Someone had requested a U.P. scene with a toboggan, and it made somebody's day 8 years ago on the Pasty Cam.

Good Morning from Harrison Michigan.

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 07:24 am:

Good Morning from very chilly Florida. It's 29º outside and the winter strawberries and Oranges are iced down. Man, what I would do for a windshield scraper this morning :) lol

By P.Weed (Pweed) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 07:55 am:

34 degrees in Tampa!!!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 08:00 am:

Brrrr....that's cold for Florida and we'll feel it when we buy fruit in the coming weeks. Ouch!! I'd be happy to have 34 degrees about now. We have 2 in Lansing with wind chill 15 below. At least there's good traction in these temps.

Theresa-a buddy of mine graduated from MTU and moved to San Jose, CA. several years later they had the first snow in ages. everybody was wondering what to do. my buddy calmly reached behind the seat for the trusty snow brush, brushed off his car, and drove away, leaving the natives to wonder "what was that thing"

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 08:29 am:

Didn't have time to read all yesterday's posts, but scanned over them at 11:30 p.m. (Should've been in bed.) Yes, Kosk, it was me who tipped you off on the Steve Hamilton books. I can feel the icy wind off the lake when he describes it! Be sure to also read Joseph Heywood, although I just finished his latest and had a hard time trudging through it. It didn't interest me at all and was too long and tedious, way too much information.

Back at school today. I could get used to these two-day work weeks!

Speaking of wind chill....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 09:13 am:

Good Morning, Everyone from frigid mid-Michigan. Theresa, a credit card or a driver's license will work to scrape ice off car windows, when in a real pinch like that, down there. Just don't use a glass aspirin bottle, or the likes. When we lived in Texas, we bought a used car that some crazy has used a glass Excedrin bottle to scrape the windshield; at least the scratched part was in the upper part of the windshield that was not critical viewing range. That's a bad, bad idea, though! (Glass on glass scratches.)

I forgot to mention yesterday, that some crazy, near Flint, tried to thaw his pipes (house) with a blow torch, with the expected (to most people) fire, resulting. I laughed hard when I heard that one. Sorry, I would expect that in Texas, where the pipes run under some of the rural homes that are sitting on cinder blocks, off the ground. But, I expected better here in Michigan, where cold weather is the norm, rather than the exception. And, it was not even that cold yesterday! I hate to see what happens today, when it was below zero near Flint this morning! (It was a little warmer up here, with our cloud cover.)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 09:19 am:

We are going to feel more than just the fruit from Florida, in the coming weeks. I heard last week that Florida has a big drought, with most of its counties' having already been declared agricultural disaster areas. We should see big shortages of things like tomatoes and lettuce and other fresh fruits and vegetables that would normally be coming from Florida in the next few weeks. And, of course, expect higher prices for fresh produce that will be in short supply for that period.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 10:03 am:

Marianne, my pipes froze once and I mentioned to my sons dad that I needed to keep an eye on the space heater I put under the trailer to thaw them out so a fire won't start. He actually said "isn't it too cold for fires to start?" Yes, he really said it, and to this day I have no comment.

By Doug (Greenhermit) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 10:18 am:

Anyone interested in mystery books set in the UP might consider picking up one of Henry Kisors' books about Porcupine (Ontonagon) County sheriff's deputy Steve Martinez and the crimes he encounters. The most recent of Kisor's three murder mysteries came out in November and is called "Cache of Corpses". Those familiar with Ontonagon and its surroundings will derive added pleasure from recognizing many of the "fictional" characters and places in his books. Henry is a retired book editor and literary columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, but has spent many summers at his cabin on the shores of Lake Superior west of Ontonagon drawing inspiration for his mysteries.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 10:28 am:

I am speechless, Brooke! It is true that heat is one component of the fire triangle, so cold weather might fool one (?), but the space heater was providing the heat source... I agree that a space heater is safer than a blow torch, but...

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 10:40 am:

If you want a true-to-life murder mystery that takes place in Ontonagon, you need to read The Sweater Letter. It's about a guy who graduated 3 years ahead of me in high school and his wife, who was one year ahead of me. The author is Dave Distel. Good reading!!

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 10:51 am:

Sunday night our son called and told us to turn the travel chanel on they was in Copper Harbor and it was so neat to see your favorite place in the world on the TV. They were scuba diving for agats and they found some nice agats but then the weather got really bad so they quit. Then they went to a copper mine I forget the name but it started with a C they showed then how to make neat copper things. They also showed that they also hunt agats in MN in open plowed fields all in all it was a really great thing to watch.

