Deb and Ron Simons recently did a bit of sight-seeing across the U.P. and one of their stops was at Whitefish Point, which forms the entrance to Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior. It's also home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and the Whitefish Point Light, which the Simons' snapped several photos of. The first shot shows the main campus buildings, where the lightkeeper and his family lived. The second photo is behind the quarters, showing a portion of the "connecting bridge" that took the lightkeeper over to the light without having to go outside in the elements. That must have been quite a convenience UP North here, for those cold, snowy, winter months. The third photo looks like it's possibly an observation tower, perhaps someone can give us some guidance as to its history and use there on Superior's shore. Then of course Deb couldn't resist snapping a shot of a passing freighter. The large lettering on the side of this one says: Canada Steamship Lines, so it's one of their fleet of 15 ships that transport cargo on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. I'm just not sure which one.

Good morning....15 ships?

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 06:51 am:

Thanks for having Whitefish Point pics today - it's one of my favorite places to go!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 07:16 am:

WOW Mary! Our pictures turned out pretty good. I'm so glad I didn't lose all of them like I thought I did with my camera going bonkers. That is such a great place to go. The water is so many shades. Thanks for using them.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 07:18 am:

Almost forgot, could the 3rd picture be an observation tower for fires? There are so many trees around there, that that would make sense to me. That's what I thought it was. I forgot to look for a sign because I was in mourning at the possibility of losing all my pictures from the trip.

Been there a few times...never disappointing...a must see!

Great pictures today. Whitefish Point is one of my favorite places, too. Nice job, Deb and Ron.

You can never go home...........but these pics remind me of a time when I was home. Thanks for the quick shot to my senses. Very peaceful.

"You can never go home...", I know what you mean Theresa....every time David Hiltunen writes something about Tenn., I feel a touch of nostalgia welling up inside. Haven't been back to the old homestate for over 4 years. Beautiful photos today, Deb! Love pics of freighters and lighthouses.

She's either the Frontenac or the Halifax. The Frontenac was in Duluth a couple weeks ago.

Not sure when Deb got these GREAT shots, but if that time frame fits, it could be the Frontenac.

Either way, great pics. I keep asking why oh why did I move to Missouri and not Lake Superior.

Thank you for the distant enjoyment.

Thanks for the shots! Made my day! Got to go to Whitefish Point for first time ever at the end of June. When I got there the lake was hidden in fog - My heart dropped as I had never seen Superior. I started to walk down to the edge and amazingly the fog cleared so I could get some shots! - Then as if on cue, the fog came back within minutes. As a boatnerd it was a must see on my first trip to the UP!!! I was thrilled to be there! (no boats that time tho!)

You guys chose a great day to be there, its best when its sunny. Great shots too.

I believe this platform is for birdwatchers...

This site has a boardwalk and series of steps crossing and climbing the dunes up to a hawk-viewing platform. There is also a large, upper beach-level observation deck adjacent to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and lighthouse, which offers access to the beach. This deck is handicap accessible and another good spot for watching birds. No camping is available on site, but two state forest campgrounds, Shelldrake and Andrus, are located six miles south. In addition, Tahquamenon Falls State Park’s East Entrance Campground is located 14 miles south.

Deb, great shots as usual! My first thought about that observation tower was also about birding. It's suppose to be a great place for that esp. during migration seasons. It's also one of my favorite places what with the boardwalk, the museum and the lighthouse all at one place! Then there's all the parks and waterfalls for camping etc. And an added bonus is Steve Hamilton's great mystery books about there. You can just picture the settings for his books. Thanks Mary and Deb for chosing these pictures for today.

I was just there in the middle of July! Beautiful view, but could not enjoy it long enough due to the monster black flies! There were so many of them, and they were biting. Not alot of fun.

By Warren Gilbert (Warren) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 10:57 am:

I love Whitefish Point. The third picture is a Coast Guard tower. I googled Whitefish Point and found the following: "In 1923, the United States Coast Guard erected a life saving station on the light station reservation. To serve this new crew, a number of new buildings were erected, including an observation tower from which a 24-hour watch of the waters off the point could be conducted."

Deb, nice picture's! great place to visit!

Hi to Mr Deb, how's the shoulder comin along?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 12:38 am:

Hi Uncle Chuck,
The shoulder, unfortunately, is leading towards early retirement. How about yours?
Mr. Deb

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 12:45 am:

Thanks for the sweet pics! Love the freighter. I have yet to see a boat yet this summer...grrr!! I wish I could get up to Copper Harbor ugh...don't think it's going to happen this year, oh well.

Oh hey Deb..what kinda shoulder surgery did Mr. Deb have? I've had both of mine done. I wish him the best, its not easy the first week or two.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 07:14 am:

Thanks you guys for all the nice comments you made about the pictures. It was a great place to go and I couldn't believe how the weather cooperated. The colors of the water were spectacular, and to be there when there was a freighter going by made it too good to be true. And there were no flies!!

Danielle, Mr. Deb had rotator cuff surgery. He's had 2 in the last 2 years now and nothing's helped yet.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 08:35 am:

Mr Deb, Sounds like you still might be having trouble with the shoulder, I wish you the best, keep your head up. Mine still aches once in a while, but for the most part it's doing fine. I need to have the other one done, but holding off as long as I can.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 09:29 am:

Still on restrictions of no more than 1 pound overhead. I was the poster child for recovery for the first two months after the second surgery, then it was like I hit the wall and went backwards. Good thing all those skunked years of deer hunting taught me patience.

Mr. Deb

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 10:21 am:

Mr. Deb sounds like you are in a bit of pain there. I had the subacromial decompression done on both but in my right shoulder my rotator cuff was torn some. They fixed it fine by scope thankfully. Btw..that was last year in May. Now and then my left shoulder bothers me along the rotator cuff, think I may have to give in and go back see what's going on there...I shouldn't be having problems 2 yrs after surgery. I wish you the best of luck..it's a tough road to recovery. Hopefully things will improve for ya.

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 10:22 am:

oh yeah forgot to add....i am having surgery in the morning...having tonsils and adenoids taken out! hopefully then my ears will stop hurtin!!! ugh i hate this pain!! anyways i gotta hit the road...later people!

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 01:16 pm:
