Once again we step back into the corridors of time for another Shoebox Memory and wonder... do kids wear turtle necks anymore?
cute
Seriously, on a fall afternoon in 1907 the whole Mountaineer football team scrubbed up, dressed up, and sat up for this group photo. Over the next hundred years the picture would pass through many hands (and shoeboxes) until one day a diligent worker at Dickinson County Library dug it out, scanned it in, and sent it down the information superhighway - ultimately to touchdown on the Pasty Cam. As always, a picture is worth a thousand words, and each face tells a story of hopes and dreams, fears and uncertainty, facing life in the new world of the twentieth century.

Iron Mountain High School has made a nice transition to the twentyfirst century with their online edition of the IMHS Alumni Newsletter, where you'll find some interesting history and answers to such burning questions as:

Closer to home, our hats' off to Calumet High School for defeating Marquette this weekend in a game heard live on Pasty.NET, where you also could have caught yesterday's play-by-play victory of Northern Michigan over Michigan Tech 34-27.

Too bad they didn't have Internet streaming back in 1907. Come to think of it, they didn't even have radio.

Have a good week :o)

I hope my brother checks this out today as he lives in Iron Mountain. Very interesting pictures. Thanks.

As I get older I seem to enjoy the older photos more. What are those things hanging around the necks of several of the players?

By k j (Kathiscc) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 09:33 am:

Hey, Michigan beat the pants off Illinois. Go Blue!

By Randy Jarvi (Randy) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 09:48 am:

Dickingrayling-- Just a wild guess, but maybe a type of noseguard? Holes for breathing, nose shape?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 10:42 am:

I was wondering what them things are also. Could be a early version of the breathe right nasal strips, but I was thinking a little lower.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 11:01 am:

they are indeed a noseguard...
here's a link with a perect picture and an explanation:

MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 21) - Max McGee, the former Green Bay receiver who scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl history in an unexpected starring role, died Saturday after falling from the roof of his Deephaven home, police confirmed. He was 75.

I was noticing that all of the guys had turtleneck sweaters on, except those who had suits on, before I read your description, Charlie. Turtlenecks are harder to find these days, but you do see kids in them once in awhile.

I read about Calumet's victory over Marquette yesterday. That earned Calumet a spot in the playoffs. That is awesome; Congratulations, Calumet!

By Randy Jarvi (Randy) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 01:07 pm:

I just read the description of the noseguard in the link. It sounds like "save the nose, lose the teeth".

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 01:41 pm:

Turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks shirts/sweaters are alive and well at Target and K-Mart stores.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 04:30 pm:

David, a very versatile little item.

By Interested visitor (Tangobravo) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 05:54 pm:

Sorry to hear about Max. He was my favorite Packer player back in the day.

By Therese (Therese) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 09:19 pm:

Hey, I can't look at last week's photos and comments; when I click on the bundle of last week's photos I get a message that the page 'no longer exists'.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 11:45 pm:

Hey! I can't get last weeks "Cam-Notes" either. Says the same --"no Longer exists" hmmmmm?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, October 22, 2007 - 03:14 am:

Thanks for the head's-up Therese and Russ. You can now browse to last week.
