visited a few times and brings back some good memories. Can't wait to get up to my cottage in June to do some fishing.

I don't think I have ever seen winter pictures of Gay. Thanks for the perspective. Looks cold and wonderful.

By Ann Tomlinson (Tomlinan) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 12:22 pm:

They have great foot long hot dogs at the Gay Bar! They've been great for lunch on many a berry-picking trip out that way!

By Tom Strohl (Reccepilot) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 12:25 pm:

These are very familiar scenes, albeit without the snow. Our favorite drive in to town from Bete Gris is the Lac la Belle/Betsy/Gay Road along the South Shore with an occasional stop at the Gay Bar. We could use some of that snow out here in California. This morning, the Sierra snow pack was reported at 60% of normal. California is in water trouble, well, it is in more trouble than that. We look forward to returning to the Copper Country each Summer where common sense and sanity prevails.

Only 9 miles to L.B. from the Tavern, wish I was there right now!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 04:32 pm:

Sounds like we could all use a drink.

By Orin M. Pelto (Pluto) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 06:42 pm:

My aunt and uncle used to live in Gay. Jim and Vivi Pelto.

Many a family luncheon was spent in the Gay Bar.

I truly miss them to this day.

Thanks for the pictures and the memories.

By Debi Steinle (Debi) on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 11:35 am:

Bobbysgirl: No, Vickie does not work at the bar anymore. She is now retired. (And tired!) I know her quite well. She is one-of-a-kind!! A super lady!

By gretchen arnold (Garnold) on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 05:23 pm:

Thanks for the pics. of Gay. We have a house there but never get to go there in the winter. Nice to see it all white. We can see our porch in the first pic. Our first trip up is usually in June and we can't wait!

By Bonnie Hartman (Bonniehartman) on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 06:42 pm:

Gay was my hometown. I spent many a LONG winter playing out in the snow. The Volunteer Fire Dept. would make us an ice rink every year. Those were great days!

By Alice Slattery Parker (Aparker) on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 07:54 pm:

Iam looking for my cousin Kay Hagie Moore. She has a sister Pat Hagie Hewitt. I will keep watching for a message from her.

Great pics. I especially like the first one; I love those brown and white wooden signs.
