On a sunny October 27th in 1999, the first driftwood to appear on the Pasty Cam. It wouldn't be the last.

When we were allowed to be on the beach at Gay, there was a huge piece of drift wood. Have lots of pictures with family posed on, in and around it. There is another root base on Sunrise Beach that folks keep adding pieces of sandstone to as decoration.

Good Morning. 45 degrees, windy and cloudy here in Houghton.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 09:30 am:

Good morning :) Rainy here on the southern shores of Indiana, with wind gusts expected to be up to 20mph. Was hoping to get out to the apple orchard with friends today. Hoping tomorrow brings better weather ;)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 09:40 am:

Good morning from clear and sunny Clayton, New Mexico!! It's about 34 outside and not a cloud in the sky. We're on our way to Denver for the GSA conference but this morning the Dr. and I are going to check out some recent volcanoes in the area (around 3000 years old).....

By NKR (Nkr) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 09:42 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Gloomy and 51° over here Sur5er. It seems so odd to look out and see most of the trees still green. Weird October.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Good Morning, from rainy and soon to be windy mid-Michigan. Our team had a great night last night, winning their playoff game with some amazing plays in the fourth quarter!

Good luck to Calumet this afternoon. I was sorry to see that Lake Linden-Hubbell lost last night, but at least L'Anse is still in the hunt!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Capt. Paul, you're in my neighborhood. Capulin is pretty old, but the view to the west for the Sangri di Christo's are just great. Turn around and you can almost see my house four hours away. The sky is clear, but the wind chill takes us to about 45. Hope you saw old Rabbit Ear. It's my favorite sight.

I love the middle pic of the driftwood. Looks like somebody's skeleton--great for halloween.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 10:45 am:

I love driftwood pictures. They bring back so many memories with my mom, hunting for just the right pieces of driftwood that would be just right to be part of centerpieces, pieces for the mantle, and you name it!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 11:56 am:

Who took those driftwood pictures? I couldn't find it. Rainy day in Genesee, but the colors are beautiful nonetheless. Rain is supposed to end later, in time for the last night of the haunted forest at our church. Lots of decorating goes on in our area. Not by me though, as hubby's collections are infringing on MY side of our large shed, and I can't get to my stuff. Just have pumpkins on the front porch.

By Ken Scheibach (Kscheibach) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 12:09 pm:

Capt. Paul,
I just spent about 2 hours with Wikipedia, Google Earth, Local Live, et al, and find the area you're in to be fascinating. I hope we can get a photo report on your wanderings. The urge to skip the conference must be overwhelming :-) Thanks for pointing out this area and for putting me behind schedule for the day ;-)

Just did a double take. Welcome back, Sur5er! When are you
moving UP?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 04:07 pm:

Not soon enough, Kosk ;) Finishing up the paperwork on the big D. Demanded both attorneys get me home before the first snow falls...so we shall see, eh ;)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 06:01 pm:

Good for you, Sur5er!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 06:42 pm:

Captain Paul did you know that a volcano is a mountain with hiccups?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 08:20 pm:

WASHINGTON (Oct. 27) - NASA has agreed to search its archives once again for documents on a 1965 UFO incident in Pennsylvania, a step the space agency fought in federal court. The government has refused to open its files about what, if anything, moved across the sky and crashed in the woods near Kecksburg, Pa., 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Traffic was tied up in the area as curiosity seekers drove to the area, only to be kept away from the crash site by soldiers.
Eyewitnesses said a flatbed truck drove away a large object shaped like an acorn and about the size of a Volkswagen bus. A mock-up based on the descriptions of local residents sits behind the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Those of us who have America online saw this story in our welcome page today. Not worthy of a Off The Wall Page I think, but that's not up to me. I don't recall ever hearing of this incident. But then I was 14 in 65.
Do you think ours and other Governments in the World are not telling us the truth? We may not be the center of the Universe. I consider myself to be a Christian and would not feel any less of one if life is found out of this World. Some folks tell me,"Your not from around here are ya." I say,"You betcha not, I'am a Yooper.

Calumet Copper Kings won today 34 - 7; congratulations!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 10:11 pm:

naaa, the conference will be great. we had a wonderful time looking at capulin volcanic monument today. The Dr. and I capped off the day by driving to the top of Pikes Peak at 14,110 ft. Once we get back, I'll scan in a few pics and post........

You'll have to excuse me for some mis-spelling here; I'm doing this from a PDA in our hotel room!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 10:30 pm:

That's awesome, DaveofMohawk! Thanks for letting us know. I was about to go searching to see who won the game. Congratulations to the Calumet Copper Kings!

My dad was beside himself with happiness when he informed me
that L'Anse beat Lake Linden on Friday. You just don't find all that
many places where people care about high school sports as much.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 09:29 am:

Well Kosk, I know a lot more people that were disappointed in the outcome of that game than were happy. LOL

People out here care about high school sports too. We have highlights of the football games on the news all the time. And they really get into high school hockey.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 08:02 am:

Deb--Oops...but he's from L'Anse so he cheered for them. I'm
glad to hear that high school sports are alive and thriving in the
USA. Not so much here in Ontario--with the exception of hockey
which has a wide following at whatever level it is played.