By Brian Teates (Bteates) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 11:31 am:

My personal favorite was in Spokane Washington when it was about 5 degrees out one morning. One of the neighbors decided he was to lazy to scrape off his windows and that a mop bucket full a steaming water was the quick and easy approach. Needless to say there was resulting sharp crack and spider webbing of the windshield immediately afterward. I didn't know wether to laugh or feel sorry for the guy.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 12:14 pm:

It is 56 here in the mid-keys and we have an expected high of 60(maybe) this afternoon. It is bright and sunny, though, and no sign of ice or snow.Enjoy your day wherever you are.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 12:24 pm:

The Sweater Letter was a very good book. I got it when it came out at Houghton Wal-Mart.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 12:57 pm:

My copy is autographed by the author. He was at a small bookstore in Lansing when it first came out and I got to meet him and chat with him and his wife.

BJmilford

The frosty morning makes you wish you were back in Dollar Bay. About -4 on the Wisconsin side of the lake at around 4:00 am when I let the dogs out. The black lab didn't stay out to long but the Elkhound loves this weather. Had a hard time getting him in so I could get to work on time. I wish you a happy new year BJ and to all.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 01:24 pm:

The show on the Travel Channel is called "Hunt for Cash and Treasures" and those are two separate shows Janet. The Lake Superior agate show was in Copper Harbour and in Minnesota farm fields. The other show was on copper mining in the Keweenaw and they visited Caledonia Mine near Greenland. Even though the show focuses on how rich you can get off minerals, I still like watching it to see a lot of places I have visited over the years. The Copper Country shows were just soreal for the Dr. and I.......

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 02:06 pm:

I've read "The Sweater Letter" and enjoyed it very much, but I don't
know the author from Ontonagon or Kisor either. Thanks for the
tips. Have the rest of you checked out Nancy Barr's mysteries?
She's a journalist in Escanaba.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 02:12 pm:

I heard a rumor that my house and some of my neighbors' houses were on that show about diving for agates. I wonder when the show was filmed: if I'd been here, I'm sure I would have seen them. Since I don't get TV out here at the east end of the harbor, I didn't see the shows.

However, it makes me wonder if some of the rocks in my fireplace are agates, since they were fished up out of the harbor in front of my house.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 02:16 pm:

Next time the Capt and the lovely Doc are up there you should ask them Sharon.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 02:27 pm:

I love the Nancy Barr mysteries. I had no idea she is from Escanaba.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 03:29 pm:

Judging from the leaves on the trees I would say the show was filmed in July to correspond with Agate Days in Moose Lake, Minnesota. It's very possible your house Sharon and your neighbors were pictured on the show, but I wasn't looking specifically and even if I were, I wouldn't be able to recognize your house ;-)

We'd love to identify your fireplace Sharon. Unfortunitely it probably won't be this year as the Dr. and I are going to Scotland and Ireland in July. I suppose if the fireplace is built from rocks off Copper Harbour, chances are there's probably an agate or two in there. The most beautiful fireplace I have ever seen was north of Thunder Bay, ON at a friends cabin. He has claims on a few amethyst deposits and built his fireplace out of amethyst and citrine quartz; simply amazing.....

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 04:05 pm:

Capt. Paul I bet that is just beautiful.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 06:04 pm:

Just want to bring your attention to Ali. It's a very sad day for the Lewis family. I know you don't know who they are but, they are Yoopers and that should count. I started a thread for her ever since the poor little 8 month old baby girl was diagnosed with leukemia. She is not going to make it. Please, please, pray for her. I beg you. Please.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 11:42 pm:

Snowman --

I'm praying for Ali tonight. May God hold her in His arms.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, January 4, 2008 - 12:23 am:

Snowman my heart goes out to the family and they will be in our prayers, I can not imagine the sorrow of having a child diagnosed with something so terrible that will take there precious bundle of joy away. God has a reason to call someone so young to be with him and holds them in a very special place in heaven.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Friday, January 4, 2008 - 03:52 am:

Mystery writer Nevada Barr has already written one book about Isle Royale and I just read last week that her new book will take place on the island during the winter. She's a good read for anyone who likes the National Parks.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, January 4, 2008 - 06:35 am:

You are so right Tim. I'm happy she has another on the go about
Isle Royale.
