These early spring days are a time of radical change in the weather. Depending on the year, it may look like summer or winter.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 08:01 am:

Good Sunday morning to all! Beautiful WARM day here!
First Post

Good Morning!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 08:21 am:

Good Morning, Everyone from mid-Michigan, where Spring is arriving! Our crocuses are finally in bloom, and our tulips are peaking their leaves through the ground. The birds are singing this morning. And, we have nice weekend weather, with high temperatures just over 60! Three cheers for spring!

By timd (Timd) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 08:31 am:

Good Morning!

The Decade in History won't play for me either. I must not be holding my mouth right...go figure...

sAVING THE QUINCY SMELTER IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING & WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY IN THIS TIME OF
BANKRUPTCY OUR COUNTRY. THE NEED OF PRIORITIES SHOULD BE ADDRESSED.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 09:34 am:

Good Morning everyone! 36 degrees and sunny here in Houghton.

I agree with Dan Belo on saving the Quincy Smelter. More important issues to address with taxpayers hard earned money. Gas prices, food costs, utilities, etc.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 10:24 am:

Good morning everybody! Yesterday was a beautiful day. Many people without jackets, people out playing frisbee, etc. I had a light jacket on. It's never that warm until it's int he 70's for me.

Love it when I can recognize a lighthouse before the caption comes up, as in the one in Escanaba in this slide show. I do love lighthouses.

Have a great day everybody.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 10:58 am:

That's right, history is a waste of time. Let's do away with everything that old;starting with seniors!

History is who were were and where we came from;why save the Liberty bell?

By John W (Jwahtola) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 11:27 am:

Not all restoration projects are paid for with tax moneys. 99% of restoration projects are paid for with private funds.
As a person born on the other end of the state(Hillsdale County)the old historical sites are what I enjoy the most. When we travel the Keweenaw those are what I look for along with the beautiful cliffs, shining waters of Lake Superior, and the many rivers and waterfalls.

Lighthouses are just another example: If it weren't for the preservation groups and organizations most of our great lakes lighthouses would be gone forever.

I love the 2003 shot, very interesting vehicle and the house, wow........if walls could talk. Very nice. Thank you.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 03:22 pm:

I was just at upbirders.org and it said on March 24 there were 22 bald eagles and 2 golden eagles sighted coming from Bumbletown Hill. Does that mean 24 different eagles? That just seems too amazing to be true. Or can some of the eagles be repeat sightings? Am I reading it correctly?

Rowdy and Deb--Please look back to yesterday's "What's Up."

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 05:19 pm:

Marsha: Most likely those would be spring migrants. Easily can be that many passing through at this time. Brockway Mtn. is another exceptionally good vantage place to see migrants of all types, especially raptors in the spring and fall. There are spots on Brockway that one can look DOWN at the birds below soaring through. Of course the premier bird migration spot in the UP is Whitefish Point which is a somewhat short hop over to/from the Canadian mainland for the migrating birds. I shall go check upbirding, I usually do often.

Mr Bill, If I read your comments correct, --back handed sarcasm?, tongue in cheek? --which then I agree fully and appropiate!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 07:06 pm:

I'm sure that if more people thought like Dan and Grace did in the past, there wouldn't be a Quincy Mine, Calumet Theater, Laurium Manor, or any other historical landmark in the Copper Country left for future generations to enjoy either.....

By Joanne Sherrick (Shedoesnails) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 07:32 pm:

ok my turn.
As a person who is a history buff I have to have my say here.
preserving history is a must. we owe it to the future generations to preserve what we can now so
they to can enjoy it tomorrow.
my husband and I took our children to calumet 2 summers ago what did we spend our money on? museums, the laurium manor, the firefighters museum, and books on the HISTORY of the area.
whenever we take a trip we are looking for historical markers not shopping malls.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 10:50 pm:

I really don't know what to think anymore about the History of the place I was born and raised. At times I wish time in the CC could stand still and it stays the way I remember it forever. There is much preservation of History with the Light Houses, Museums, and more as mentioned for Tourist's to see and read about. I feel like Pat and Dave S. with the way they do. I don't live up there anymore. I,like many had to move away, there was nothing up there to make me want to stay other then the beauty of it all. You don't realize it until you been away for so long, and the older you get. The house I grew up in is not in the family any longer, nor dose it look the same, my Grandparents house was torn down, many homes up there have been remodeled with aluminum siding, no more ugly brown wood un painted eye sores. I stay at the Super 8 when we come up, why pay more for the lake side to look at all the old stuff. I do incase a freighter goes by. I wonder what people do for a living up there. I know there are places to work, Teachers, Doctors & Nurses, Mechanics Police & Wallmarts. With no industry, other then Tech where is there a place that employs more then 100 people? I maybe out of touch being gone for so long? What is there for a young person to make a living on there own, or with a family? My brother is working at the Mill up there, now going to school so he can get out with his family. I think it is sentimental for us who left that do not want to see it change. The people up there should have the final say on what goes and what stays. Tourists are the industry UP there, and what do Tourists want? There needs to be things for them to leave there dollars behind, nice things to come and see, and enjoy so they will want to come back. I am talking those who see it for the first time. Tennessee in the GSM are filled with beautiful resorts for time shares ect. without harming the environment, and a lot of History is preserved with Cades Cove, and much other. Maybe the Government needs to come in like in the Cove 1932, buy everyone out and turn the whole Peninsula into a National Park for the whole World to come and see. It was not many years ago that the last family of the Cove who held out finaly sold out living with no electricy

Last Monday I wrote about my sister who passed on, and made a wish that my brother-in-law and two niece's who I lost contact with would get in touch with me. Well today was the day they did. I added a post on last Monday. I lost one of my nieces in death yesterday.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Monday, April 7, 2008 - 08:19 am:

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 - 07:54 am:
