Jonathan took the drive to Brockway eight years ago today, and brought back this view of the journey for the Pasty Cam. It's quite a bit wetter this morning.

By Chuck K (Chuckclarkston) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 06:27 am:

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 07:54 am:

Good Morning from the windy city of Cedar Rapids, Ia. Expected temp of 58, with north-west winds up to 45 m.p.h. today! No raking leaves for me.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 08:04 am:

Wow, Chuck K, you're at work early...I hope that means you're outta there early. Good morning all you fellow Yoopers and Yooper Wannabees...isn't fall just the BEST season in Michigan!!

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 08:35 am:

I agree Cindy, Fall is the best time in Michigan. I wish I could come UP. But I am in Florida where it is currently 72º but heading into the 80's. Humidity is still very high. Chance of rain 20%.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 09:05 am:

For Paul(greenhermit) Gotcha! I knew someone yesterday would respond to my "fully empty"! Just surprised it wasn't someone else we hear from with corrections! Debated if I'd leave that in my post then decided to dangle that phrase and see who would bite! Have a good Wed. Paul :>)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 09:09 am:

I'm happy to see Deb/Mr Deb will be back. Guess their 'puter is half fixed (Paul...does that work for you?) Now if only Michael DuLong and Miss Renee were back my day would be complete. :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 09:25 am:

Good Morning from not so warm MN, it's about 38 degrees here and cloudy and windy.....a perfect Fall day!!!
Mr. Deb

If you are near your computer now, my son just called to tell me there is a freighter on the Portage. It is now visible on MTU's Fund Cam:

Fantastic!! I didn't know we could view the Bridge here. I now have a new favorite on my computer. Thanks Marianne :) The bridge is up and the Ship is going thru.

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:09 am:

Superior must be in a "mood" today or is this freighter unloading somewhere on the canal?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:11 am:

Good Morning all

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Watching that freighter go through the Lift Bridge is just totally awesome! I could watch those everyday. You're welcome, Theresa Bunk. And, I thank my son for calling to alert me that it was moving through. He saw it over by the Rozsa at Mich Tech as he was going to work or class, so he knew I would be able to see it, and it did show up in a couple of minutes!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:17 am:

Oops, sorry, Theresa R Brunk! I left out a couple of R's. I am sorry about that.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:46 am:

Good morning from central Indiana. The temperature (40's) here is indicating autumn. Finally. And the juncos have started to arrive. The foliage here is pretty drab this year. Even in the best of years, it can't begin to compare with the vibrant colors of UP. Sure do miss seeing it this year.

Sue

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 11:36 am:

Good morning from this windy and rainy part of the UP. I miss Mikie too Mikie where are you? Someone misses you besides Kay.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 12:21 pm:

Just clicked on everybodys' names and checked out their pics (of themselves). We should all be so brave! Nice pics Kay, Theresa, David & pal, Charlie & Mary, Deb & Mr. & more. I tried to remember who all had posted pics, but probably forgot someone!

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 02:11 pm:

Marianne.... I have been called worse. Drunk, Junk, Grand Funk, Stunk, crunk, munk, punk, my personal favorite.. Dead Brunk in the middle of the road and she stinks to high heaven....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 02:41 pm:

Theresa, I'm just sorry that I messed up your name. I like to get people's names right!

Did you have a job interview yesterday? If so, how did it go?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 02:43 pm:

I think there is an archive of the webcam of the bridge, but I don't remember how to access it. It would be cool to see if there are any pictures of the freighter going through it! Somebody had that information before. I wonder if someone would please let us know? Many thanks in advance.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 03:25 pm:

Had an interesting conversation today with one of my bosses about how I have always loved the UP and would like to live there. He actually asked me if I suffered from a head injury!

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 03:54 pm:

No problem Marianne... In fact I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. ;) Interview was last Friday. I am still waiting to hear about second promised interview. I emailed Personal Director with a little "thanks for the interview" note but I haven't heard back from them as of yet. I am not real concerned at this point cause I know they would get back to me sooner if I DIDN"T get the position.
Profile pic was taken in May 1993 somewhere east of Copper Harbor after my truck got stuck on a muddy snowmobile road. I was starving so I tried to eat at a local restaurant late that night and they told me the road I was on isn't open yet. The kitchen was closed but they found a few things for me to eat. Also they told me I was lucky to get out alive lol.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 06:36 pm:

I don't think anyone would have noticed it.So to me, it was a waste of one of 6 posts. To much talking going on between people today that is of no interest to many of us.It's one of the reasons why many don't stop by and look (shop) like they use to.Poor quality. It's nice to post in that the Bridge Cam has a freighter going thru. Many may say I'am being picky today eh? Tell me about it in a e-mail.I'am doing a survey. Can I get a Amen?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 06:59 pm:

Hi Kay! We missed you too!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 07:02 pm:

AMEN David!!! Mikie's computer is on the fritz!!!

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 08:04 pm:

I hear ya David.
And whats with trying to bait a certain someone for a correction ?? Only to just scold 'em for interupting all this chit chat fluff.

Are pictures allowed to be posted on here ?

Oh well,, Thats All Folks

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 09:43 pm:

Boy you just can't please some people. I gather that dig about corrections was re what I had said? I feel some just seem to sit back and nit-pit whenever some one makes a mistake. BUT then some complain that the site is gettting to dull for them. So what is it guys....too dull or too critical? Guess I'll just keep quiet and see what you want. Just count me outfor a while hey? Night-night everyone.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 09:55 pm:

Mskatie, I took it as a dig at me personally for correcting myself. I, for one, wish this site could just be polite to one another again, instead of all of these personal digs. I made a mistake, I corrected my own mistake, and I got slammed from the side, T-boned, if you will, for trying to be polite. I am at a loss for where they want this to go.

