Most people who've spent time near or on Lake Superior's waters, know what a gem this Great Lake truly is. But today, Steve Kyllonen shares the richness of the Big Lake with us, in the form of sparkling waters, both calm and rolling too. With the setting sun getting closer to the horizon, its rays form diamonds as the light connects with the water's surface. She's definitely a priceless gem.

There are other parts of the country that are beautiful, however, the small percentage of the country that borders Lake Superior is hard to beat because, unlike a mountain hill, Gitchee Gumee has many different moods.

You said it Tim! There is nothing like Lake Superior. I could sit and watch it for hours. These pictures are gorgeous and will definitely be my background some day.

Simply beautiful!

Yowsah!

Just seeing the lake cools me off in this 90 degree heat in Atlanta. Thanks!!!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 01:27 pm:

Hi
Tim & DebS, I have to say I find the same effect for Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 02:02 pm:

This is the same message as I posted in the What'sUP side, but I thought I'd share it here as well. We are hunkering down here for Ike. We have already cleaned up the yard, got our essential supplies, and securing everything down.

To give everyone an idea, we are located between Cypress and Hockley, Texas or about 40 miles northwest of Houston proper. It looks like the eye will come ashore just west of galveston near San Luis Pass (BAD for Galveston) then follow I-45 up through downtown Houston and then north up to about Huntsville before turning northeast. That puts the eye about 25-30 miles east of us and puts us in the western eyewall. What they are saying is 75-100 mph winds right here, not counting the gusts. What I can't believe is people are staying on Galveston Island through this. They are forcasting a 20-25 ft storm surge with 25-32 ft waves; that will completely erase most structures off Galveston Island.

At the moment, the skies are beginning to darken and the winds are picking up a little, but nothing compared to what is forecast here tonight. I'm sure we're going to lose power so we won't be on posting for a while, but rest assured we are well prepared for anything Ike will throw at us......

Capt Paul,
I wish you had the serene waves pictured above to deal with instead of Ike. Keep you head down and your floaties on, and we will keep you in mind as we watch the coverage. If you see one of those TV weathermen float by, just let 'em go. They are all full of hot air and won't sink anyway!

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 02:59 pm:

Capt Paul, I'll be thinking & praying for all of you in Ike's path. And we here in the UP talk about our storms!!! It's nothing to what some of you have to endure in other parts of this country & in fact the world!!! Hope to hear from you soon. God be with you.

By Michael Austin (Mjayeh) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 04:53 pm:

Sending good waves (no pun indented) your way Capt Paul, I wish you and all the people in and around the Galveston area safe passage of the storm. Thank you Steve K. for sharing the Superior pictures.

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 05:07 pm:

Beautiful pictures - I can't decide which one to set as my background! Keep dry and safe Capt Paul and Dr. I'm sure you'll be in all of our thoughts.

Hello,
I want to say "Thank You" very much to Mary for taking the time out of her busy schedule to talk to me and help me.

By Catherine Ristola--Holland MI (Catherine) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 10:49 pm:

Cap'n Paul, when are you and the Dr. going to finally move to nice, safe Michigan?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 11:36 pm:

When someone gives us a nice, safe job!! ;-)

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, September 13, 2008 - 12:53 am:

Kathyl: I agree and even that goes to a degree for Lake St. Clair that we are very close to, happy to be on the shore of any of them ---
However there still is some mystique and awe about Superior!

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, September 13, 2008 - 06:51 am:
