Normally when we feature a photo of Marquette Harbor you'd see a freighter or two, but today's shots are about rainbows instead. For Tom Cook, it wasn't enough to catch a streak of rainbow that seems to come out of the rain clouds and plunge right into the water. No, Tom had to keep after it, until he finally captured a double rainbow, arching out over Lake Superior. I never really noticed before, but when there is a pair like that, the colors invert, like the second one is a reflection of the first. Pretty neat!

According to Wikipedia, the primary rainbow is caused by light reflecting once inside the raindrop. Sometimes the light reflects a second time before exiting the raindrop, which creates the second rainbow. This second reflection causes the colors to be reversed in the secondary, as Mary indicated.

I learned something today about rainbows also..There are no freighters in this picture as this is the old ore dock down at Mattson Park and not the active one out on Presque Isle.

I took a trip with my grandpa and uncle when I was a lot younger. We started from Calumet and went right across the U.P. to the Soo Locks. I spotted a rainbow in Baraga or before and followed the rainbow all the way to the Soo Locks. That is where I spotted the end of the rainbow. 'My' pot of gold was a fantastic trip with my grandpa and uncle. :-)
