Said to be one of the early spring bloomers, these wildflowers have distinct veins running through their petals, some bold, some pale. Rebecca Frederick was able to capture both for us here today, of these aptly named Spring Beauty blossoms. I don't think I've ever seen these pretty little flowers in my travels, but they grow in woodland areas and must certainly brighten the forest floors. If the weather holds out this weekend, that would be a good way to unwind, head out to the woods in search of some of the springtime wildflowers. Do it now, before the onslaught of bugs begins!

A very pretty little flower it is indeed. Are those ones out yet that you hold under your chin to see if you like butter?

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 06:37 am:

GREAT pics!

And the flower you are asking about David, is the Buttercup...little yellow wild flowers that you hold under your chin...

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 08:59 am:

The dandylion is the one you hold under your chin, to see if you like butter. The wife is in the process of making some dandylion wine, she started it last week. It should be ready by the time we come up for the 4th of July. the flowers are a welcome sight in the Spring.

By Laure (O2bindaup) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 09:18 am:

I agree with Donna. The buttercup, when held up under your chin, used to reflect the prettiest shade of yellow. And who doesn't like butter!
:-)

Duh! Everyone knows it's the buttercup that shows if you like butter. I suppose the Dandelion under your chin shows that you might like Dandies or lions????

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 10:10 am:

Sorry, ladies, I have to agree with the other men about the chin thing. I've had many-a dandelion shoved at my chin back in playground days, usually a girl wanting to see if I liked butter. Looks like this debate is split along gender lines.

Give up Guys ! The Ladies are right, It's the buttercup !!

By Heikki (Heikki) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 11:21 am:

This lady thinks it's dandelions: ;-)

Dandelions
Poem copyright © 2005 by Janice Green

A dandelion beneath the chin
Will tell if you like butter.
Several flowers can make a chain;
Blow the seeds and watch them flutter.

Not a frequent poster but have to chime in on this...

I recall it was the dandelion put under my chin; usually by my sisters. However, it was to see if I liked GIRLS, not butter. This was usually followed by finger pointing and a roar of laughter. I denied it always but, alas gave up that denial over 30 years ago.

it was always dandelion in my neck of the woods, however it is nice to see childhood traditions carry on.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 05:18 pm:

My dear sweet mother had a vase full of daisys on her table and I was sitting there pulling the pedals off one by one, saying she loves me, she loves me not. Mom took the broom and gave me a swat, saying " she may or may not love you, but if you ruin one more of my flowers you wont need to worry about it." Aww wasn't love great when a simple flower could tell you if the one you loved loved you.

Weed or flower? A weed is just a flower in the wrong place.

Pretty pictures!

When I was kid, it was always the buttercup under the chin. And the pointing fingers and laughing. Always tried to keep a straight face, but couldn't. :o) Never saw it done with a dandelion. Any day I can learn something is a good one. Sure like the pix of the Spring Beauties! Haven't seen 'em here in Cornell yet.

Buttercups...Dandelions ...
What the title makes me think of is the old joke:
If April flowers bring May flowers,
What do Mayflowers bring?

Pilgrims!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, May 4, 2008 - 12:18 am:

It's not butter, it's parkay. Who knows what oelo is? Pronounced Oh-lee-oh. Everything is better with what on it? I knew it was the Buttercup under the chin,I never heard it any other way.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, May 4, 2008 - 08:05 am:

"Everything Is Better With Blue Bonnet On It" An old Blue Bonnet margarine advertisement jingle.

By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Sunday, May 4, 2008 - 11:11 am:

David,
I'm no only familiar with the term oleo but I even remember when when they couldn't sell it colored yellow. It came with a little square of paper with a disk of yellow powder that was kneaded into the oleo to color it. In later years the paper turned into a capsule of food coloring.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, May 5, 2008 - 10:42 am:

My dear old old friend Russ E. told me about that at one time too Bob.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, May 5, 2008 - 02:28 pm:

Those don't look like the buttercups that I grew up with in the south--maybe they are a different variety?

They are really pretty, though! Thank you, Rebecca & Mary!

Mary says: You're welcome Marianne! Actually the flowers pictured above are called Spring Beauty, but the conversation somehow got around to discussing buttercups and dandelions too then. :->
