In case you're wondering, for the most part, the only leaves left on the trees are a few oaks, like yesterday's shot and it seems like the Maple trees that ended up with that black spotted disease on their leaves, are still hanging on too. In today's Pasty Cam shot, Tom Cook figures he's captured the "last of fall" and where it fell in the Munising area besides! I can't vouch for that, but I can say that his pine tree cradling those "last of the leaves", reminded me that Christmas isn't too far away. But first we get to be thankful for all we've been given, in the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday - little more than 2 weeks away.

Beautiful picture! We saw all those black spots last year while there and wondered what they were. Hope they're not killing off the trees.

Whoa, thanks for the warning, Mary.

This color combination is very pleasing to the eye!

The best of this season...beautiful leaves and hearty pine needles. What more could we want?

By Iron Range Dave (Blackhawk) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 08:23 am:

Kay, me personally, lots and lots of snow!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 08:50 am:

and riding our snowmobiles on freshly groomed snowmobile trails!

Nice to see a photo of an eastern hemlock - don't see too many of those outside of the UP, Canada and the NE colonies. Yet another species under attack by pests (hemlock woolly adelgid, in this case).

Thanks, Tom! :)

it's a combination fall/ winter picture. The color is perfect

Looking back at the first year of the Pasty Cam ('98), history repeats itself - just one day off - as the first 'sticking snow' of the season fell. Here's a summary of the Bridge Cam page, minus the Copper Harbor Cam (which has no white yet):

Thank you, Charlie. That is a great comparison!

I love the brightly colored maple leaf on the gorgeous evergreen! That could be the front of a Christmas card, or a calendar picture! Thank you, Tom Cook & Mary!

My son reminded me that he will be home next Friday for Thanksgiving week. I don't know where this fall & this year went! So much to do, and so little time to do it in, et al. And Christmas is just around the corner, something I wasn't exactly ready to think about, just yet. Thanks for the time warning, Mary!

Eastern Hemlock in part of N. Marquette County were hit by the hemlock looper worm last summer so the DNR suggested we spray the specific bacteria that kills them. We didn't see one looper on our trees this year and the new needles on most of them came in well. Apparently they just nip the tip off and suck the juice from the needle! and if the infestation is large enough it kills the tree. When 90% of the trees around your camp are hemlock this will get your attention. This past weekend was like Indian Summer up there but we got the water drained and "icebox" emptied and all shut down in expectation of the present storm.

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 03:04 pm:

Storm in Calumet? It blew really hard all night, but was
finished by noon. Marquette got 10 inches, but we got
a dusting... not enough to scoop! This weekend is the
32nd anniversary of the sinking of the Ed Fitz. Last
night's wind reminded me of that storm

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 06:36 pm:

Wow, has it been 32 years already??? Of course what am I saying, I was only 1 when the Fitz went down, and Dr. Nat wasn't born until 3 days later in 1975. Uh oh, did I just give away her age??? ;-)

I wonder if anyone in the Copper Country like's the mess our roads are in since the MDOT took over the snowplowing. They sure are slushy & slippery in the early morning when everyone is leaving for work.

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 07:16 pm:

Sounds like an early happy birthday is in order for Dr. Nat. Enjoy. Capt - hopefully you'll be serving her breakfast in bed on her birthday!

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 12:12 am:

RCW: I agree; I've lived here all of my life and have NEVER seen the main roads worst than they are since MDOT took over the plowing. They salt when they shouldn't and don't salt when they should.

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 10:31 am:

Speaking of MDOT, where did they go?

I see the old Ice arena on the Hubbel stretch
where they had their garage last 2 years is empty again.
