This time of year the mornings often start with a foggy cover, but once the sun comes up it begins to "burn off" or dissipate like you can see happening in today's photo. That's Torch Lake looking so calm beneath the fog, with Hubbell in the background. I'm not sure what first caught my eye when we were driving by this scene, if it was the fog, the smooth water or the boat just floating there in the stillness, but whatever it was, we were compelled to stop and capture the picture. When I zoomed in with my camera lens, I could see the occupants of the boat more clearly and it looks to be a Father and Son on a fishing excursion. Just think of the memories they made that morning, even if they didn't catch a thing all day!

Great shot! Great reminder of that first early morning dad took me fishing on Chassel bay, and I got tired of holding the little Zebco rod he bought me for the occasion. No sooner had I let it go when the baseball-sized bobber, suspending the sucker we were using for bait, and the rod which I had been holding a second before BOTH disappeared from sight. The rod literally jumped out of the boat! We sat together dumbfounded for a moment, wondering what could have happened. Then the bobber resurfaced several yards from its original position, and began to cross the bay. Dad chased that bobber for almost an hour (rowing the rented boat we were in), while I leaned out over the bow as far as I could (like some live figurehead), enlisting the help of several nearby fishermen to help catch my equipment, as it coasted past their boat. Finally, the bobber came up in the middle of a large patch of weeds, and remained still as I grabbed it with both hands to find the steel leader half missing, and the rest of the line, rod and reel still intact (albeit completely encased in mud). The general concesus was that a rather large pike had taken the bait "at speed", and I was probably fortunate for not having the rod in my hand at the time of the strike. A half century later, I'm still looking for that fish; hunting for Northern pike is my favorite pastime! I hope everyone has a wonderful day, and peaceful memories!

Great pictures, Mary! Thank you! They remind me of many years ago, when I would fish with my dad in calm, peaceful waters of lakes. I love both calm, peaceful water and being out in a boat, somewhat close to shore! There is not much that is more soothing, for sure! :-)

Peaceful scene!

David, that's a great story. When I was taken fishing as a kid, there was no drama and very few fish.

Very nice, Mary! Makes me want to get out on the lake this weekend. Not that we haven't wanted to for a while, but it's either too windy or we have something planned.

This is a great picture today of father and son companionship. I have many, many fishing memories extending some 60 years with the most recent ones here in Troll Land..As a youngster growing up in Hubbell we were not allowed to swim in Torch Lake as it was toooo contaminated..Had to do all our swimming up in the quarries or out at Dreamland..Caught some pike out in Rice Lake as my sons fell to sleep in the boat after rousing them too early for our big fishing trip...My last fishing story is one year ago while fishing from the bank on the Huron River I hooked a small bluegill then re-adjusted my stance and fell off the tree stump, rolled down the bank and cracked my wrist..While being examined they discovered I also had a shoulder injury so I have been operated on twice since "landing" the 4" trophy fish. Going to be 80° here today so get out there and enjoy Michigan waters.

Eddyfitz...sounds like that bluegill put up one heck of a fight. I second your comment on the weather, these are bonus days in Michigan. I myself will be on the motorcycle this evening for sure.

Eddyfitz fishes like I do, only about 4" is all I ever get. Never anything worth keeping. It is a peaceful thing to do.

Well, I sold the house in Craig, on MOnday; so I'll be returning to the Copper Country, November first. Maybe I can get at least one shot at "the one that got away" before too much snow flies. Look for another big yellow Wing on the roads next spring... {:)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 - 01:11 pm:

David...I know exactly what you mean. Cruising to Copper Harbor on the Wing and listening to your favorite music. It doesn't get much better than that.

Alex and David....you two should hook up and plan a U.P. wing-ding ride!

David and Alex....I wish you two would be quiet. I'm eating my heart out, jealous of your opportunities. Sigh..........ms katie

Ms Katie, motorcycle brands make fancy looking 3 wheeled,"trikes" that I would bet you would look pretty spiffy on.

It's absolutely true: A bad day fishing beats a good day working any time! I've been lucky to spend a lot of time at a friend's house this summer fishing my heart out! The pike are really biting right now! Too bad that monster bass wouldn't...
Counting the days (8) until I head to the northwestern U.P....

We saw a motorcycle today that had two (smaller than usual)front tires and one tire in the back?????? We did not have the time to stop and talk to the guy.
