In case you haven't heard, Ed Yarbrough - a familiar face at Quincy Mine for many years - is moving on to another exciting project as architectural historian for a firm based in Los Angeles. While he will maintain an office in the Keweenaw, Ed will certainly be missed by the crowds at Quincy in the summer, and as a historical guide for many here in the Copper Country.

I first met Ed when his father Ray Yarbrough bought the former Still Waters home in Laurium, Daniell Manor, a building of historical significance itself. Ed was very instrumental in the beginnings of Pasty.NET's wireless broadband network in the Keweenaw Peninsula, helping us secure a vantage point high atop the Quincy shafthouse. Ed gave us all a scare a few years back when he had some serious injuries in an accident, from which he has recovered to his former athletic agility. Thanks to Billie Yarbrough and Daryl Laitila for helping put together this mini-"this-is-your-life" as a going-away tribute for Ed.

If you are new to Pasty Central, be assured we do more here than just embarrass our friends. Besides bringing a picture-a-day from the U.P. for more than a decade (w/daily discussions), in recent months we have added "Pasty Cameos", with This Day in History as well as weekly Shoebox Memory vignettes on Northern Michigan, like the one last Sunday about Quincy Smelter or the week before Down on the Farm. If you have an Upper Michigan itch, we'll help scratch it with a "daily glimpse of life from the U.P."

Stay in touch, Ed, and best wishes in your new endeavor. Email your new address on the left coast and we'll send you some pasties :o)

Ed and family

It's hard to imagine the Quincy without Ed around - actually, it will be hard to imagine the Copper Country and local heritage management without Ed's insights and leadership.

I sure hope California knows what they're getting.

(and let's hope he doesn't grow that moustache again!)

I would count Ed Yarbrough among the ranks of great Copper Country historians, like Jack Foster and Clarence Monnette. Surely the news of his going west is just a delayed April Fool's prank?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 08:01 am:

No, RD, one April Fool's prank this year was enough.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 09:42 am:

You have made a deep impact on the Keweenaw, Ed. Sorry to see you go, but best of wishes to you and your family.

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 09:56 am:

Edward and family and Billie too,

I'm having trouble processing this cosmic mistake.

If it is to be, however, please come back occasionally if nothing more than to continue our many arguments on politics and religion, two subjects that are usually avoided by friends. Ah, but you are different; articulate, informed, usually wrong, but agreeably so.

I hope you are still there in May so that I may personally wish you the good fortune, health, and happiness you deserve

The Mining Gazette has a feature article today on Ed too. Here is the link link to the article .

By Michael Roland (Mroland) on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 10:36 am:

Ed will be missed. Aside from his knowledge and expertise, his friendship is what the keweenaw will miss the most. I am truly a better person having Ed and Yvonne in my life. Thanks for all you do you guys!

Edward, Can I have custody of Billie Blanche? I promise to take good care of her!

Thanks for all you did for the Keweenaw.

Loved the swim trunks shot.

After they made Ed, they broke the mould. Not only did they break the mould, they killed the mould-maker! When I think back of all that has been accomplished in the past 10 years, it is quite a legacy that he leaves behind. Of course it also helped that Ellen and Glenda were there to keep him on track.

By Billie Yarbrough (Yarbrough) on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 10:56 pm:

Thank you, Charlie, for the lovely tribute to Edward and thank you, Daryl, for preparing the pictures for the web. The family and I really appreciate the kind words you and pasty members have written.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 12:49 am:

Figures this would be "Roast Ed Day" on here and I've been out of town all day on a field trip.

I had the pleasure to work with Ed at the Quincy for 4 years. Although we sometimes didn't see eye-to-eye on things at Quincy, we always came to the mutual understanding of I was right..... ;-)

Seriously though Ed will be missed at the Quincy and the Copper Country in general. However, those swim trunks have got to go!! Good luck Ed :-)

By Liz (Liz) on Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 12:17 pm:

I have awesome memories of working for Ed at the Quincy Mine over the course of 9 years...in between high school, college, and careers. I learned a lot from Ed about the history of our area and grew to appreciate the lives of the miners. Driving the tram on sunny days, cooling off by giving mine tours when it was 90 degrees, giving moonlight tours in the hoist house...thanks, Ed, for being a great manager!

By Glenda Bierman (Glenda) on Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 07:01 pm:

Wow, we sure are going to miss Ed! Especially those of us who have worked with him on a day-to-day basis for the past several years. I can't imagine coming to work on the 21st and Ed not being there! I have learned so much these past few years working with Ed at the Quincy Mine. Thank you Ed for all the opportunities for learning and growth. I'm going to miss hearing you take those long scenic routes up the stairs to the office! I also am going to miss a friend :(

By Marg Rohrer (Marg) on Monday, April 14, 2008 - 01:23 pm:

Ed, do you remeber the May date when we went to put the Museum minerals in for the summer and we had a lot of snow and i slipped and fell and made a snow angel for you and Bob Barron. I will miss you and your family and wish you all the best in your future. Remeber the old friends and I know you will make many new ones as that is the kind of person you are. We will all miss your smiling face and you knowledge of the history of the church's and the mining district of Michigan.

Good luck!

By pat cattelino (Patcat) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 01:51 pm:

Quincy Mine and the Copper Country as a whole are getting the short end of the stick on this one. My days of leading tours and having Ed as a boss are some of my best memories. Ed has been a huge help and encouragement to me as I have gone on to pursue other jobs. Ed you will be missed greatly. I will always remember your tar-covered-tight-green-wool-pants in our atempt to fix that roof. Thank you for the memories, friendship, and mentoring you have provided to me and others over the years.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 06:28 pm:

Hope all's well with Ed + his family.