The comments about the weather this weekend were uncalled for. I kept quiet about it then. A number of the comments this weekend were hurtful and uncalled for.

By Gary Schrebe (Shrub31) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:09 pm:

Here I am in Houghton for a vacation staying right above the print shop in Houghton with a perfect view of the bridge and didn't know until I got on line down here by the Cybercafe that a freighter was going through. So I went outside and watched as it passed by and here I was without a camera. Dang! I was in a perfect position to take a picture and couldn't take advantage. Well I guess that is why people don't get good pictures of flying saucers.

I also had a pasty at the Hut today and it sure brought back some good memories.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 01:31 am:

I was being as polite as I could be.Flip Flop asked a question in his post.It is not a matter of pleasing some people,it is most of the people!Nobody is going to complain about things such as asking one,"how are you feeling, when you wrote you been hurt or sick. Or you just became a grandparent ect.,or you just want to say good morning and give a weather report. And Mskatie, put the bait out yesterday, which I personaly thought was funny when she posted it.Some folks type like they talk.We are all not scholars on here,if one misspells a word,or ends a sentence with a prep,so be it as long as the point was made.I think that's not polite. Many folks have been on here for some time and still don't know how to use everything this site has to offer.Yes,Theresa just using you as a example,i am glad you got that now.I don't want to see anyone leave from here.We are a good blend of people from all walks of life, with the love of the U.P. that this site is meant to be.I personaly know, about 9 folks that post here every day just about, off the top of my head. Now that dose not make me special or anything like that! And many out there we have become friends on here and just share e-mail.I am listed as many are in profile's,and i invite you to write me,as some have. And when they do most say this site is going downhill with the quality of posts. Not many have interesting things to say anymore.Years ago, todays picture of Brockway Mt. would have inspired someone to ask about the Hermit who lived up there, who passed on in 1985.We are just not getting the Quality out of this What's Up page that many of us expect,is the major complaint! What is so hard about sending a e-mail to someone on here you want to say something to,that the rest of us realy don't want to read? Too much of it is hard to skip over. Some just look at the name like mind above my post and say heck with that he never has anything good to read. There are many of us like that out there that are just plain boring. And so many that are not, like you Capt.Paul and the Doctor for another example, who are so eager to fill us in on things about the great outdoors of the U.P. we should send them a check!I'am guilty of many things on here too,I try to get you to lol,and there is no harm in good clean fun.Like we had with Babe Ruth and his bat the other day. There is no good reason to post 7 times a day, is there? Unless this is your only life.Admit it, you are a Pasty Cam junky, and you need your fix.I bet Mikie is missing it.My monitor fizzed on me,took me 4 days to fix it.I wasn't about to run off this hill to go buy a new one.Well i spoke my mind,if you think i'am not polite, you ought to read some of the e-mail i get about some of us.I think it is time for some to be alittle harsh on here, with no intent of hurting feelings. This maybe taken off by the webmasters,I don't know? But then also could be doing them a favor. Go and read the Acceptable Use Policy, and you will see it gets voileted often. It is in blue above each picture. And also try and save paper even tho we write on recycled Internet.Good morning early,I love you all, realy!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 07:13 am:

David, that was very long but I took the time to read it because it was so true. Good job saying what a lot of us wish we could have put into words. Nobody on this site wants hurt feelings at all. But what good is it to beat around the bush and not speak the truth?

By Snowman (Snowman) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 08:23 am:

Well said David! Wish everyone would just get along - - - and enjoy what this site has to offer. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. :o(

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 08:29 am:

I suppose the rule of thumb should be to not put into print anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face. The Golden Rule always applies. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Always good advice. Also, if you complain about the site and your are part of the site, then you are also part of the problem, don't you think? I admit that I am a pasty.com junky and I have to read it every day that I have a computer. Just imagine that we're all together at the local restaurant for coffee every morning. How would you behave then? I'm glad for the connection and the new friends and acquaintances. Be nice! Kindness matters.

By joanne sherick (Shedoesnails) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 09:28 am:

I have been a pasty cam junky for many years now and wanted to add my thoughts. my great grandparents came from finland to calumet in the early 1800's.my grandparents and uncles worked the mines and operated dairy farms. It's stories like this that I enjoy reading about. It's the history of the U.P. that interests me. we used to have these discussions and I really miss that. I enjoyed seeing old farm pictures and hearing about places of interest.and dicussions of the many unique people like the hermit as mentioned earlier.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 09:57 am:

Right on, David. Hope you don't get censored as so many of us have been. Sometimes we are just having a lively conversation. If people don't like it, they don't have to read it for Pete's sake. Just move along. As we all do when it's all just fluff. Really, most of us skim over most of the posts anymore. If we come at all except for the pictures.
Deb-glad your computer's back up.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 12:39 pm:

Apparently, a few people took my comment on Sat. to mean the postings on weather were boring. That was not my intent. David sums it up well. This site is not to be a chatroom. This is not to say that we regulars are not caring as to what is going on with the others, but there is a difference between updates and personal e-mails. I have learned so much from this website re: UP history whether rock formations or copper mining or characters that have made the area so unique as well as suggestions for good reading, music etc. It has just been a long time since there has been good conversation. However, this is a site for all of us...and if the majority want the fluff so be it.
