Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 06:35 am:

This feathery critter was spotted by Keith Knighton and his dad Ken, in the Calumet area. They noticed him up in the tree around 5 p.m. one evening and Keith snapped some night photos that didn't turn out so great. He figured he had just missed the shots, since it was too dark for further snapping. But to his amazement, the owl was still perched there in the same place the next morning. They watched him throughout the day, as he eyed up a pile of sunflower seeds Ken puts out for the squirrels and rabbits.

Thank goodness this owl decided to stick around, so Keith could snap a picture for us to enjoy. He gave him plenty of time, since he was there for about 24 hours, before he moved to a pine tree.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?.... Said the Wise old Owl... one two, .... Three! Owls always remind me of that commercial. Great pic by the way. I have only seen one owl in the 10 years I have been in Florida, but used to see them all the time in the Soo as a child sitting on the roof tops getting warm by the chimneys.

There you go with those birds again. I'm going to have to change my desktop again. Ah, the troubles of keeping current. Cool picture. I know he/she is looking right at me.

Great owl picture, the owl looks sleepy.

I always liked The Who. Good old rock & roll.

Owls are so ugly they're cute. LOL

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 08:02 am:

That looks to be a Barred Owl, which are fairly common in the UP and the eastern parts of North America. They have one of the more unique sounding "hoots" in nature.......

Hi
I have not seen an owl in the wild, but I have heard them. I've been on night hikes where the naturalist plays tape recordings of the calls and the live birds call back. It's not that easy to tell from that angle---I'd like to see the breast feathers---but I think that is a barred owl. The call can be thought of as "Who cooks for YOU? Who cooks for YOU, all?"

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 08:48 am:

Love your owl! If you squint your eyes a bit, sorta looks like a giant pine cone! Beautiful feathers! Thanks!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 08:59 am:

Now this picture is a real HOOT.

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 09:13 am:

What do you get when you cross an owl with a goat?

A hootenanny.

Good morning! Looks like that particular bird is too cold to fly... -13 here, this morning.

By Steve L. (Steveexyooper) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 10:54 am:

What a hoot!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 02:03 pm:

Great shot, great composition.

By David t Hainault (Davehainault) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 02:29 pm:

Well, it's 12:30, here in "sunny" Colorado, and warmed up to a blistering +6 - one degree warmer than Hancock, under its grey sky! I check the bridgecam everyday, just to compare... Have a great day, everybody!

By B. McKamey (Bmckamey) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 03:05 pm:

Great photo. I wonder, though, whether the owl was eyeing the sunflower seeds or the squirrels and rabbits?

By David t Hainault (Davehainault) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 03:32 pm:

...or the cameraman; I understand that owl are ratehr shy creatures, "who" don't particularly enjoy having their picture taken.

By Just me (Jaby) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 04:17 pm:

Awesome photo!!!

By Therese (Therese) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 04:42 pm:

Kathryn, your owl sound was the closest to the barred owl I have heard. (Who cooks for YOU, who cooks for YOU now.) Incidently, if an owl appears in a Shakespearean play, it must be a Bard owl. (Sorry!)

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 06:54 pm:

Back in high school I asked my French teacher if the owls in France said:
qui, qui, qui

By Snowman (Snowman) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 06:58 pm:

Thumbgardener, that is so cute. Kinda like when you are thirsty and you say; "eau, eau, eau!"

By Kniton2 (Kniton2) on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 09:47 pm:

Bmckamey,

Since the owl appeared after Christmas (and subsequently a different day after New Years) there appears to be two missing snowshoe rabbits and a quail from the yard.

Looks like my dad is gonna need some new ground animals :)

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 01:32 am:

sweet owl!!

speaking of animals..we have a huge snowshoe rabbit in our yard. my dad has seen it, said it's bigger then the neighbors tom cat lol thats when you know that is a big rabbit that the poor cat is smaller lol i have only seen the huge indents this rabbit leaves in the snow, i think it likes to hide out in the doghouse (and no there isn't a dog in the doghouse...havent had a dog in almost 3 yrs) because the neighbors cats hide out there too summer and winter when they can lol
