With winter winds blowing and snow covering the ground here in the Keweenaw, you won't find many rock hounds combing the beaches of Lake Superior for agates. There are still a few diehard searchers though, like these two captured by Joyce Tormala. Well, at least one of them is looking for agates, the other hound has one thing and one thing only on his mind - fetching sticks. Looks pretty chilly there on the beach and it looks to me like snow falling from those clouds in the distance. Brrr...

Boy, that water looks way too cold to be out there!

Joyce Tormala has a lovely picture in the Pasty Cam 2008 Color Calendar, which happens to grace the month of October. The colors and the resolution in the larger calendar format are amazing. See a slideshow of the calendar photos and order yours today by clicking here.

Misery Bay?

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 10:28 am:

My two Golden retrievers who spend their summer swimming in Bootjack were very envious when they saw the morning picture!!! The charm of the copper country never ends--each season has its own special beauty. One can always enjoy the great outdoors. Wish we were there ---we miss God's country.

Dorothy:
You made some comments recently about the Koffee Kup in Hancock and the snow. You must be from there as a kid. I was too. Perhaps we have some mutual friends. I was class of 1953.
Snow coming to Wisconsin today.

If a dog likes the water, it doesn't make much difference what the conditions are. We've had a couple of Golden Retrievers, numerous GSD's and even more Bull Terriers (as featured in the Budweiser and Target ads). Of these, the most passionate Lake Superior swimmer was a Bull Terrier. As a breed, Bull Terriers DO NOT like bad weather or getting wet, so he was an exception. This fellow would use any opportunity to get in the Lake and would not come out. You would have to wade in and catch him.
On his last trip to the cabin he was old, arthritic, and almost blind. He had a good time on hikes in the bush but showed very limited interest in the lake - it was October and I thought he finally had some sense about cold lake water. On the last day I had some repairs to do on the back of the cabin. He was hanging around , supervising; then I noticed he was gone. As I started to look for him he returned, soaking wet, with a big dog grin on his face. He had his swim.
He must have known it was the last chance. He died several months later.

I remember one easter agate hunting on whitefish point. That must of been in the early to mid 70's. Mom and Dad would make breakfast and we eat in the snow banks. Still snow to the roof tops. And at night we would stay at Curly's motel in Paradise. I wonder are they still there? That was a real great time :)

Who is this and whose dog?! This looks EXACTLY like my dog! Would love to contact person and dog. Maybe we have twins!

By J.T. Toivola (Joyce) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 11:32 pm:

Last February I saw the ad for pups to be given away: "Mother is Yellow Lab and father comes from a good neighborhood." I brought Champ home on the 26th of February at the age of 6 weeks.
One of the dogs in the good neighborhood is a Husky, definately the sire because two of the pups had blue eyes, one was bi-eyed and the remaining pups had brown eyes. He hails from Obenhoff Road in Atlantic Mine.
I wanted another beach buddy (Be careful what you wish for!) and this dog meets the qualifications and then some.
These pictures were taken on Thanksgiving day. While the turkey was roasting,we took a quick trip to Agate Beach in Toivola. It was bitter cold with a strong north wind and more snow on the way. The drama in the sky was beautiful, though it didn't last. By the time we hiked back to the car,the sky was white and it was snowing heavily. My daughter, dogs and I had a great time. There are so many blessings to be thankful for, including the furnace, good food, good company and a few moments of sunlight peeking through the menacing clouds.

Hey RHB -- I was just through Paradise this past July before the big fire hit the area -- and Curly's Motel is still there. I went to the Yukon Inn which is across the road from Curly's and bought a red hooded sweatshirt that I'm wearing right now. I also stayed at Curly's quite a few years ago for a snowmobile trip. But then again.....anything north of the Mackinaw Bridge is PARADISE to me!!
