Normally when E. Neil Harri sends me a photo, it's something from way up high, but today's first shot is of "Kaisa" the hunter. That's Neil's hunting partner, a Brittany Spaniel, which he says is a "working" dog, so I'm assuming he's quite good at his bird hunting profession. By the posture, it looks like he/she may have already spotted something, up ahead in the bush. Go get 'em, Kaisa!

Then as an extra treat, Neil also sends a picture from the air of the last of the color on the Phoenix Cliffs. That's Cliff Drive running parallel to the cliffs on the right and US 41/M 26 rounding the bend where the two roads meet. Still a little bit of color left there, but off to the south more, there seems to be quite a bit of gray, showing that a good amount of the leaves have already fallen. Thanks for the current update, Neil.

Looks like Mary and I are both light sleepers today! This was probably one of the most beautiful fall weekends in recent history. Good reminder how lucky we are to live here in the Copper Country.

There is nothing better to watch than a good hunting dog at "work". The dog always seems to enjoy its "work" also.

Both pictures this morning are beautiful! Thank you, Neil and Mary. I especially like the beautiful one of Kaisa, the Brittany Spaniel, through the beautiful trees, with the sun shining down highlighting the trees. Kaisa has her right foot raised, like a lot of dogs seem to do when they have something spotted of interest. I have forgotten whether Brittany's are sight or scent dogs, Neil? Thanks.

Kaisa is a female and loves her field work. Kaisa is the Finnish spelling of Katherine. She was on point there. The grouse population is up in Keweenaw this season.

Our neighbor breeds, raises, trains, and hunts with Brittanys. He shows his dogs all over the midwest in the type of field trials where he rides Tennessee Walking Horses. He raises both orange and white and liver and white marked Britts. They are great dogs!

My family and I took a drive yesterday that took us up by Lake Medora, Brockway Mountain, and then back home through Eagle Harbor and Eagle River.
Of course we took Cliff drive also, to take a nice look at the cliffs in the above picture. The colors are not as abundant as before, but the yellows in some places were splendid. What a beautiful way to spend three hours! Now I just hope my pictures turn out nicely.

What a beautiful dog and beautiful pictures.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 08:27 am:

I had a Brittany once. She was a great dog. I like them better than Springers because they're not so hyper. That's nice shot anyway. And the 2nd shot is absolutely breathtaking as always, Neil.

We had a brittany/spaniel when I was growing up. She (Jenny) was a very gentle dog that loved stale doughnuts. She also was a good hunter. Once she got a partridge on her own and brought it to my Dad and the darn thing was still alive.

Nice colors. The great nature of UP always fascinated me back in my school year.
A good amount of the leaves have already fallen? All the leaves are still green over in Japan :)

Taka, so nice to see a post from you!! How are you doing??? Please let us know and try to post a recent picture of you in the profile.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 11:18 am:

Hooray! Taka is back! It has been a long time.
What ever happened to www.cutonion.com?
Taka, we have missed you, and hope all is well with you!

Thanks Neil for making me homesick a little more and wanting to go out birding with a faithful companion like Kaisa. It was hard watching the Tech game on tv and not being in our usual seats at MacInnes, but at least we got to see the old arena once again.

I love that second shot because it gives one a sense of just how large the Greenstone Flow really is. There is a lot of geology represented in that photo; enough for a lecture or two at least....

Helloooo Taka!

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 01:18 pm:

I love the Brittany in the first pic. That is my favorite breed. I've had two of them in my life, but the last one was the absolute best dog I ever had. It was so hard when I had to put him down. I still miss him.

I have just purchased a house in Mohawk...does anyone know the range of the DSL there? I know it's a line of sight thing - where exactly is it located. Eventually, I will be moving up there, but, need high speed internet access in order to do so. Would anyone else know who does high speed access if I can't hit the pasty line?

By Therese (Therese) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 05:13 pm:

Dear Capt, lecture away! I always love to read your explanations of the geology of the Keweenaw.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 09:40 pm:

Welcome back Taka! Many of us have so much missed your pictures, and commented wondering where you were.

Keep in touch.

Hei Neil, my dad's grandmother's name was Kaisa. She was from Calumet. She died only 2 weeks before she would have been 100 years old.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 10:48 pm:

Ken, I was at a family affair the day before I was to pick up my new dog. I met a family historian for the first time in my life.
He told me of my great, great grandmother who was named Kaisa. She died in 1908 and is buried in the Eagle Harbor cemetary.I needed a female name so thats how Gramma's name made it to the AKC registry. I hope she doesn't mind.

Neil--It seems like an honor to me!

By Takashi Aoki (Taka) on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - 08:06 am:

Hello, Carol, Nash, Tom, maija, and everyone,

I'm currently working in Aichi in Japan. I'm too busy to pretend like working hard :-), so I have not managed to find the time to visit the USA since I graduated from MTU.
I haven't taken many pictures lately. The domain name of cutonion expired a long ago, and I couldn't find the way to update it. so the website is gone now.

Nice pictures Neil!

Hi Taka, I miss hearing from you and seeing your lovely pictures. I always use the beautful picture you took at Christmas of Houghton by the bridge for my screen saver. The lights were starlike!! I believe you said you lay down on the road to take it. So pretty.
