Eight years ago on this date there was ice around the edges of the swamp at the Cliffs. Not likely today, with a high near 70.

Catch some exciting U.P. sports action this weekend, as Houghton and Hancock square off in the Copper Bowl, and Michigan Tech invades Northern Michigan for their annual brawl. Find all of the streaming sports at Pasty.NET

By Lowell La Fave (Lowell) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 06:07 am:

Looks like I'm not the only one up this AM.
You all have good day. though it looked on the weather last nite that it might be a wet one again up there, Haven't had any rain since that storm went thru the other night. But very windy.

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 06:07 am:

Good morning from San Jose.

By Lowell La Fave (Lowell) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 06:09 am:

Looks like someone finally woke up. I was just getting ready to try to go back to sleep. Being a Nite Owl sometimes I'm up all hours of the nite.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 07:17 am:

Good morning. I like the icy picture at the Cliffs. Have a busy weekend planned this weekend. Have a Halloween, pumpkin carving party today with a bunch of family and in-laws. Then tomorrow we're going to meet up with Liz from Idaho on her annual trek to MN. Anxious to see her again. She's a great gal. Have a great day.

Today is Sweetest Day which, believe it or not, has nothing to do with showering your loved ones with gifts.

About 60 years ago, Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland man and a candy store employee felt that the city's orphans and shut-ins were often being overlooked and neglected. To instill in them a sense of being cared for, he distributed small gifts and candy to those who had fallen on hard times, with the help of his friends and neighbors, on a Saturday in October. Other Clevelanders soon followed suit, and the celebration came to be known as the "Sweetest Day".

So - - - if you bought any treats today, take them to someone in need.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 09:42 am:

We just got home from a Sweetest Day breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. I even bought! I have a great Sweety! Our local football team, Class D, won their game last night, beating our Class B neighbors 28-0 to finish their season 9-0! Now we wait for the playoff pairings and sites to be announced Sunday evening. Go Blue!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 11:05 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! Congratulations, Paulwebbtroll, on your team's win last night, and 9-0 season! Our team, Class A, won last night, making them 7-2 for the season, so we are also waiting for the playoff pairings and sites tomorrow, too.

We had another rainy and very windy day and evening, yesterday and last night for the football game. The wind yesterday caused more power outages around mid-Michigan. We were lucky and did not lost our power, this time. It is a lovely, autumn day today, after a less than great week! Enjoy your Saturday, everyone.

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 11:24 am:

Good morning, Another update on Uncle Chuck. He is still in the hospital. He now has pneumonia. They are checking his dyaphram. When they did the block to do surgery on his shoulder it affected that as well. He is feeling a little bit better, but maybe there through the rest of the weekend. He really appreciates all your prayers.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 11:36 am:

Praying for Uncle Chuck.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 11:38 am:

I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Chuck's complications from his shoulder surgery, Norma. My thoughts and prayers are with him for him to pull through the pneumonia and breathing problems very soon, and that he will have a speedy and full recovery from his shoulder surgery! Thank you for the update, Norma.

And, my thoughts and prayers are with Betty P. Colborn of AZ's husband for a speedy and full recovery from his shoulder replacement surgery yesterday! I pray that they can get his pain under control very soon! Uncontrolled pain can and does raise blood pressure, as well as it can cause a learned pain response, neither one of which is a good thing.

Does anyone know if the L.L./Crystal Falls football game is on the radio?

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 12:47 pm:

All I know is that it is scheduled for 1:30 PM today at Lake Linden. Todays picture looks like an optical illusion Charlie. The lower right front land looks higher than the rest of the picture and all of the ice looks like the water level had fallen a lot. The ice seems to be higher then the ground level. Are you confused now??

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 01:41 pm:

How about the football game in Calumet last night! Copper Kings shut-out the highly favored Marquette Redmen 27 to 0. High winds, cold and a steady rain. This means that Calumet gets a spot in the playoffs.

By upmama (Upmama) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 01:45 pm:

The Crystal Falls - Lake Linden game is on Iron River's WIKB radio station; 99.1 on FM.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 02:11 pm:

We had a Dr. Theresa Peterson as our school superintendant a few years ago. She was the high school principal at Crystal Falls when we hired her. She died 3 or 4 years ago from cancer. She was the super at Bath, Mi. when she died.

Do any healthy folks post comments on this site? I and most of my senior citizen friends who never smoked nor abused alcohol and ate only nutritious food have normal BP, aren't overweight, take no Rx, and see a doctor only for check-ups. We haven't had the flu nor colds nor any illnesses for many years. I don't think that is luck, it is just common sense living.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 05:32 pm:

I'm healthy, I do everything I'm not supposed to do. That includes not listening to what I'm supposed to do. In fact I'm so healthy that I chase the dog around the house.

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 05:37 pm:

I forgot one very important thing that I and my friends believe helps us stay healthy; we attend church regularly and we pray for the sick and needy. Those who are not well and who are recovering from sickness and injuries will be included in our prayers at church tomorrow and for as long as it takes for their recovery.
God bless.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 05:58 pm:

Hope your prayers include Uncle Chuck, my friend's little baby girl, Curt, Judy and Geno.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, October 20, 2007 - 07:39 pm:

Matt...you bet I'm fit! Fit and 51 yrs. old, 5' ft. and weighing at 112 lbs. My daily fitness program starts at 3:30 a.m. with hubby and I tending to our 10 horses and 3 dogs, before we go to work, and the farm work that goes along with our 20 acres. A recent doc. appt. my doc told me I was healthier than most 20-30 yr olds. I think my daily prayer has a lot to contribute as well!

Some very interesting Post's today! I'am just going to say this... The color's are comming out here in the Knoxville,TN. area the past two day's. Last week I was up in Townsend, and then took Wears Valley Rd. over into Gatlinburg, and there was very little then. We didn't get storms here, but it rained for afew nights in a row with temps in the low 50's. Tommorow is going to be one of the last nice days we will see, as a change is comming.

Soon we will have to start washing cloths In-Tide. Getting to cold Out-Tide.
