It's easy to remember Alex Voelker's birthday, February 28, 1998. That just happens to be the day the Pasty Cam was born, too.

Good morning Pasty friends. Doesn't anyone sleep anymore?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 02:41 am:

Not me! When you get my age you can't sleep anymore OR the opposite-- you nod off anywhere, anytime!
Good Morning anyhow everyone!

By Bill Howard (Whoward) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 04:10 am:

I took the advice of my sister-in-law Mary Ann Lukonich from Ahmeek. "You can sleep when your dead". lol. Either that or just wait until your arthritis flareup calms down and can go back to sleep. It's a great day to be alive. Good Morning to all

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 07:08 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! It is somewhat calm here in mid-Michigan now, the calm between two January storms. We had a severe thunderstorm last night, complete with heavy rains, high winds, and marble-sized hail. A fair amount of it pounded on the west side of our house. We'll have to look at our siding this morning, to see if the wind and hail did any damage. We have more heavy rain and high winds predicted for this afternoon. This is wild, wild weather for January! I saw that southern Wisconsin had a tornado that killed 2 people in January! Ouch!

Marsha: how is your daughter doing?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 07:19 am:

Good morning!

LOL at you can sleep when you're dead. It's what I always used to tell my teenaged son when he slept all day. I say get up with the birds and enjoy life.

Love Alex's shirt!!! My grandson's b'day is also February 28.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 07:54 am:

Please keep baby Ali and her family in your thoughts. The last update from her dad is not good and very sad. :(

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 08:04 am:

I saw the posts late last night asking about my daughter, but I figured it might be too late for anyone to see if I answered. Lisa got out of traction New Year's Day. It's been since Thanksgiving. So she's tickled to be able to lie on her side now. She is supposed to have her first skin graft this week, if all goes well. They might be inserting a pin in about two weeks. It'll take a lot of rebuilding to do that. Thanks for asking everyone!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 08:13 am:

Sounds like significant progress, Marsha. Thanks for the update.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 08:33 am:

Ali's never very far from my thoughts, nor is her family. Still hoping for a miracle there.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 08:41 am:

Good Morning all. Happy to hear your daughter is making so much progress, Marsha!

Very foggy in Laurium this Morning, and it froze so the steps were slick going to work. My son didn't believe me and wiped out so he told me it felt good (must be the "Y" chromosome). have a good day!

http://www.waterwinterwonderland.com/restaurants.asp I posted this late last night, here it is again for those that missed it.

A little Red Wing holding a Montreal stick; what's up with that????

Sounds like you guys are getting pounded with some wild weather up there. We hit a record high of 80 yesterday but I hear that same storm system is going to push through here later this morning with a line of storms. It already looks ominous outside......

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 10:52 am:

It's been raining since last night here in Lansing. If it was snow, we'd be up to our armpits by now. We had thunderstorms and tornadoes in Michigan last night. Too crazy for January in Michigan. If you don't like the weather in Michigan, just wait a while.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 11:01 am:

I have family in Kenosha, they are all fine it missed them but was a scare since its January. They lived in Kansas for quite a few years so normally the Tornados hardly make them flinch, but the timing of this one made them pay attention.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 01:50 pm:

Had quite an experience with the weather last night. It sure felt ominous as I drove home in the warm, humid air, watching the clouds moving fast. We got home and I turned the Weather Channel on. They were talking about the tornado that had hit southeastern Wisconsin. A few minutes later a tornado warning crawl came onscreen, warning us there was a tornado in the same storm cell, about 20 miles offshore of Grand Haven and moving Northeast directly toward our porch light at 50 mph. Yikes. From the projected arrival time, I knew we had time to decamp. No way was I gonna try to second guess someone at the NWS looking at a hook echo on a NEXRAD scope. Got the kids & dawgs in the car and pulled out just as the leading edge of the storm approached. We got out of Muskegon and chilled out in a McDs in Coopersville until the warning expired. All was fine when we got back home, not even any branches down, just evidence of a massive downpour. But that was pretty creepy, knowing we were right in the crosshairs.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 02:00 pm:

I'm really glad that all is well, Dunerat! That would have been a really scary experience. We had a very small tornado come through here back in the early 1990's. I had to gather up my baby (still in an infant carrier) and our dogs, and high-tail it to the basement. My husband was out running errands with our older 2 sons. We lost some huge trees, as did our neighbors. One neighbor had trees drop on their roof of their newly remodeled family room. Another had a tree drop on his minivan, just seconds after he had gotten out of it gone into their house. That was pretty scary watching the swirling winds, etc. We did not get power back on here for something like 5 days. Some who lived out in the country had to wait longer for power, which is tough when you have a well for your water supply. All in all, we were all safe, and that is what counts! We had no warning, at least that I ever heard, back then.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 02:10 pm:

I'd like to have a better explanation of what those restaurant pictures really are, Tom Gehring. Many, if not most, of the pictures look to be at least 40 years old or older. There is one of the "Coral Inn" in Copper Harbor...that has been Harbor Haus since the '70s. And I wager most of the drive-ins are long gone.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 03:06 pm:

I think one of the drive-in restaurants is still open: the Dog n Suds in Montague. We drove by it this summer, and it looked like it was open and running.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 04:47 pm:

Thank you for the open Michigan drive-ins. I think there may be some A & W restaurants that are open, that are not drive-ins. I know there is one in Birch Run.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 04:57 pm:

There is still an A&W open in Grand Ledge (west of Lansing) and also at least two in Lansing. They are not drive-ins.

There used to be an A&W drive-in near the paper mill in Ontonagon that we would go to. That is long gone. There was also one at the very bottom of Keweenaw Bay between L'Anse and Baraga. It moved into L'Anse later on. That old building is still there. But I remember driving like 35 miles to go there for a root beer and a Papa Burger or a Mama Burger or a Baby Burger. Yummmm....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 05:10 pm:

There is an A&W in Berkley on twelve mile road that is open even in the winter. It has the car hops yet as does the one across from Barbs Pasty in Royal Oak and there is one in Farmington that is open also.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 05:37 pm:

ALEX SHOOTS AND SCORES!! He'll probably play for the NMU WILDCATS one day!!!!!!!

Mikie- yep there's the one in Farmington still open, and Tom's Rootbeer stand in Walled Lake, but there closed in the winter.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 05:40 pm:

Congrat's to, Les Miles and the LSU TIGERS, way to woop up on those Buckeye's!!!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 05:41 pm:

Uncle Chuck, good for Alex, time to celebrate! Wanna go sky diving now?

By sharon gregorich (Sharong) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 07:23 pm:

In Sault Ste Marie we have two drive-ins both on St. Marys River. West Pier by the Locks and Clyde's by the Sugar Island Ferry Dock. Both have car hops and great burgers.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 07:23 pm:

Cindy, I think that's the drive-in that my son says makes the very best root beer, et al. It is no longer A&W because they wanted to make their own root beer, not A&W's, or something like that. He loves that place, and he has been known to drive there from Houghton if he and friends get a real taste for it.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 08:11 pm:

Snowman- READY LET'S GO! ooohhh Mr. Neil, not me buddy, ain't enough cans in the world to make me jump out of a perfectly good airplane. lol

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 09:25 pm:

Oh how I miss the A&W Drive-ins. My hubby and I would go to the one in Ripley quite often. Maybe someone could open one here again in the Copper Country.
