When I spotted these photos in Brenda Leigh's photo gallery, my initial reaction was amazement. Then after working with the photos, deciding which ones to share with all of you, that feeling hasn't changed. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, is beautiful in the summer time, but this time of year it takes on a completely different kind of beauty. Now I want to make the snowshoe journey in to these icy caves like Brenda and a group of friends did recently. She said when they first got to there and entered the caves; it was like a magical world with a sense of energy running through the space. That tower of ice in the second photo is actually a waterfall, which Brenda said had water still running inside the ice formation, making an almost musical sound. What a splendid adventure, thanks for sharing it with us, Brenda!

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. These pictures are beautiful. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to walk out on the ice. I have a dislike for doing that even at our cottage.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 07:04 am:

Great pictures, but I'm with Charlotte. I am not at all daring and I could just see one of those chunks of ice falling on me. No thank you. I won't even go ice fishing for crying out loud.

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 07:47 am:

WOW....these are PHENOMENAL....Don't know that I'd brave the ice...but these pictures are majestic.

Thank you Brenda for sharing those, and thanks Mary!

Totally cool pics!

I know there are numerous caves in the sandstone cliffs around Munising, but how did they get there?

Awesome pictures!

By Ann Tomlinson (Tomlinan) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 08:03 am:

WOW!!! What gorgeous pictures!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 08:43 am:

I would like to confirm that there is music in those icicles. I've heard it. Has anyone else here heard it? Matter of fact I hauled one of those "tonal tubes" home one year to show my parents because I didn't think they'd believe what I was telling them. The thing must have weighted 40#. They can occur anywhere where ground water comes out of a cliff.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 08:52 am:

Amazing! What a find!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 09:09 am:

Those pictures are great! When am I going to find the time to see all these places?

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 09:44 am:

Those pictures are "beauties". I love caves, but don't know that I'd venture into these icy conditions. I didn't want to exit Mammoth Cave...a totally different world exists in caves. Thanks so much for this awesome "looksee".

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 10:02 am:

Absolutely gorgeous photos. I would love to go exploring in there. Can't wait to be up in the winter - I've only seen this area in the summer so far.

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 10:16 am:

One word sums up those pictures ... WOW!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 11:33 am:

Notice the ad below.... The Story of Six Brothers etc. The little town of Jacobsville had five brothers in WWII. Jerry, Fritz, Art, Jim & Jack. Minnie, their Mom, must have been very uneasy as I'm sure other Moms were. Only time FIVE. Others from Jacobsville participated too. Sorvala, Huuki, Mattala, Bergh are some names that come to mind. Practically all the population of the town that was of age went to fight for our FREEDOM. Lets not forget what they and all the rest of our Veterans did for us.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 11:35 am:

Sorry, I notice the ad is gone now.

By Mickey Hodges (Churchlady) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 11:42 am:

Hey Mary, I'll go with you!

Mary says: You're on Mickey, let's do it! :->

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 03:25 pm:

Amazing what icicles can do 2 become attractive!

By Gail (Gailre) on Monday, January 19, 2009 - 09:40 pm:

WOW! Nice pictures. Not sure I'd venture out on the ice.

Rowdy, my dad came from a family of three brothers that were all in WWII. Their name was Sedlar. Thankfully, they all made it home! They were from Larium, Mi.

There sure are some wonders in God's earth. The pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing them!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - 05:15 am:

When we use to visit my mom in Lake Linden her health prevented her from taking rides with us. She tokd us to take movies and come back to the house and she will watch them. She always said it was like being there. Looking at the pictures is like being there.
