Brenda Leigh was quite excited when they finally received some snow in the Manistique area, so she could get outside and snap some pictures of the birds around her home. She spotted this lone chickadee, who seems to be waiting patiently in the tree. It looks like he's waiting for a turn at Brenda's colorfully, decorated feeders. Look at the size of those Christmas lights compared to the Goldfinches lined up at the feeder. Either Brenda found some giant bulbs or those are miniature birds... I'm putting my money on the big bulbs. Then in the last photo, the little Chickadee finally makes its way to the feeder and has struck a pose that says, it's mine now, ALL mine! Winter birds are such fun to watch.

Thanks for the great pics of my favorite bird - the Chickadee!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 06:20 am:

I love the pictures. My mom had a birdfeeder outside of her bedroom window and loved watching the birds.

I love those pictures! How fun to decorate around your bird feeders! Thanks for making me smile!

Love the bird pictures. Got a dusting of snow down here over weekend but nothing to talk about.

thanks for a gift idea

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 10:40 am:

Wow, Brenda...those bulbs look like runway lights. Does Neil ever land in your backyard?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 11:11 am:

Those big bulbs must be popular this year; I saw some at a house across the street this weekend. They are very cool.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 11:46 am:

Alex, Neil could land in my backyard anytime!!(24/7)..providing of course that he also bring his camera.

The bulbs are HUGE. How about a little poem about them and Neil??

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 01:12 pm:

I bet when those lights are on they provide a little bit of heat for the birds. LOL

Brenda...I can't think of any light bulb / aviation poems, but I do remember a poem from a TV commercial years ago. I think it was for the Air Force and it was called High Flight. I always remembered the last line of the poem.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung.
High in the sunlit silence, hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting winds along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Junior

Winter Greetings from Bootjack.
The woods are trees are fluffy with snow and its a beautiful sight. I just filled the bird feeder and hopefully the critters won't eat it before the birds get here. Looking out of the windows is just like seeing the perfect Christmas card picture.
Lake is frozen now and we can see lots of deer tracks in the woods near the house. This is paradise on earth and Christmas will be very magical for us this year.
Does anybody know what the hours are at Lindell's restaurant?? See they just reopened. Would love to go there for some good food.
Please keep our men and women who are serving this great country in your prayers during this holiday season. We need peace on earth.!!! PS--- Hi Lulu in Denver.

John Magee, who wrote the poem "High Flight" was a pilot in the Royal Air Force and was killed during the Battle of Britain.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 07:08 pm:

John Magee was an American who wanted to fight in WWII before
the Americans joined the war effort. Hence, he fought for the
Brits. His poem was a favorite of my son's. I'm very fond of it
myself. We saw the original poem at Trenton Air Base here in
Canada many years ago when my son was ten or eleven years old.
Speaking of my son, he's home, having finished his stint in the US
Army. We're happy he's home for Christmas.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 07:14 pm:

Kosk, glad to hear that your son is home. Thank him for me. I know you are proud of your hero, as both Precious and I are.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 07:52 pm:

Kosk:

Great to hear your son is home for Christmas. Like Mikie said, give him a 'Thank You' from me, too.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 08:27 pm:

Kosk, I am so happy for you & your family that your son is home; what a wonderful Christmas gift for all! And, you should be able to watch the Super Bowl with him in a couple of months! Please thank him for his service!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 10:12 pm:

Thanks, Pasty Friends. I will give him your regards. He and his dad
are enjoying watching a football game together.

I have always liked that poem but never knew its history.
Flying is the ultimate escape. Nothing is more important than what you are doing at the time. I flew 4 hours today at work.

By Eric L Johnson (Flapsb52) on Monday, December 8, 2008 - 11:44 pm:

Interesting note about the poem High Flight, the late John Denver put the words to music. It is a very nice song. It is a shame he went at such a relatively young age. At least he left while doing something he loved, flying. Really enjoy this site, first time poster.

I really felt bad about John Denver too. I talked to a guy who flew a homebuilt aircraft that was the same model as the one Denver was test flying. He was thinking of buying it.
He said it had a fuel valve that was behind the pilot and was hard to reach especially for someone unfamiliar with plane.
It was a single seater so he was alone. One tank ran dry and he didn't get the fuel selector swithced in time.
The old pilot saying is there are three things that do not help you at all while flying a plane.
The runway behind you. The altitude above you and the gas on the ground.

Love the Chickadee photos! Chickadees are my favorite birds - they are so tiny and they are so tough! They stay here all winter and they can actually lower their body temperature to conserve energy. Thanks!
