Good Morning from sunny Florida
First Post

By danbury on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 10:10 am:

Hello Foghorn, in case you're following this site - since in the past most political discussions were gently called of sooner or later, I did not expect it to go on like this, and haven't checked Tuesday's What'sUp since, so I just found out there's more I haven't read, especially your return. I did not ask you to mail me because of your identity, which I frankly don't care about (hey, we're on the internet, after all!), but because I did not want to continue the discussion on these sites. Seem's like I had no reason to worry.

List of msgs posted in last 24 hours was pretty interesting! What are those notations along the left side?

By maijaMI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:35 am:

Ok, I see what they are, continuations of the previous msg. Seemed strange, though, especialy when one group of msgs had the notation "dum" Now I see that is not an organization of msgs.

Sunspot alert. Could be some auroras on the way. Hope you have some clear skies.

Hey Danbury,
Not pulling a leg. I posted it in the wrong place so here it is
again.

"Since religion seems to be the topic here, I'd like to note that
there are three websites now for former members of the Old
Apostolic Lutheran Church (which was the subject of some
heated debate here not so long ago)."

Danbury and Dave, keep conversating, as GWB would say. I'm
enjoying it immensely. Fundamentalism of all kinds is the
antithesis of reason and must be resisted. Moderation, everyone!

By danbury on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 03:24 am:

Didn't think so, RecoveredFundie. Better to keep the strand intact than splitting it up. But my answer stands. There's a point in Judy's rant! :)

By CRH on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 06:36 am:

Fundamentalism: n - the interpretation of every word in the sacred texts as literal truth

RecoverdFundie,

This is one of the dictionary definitions of fundamentalism. Until the late 1970's it was the ONLY definition, and most Bible-beleiving Christians were comfortable with the label. Then the secular-humanist-media-powers-that-be hijacked the word to apply it to extremists who use coersion or violence to promote their point of view. (ie, "Shiite Fundamentalists").

My point is this: you contradict your statement "Fundamentalism of all kinds is the antithesis of reason..." The link you posted "oldapostolicluteran.com" takes you to a site which states the webmaster's primary position in "What We Believe":

We believe the Bible, in 66 books, is the inspired and inerrant Word of God

By the original dictionary definition, this is the basic identification of a Christian Fundamentalist. For a person who embraces "the inspired and inerrant Word of God", it is not the antithesis of reason: it is the beginning of reason, embracing a standard by which everything else can be measured. If that's the type of 'fundamentalism' you feel should be resisted, you might want to rethink your links.

By RecoveredFundie on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 11:58 am:

Dear CRH,
Those links don't represent my philosophy, which might be
described as a church-going agnostic. I posted them for
people interested in finding out more about the OALC. One of
the sites does have a fundamentalist bent (it isn't surprising
when people trade one kind of box for another). I would
add to the definition of fundamentalism: reducing everything to
opposites -- denying the
complexity that, alas, is our fate. As a species we
have many more questions than answers. Any system that
resists new knowledge should be suspect. We are wired to
explore, to learn, to doubt.

By Therese from just below the bridge on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 06:09 pm:

The winds picked up today and are blowing out of the northwest, sending great waves crashing into the breakwater in Petoskey. I stopped there near sunset on my way home from work. The clouds were all golden and purple, the waves the 'wine-dark' color that Patrick OBrien talked about in some of his seafaring novels, and the sky beyond ultramarine blue. (Can you tell I am taking a painting class? I see color everywhere.) I watched the white columns of snow squalls sweep across the bay. What a beautiful sight!

By Paul, MI on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 07:41 pm:

Northern lights are dancing over the Keweenaw this evening. Nice display when no cloud cover!

By lit major on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 09:35 pm:

Therese--I think Patrick OBrien has been reading his Homer. "The wine-dark sea" is a repetitive Homeric phrase used to evoke a familiar image.

By ert, GA on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 10:26 pm:

Just got on to say REMEMBER to watch the skies tonight and the next two, and I see by a post that the lights are already 'dancing'. How great! ENJOY!

By Bob G. Houghton Lake, MI on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 11:08 pm:

We were seeing the Northern Lights tonight just east of Midland as we were driving home from downstate. Unfortunately as we got further north clouds moved in and the show came to a close.

this site seems quiet.
Whatsup? Thought we would be hearing about the deer hunters successes.

By RD, Iowa on Thursday, November 18, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

When the hunters are out hunting they don't have time for surfing or writing.

Snowshoeing Workshop
Sponsored by the Paradise Area Tourism Council
January 8th and 9th, 2005
At Sawmill Creek Park in Paradise, MI
Hours 10 a.m. to dusk.

Admission: This fun workshop is being offered to the public free of charge as a service of the Paradise Area Tourism Council, which wishes all visitors to Paradise a safe, comfortable, and happy stay.

There's been a lot of hubbub about snowshoeing in the past few years, and in February 2004, the President's Council on Physical Fitness endorsed snowshoeing as an ideal no-impact cardiovascular workout. The Paradise Area Tourism Council, in cooperation with professional wilderness guides from Timberwolf Wilderness Adventures, would like to offer visitors to the Paradise area an opportunity to see for themselves why snowshoeing has become the fastest growing winter sport in America. No snow is too deep, no forest too rugged to be explored by snowshoe - even swampy marshes too wet to be traversed in summer become easy jaunts when leveled by hardpack snow.

Snowshoes have come a long way, baby, thanks to the technology of stronger aluminum frames, quick-release bindings, and crampons that provide superb traction on steep grades or ice. PATC's 2005 Snowshoe Workshop will give participants hands-on experience with some of the most up-to-date and proven snowshoe designs. We'll have on hand an assortment of makes and models designed for women, for kids, and on up to the heaviest backpacker.

When you're in Paradise, Michigan, you're in the heart of one of the largest, wildest forests in the lower 48 states, a region that's perfect for snowshoers of all ages and skill levels to explore.

So stop by PATC's 2004 Snowshoeing Workshop, and bring the family. We'll be guiding groups through the Sawmill Creek Park hiking loop (about a quarter-mile) for as long as our guides hold out. Hot refreshments will be available to help keep back the chill, as will the warm smiles of local residents.

Snowshoes and guides for this workshop provided courtesy of Timberwolf Wilderness Adventures guide service of Paradise, Michigan (906) 492-4905. Refreshments provided by Best Western Motel, Curley's Paradise Motel,Whitefish Bay Cabins & Motel, The Vagabond Motel, Heidi's Travelers Motel, Paradise Inn. Don't you deserve to find Paradise?
