Through the years the Pasty Cam has seen almost constant maintenance on the Lift Bridge.

Good Morning, I was stopped for the bridge to go up for a sailboat last time I was up there. I was the first car at the light, pretty cool to watch it. You can feel it vibrate when it moves.

Good Morning, Everyone, from chilly mid-Michigan. Our low temp this morning was 40, at 5 am. Since my guys left before 6 am for the Hot Air Balloon Festival here in Midland, they had to dress for it. They have crewed for it for the last several years. It was too windy for the balloons to go up last night. It will go on again this evening and tomorrow morning. The evening After Glows are really cool.

It is supposed to go down to 35 tonight, so that will probably mean at least a Frost Advisory.

71 last night. Gloomy outside today here in West Texas.

Groan, this picture reminds me of the way the Portage Lift Bridge will look for the next month. Getting to and from work is gonna be a hassle!

i like the white knuckles on the wheel - nice touch

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 01:17 pm:

I read about the coming construction, Babyseal, and that MDOT allowed it to be postponed long enough for the International Day Parade this morning. I would hate all of those detours through town to get anywhere. We have been up there during construction before, and it is no fun! That's a bummer, especially when that's the only bridge at all!

I have an off the wall question. What happens if a ship hits the bridge? That has happened at different times, in different places, like Texas, Oklahoma, Seattle, & Lousiana, that I am aware of. But, at least those places, you could get around it, albeit with very, very long detours. Is there a backup plan up there, like a car ferry, or something? I know, give me 50 lashes with a wet noodle. I did not even think of it until this construction game. Sorry; my curiosity got the best of me.

Marianne Are you a good swimmer?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 01:35 pm:

LOL, Dickingrayling. Not that good to swim in always cold water, with me alone, let alone passengers, groceries, etc. We were cold up there on July 1 out in our boat on the Portage, when the air temp was 62, with 20 mph winds. I can't imagine anything colder on or in the water!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 01:36 pm:

I suppose, if I had a dry suit and it wasn't too windy... :-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 04:48 pm:

Well, they just posted a Frost Advisory for tonight (well for 2 am to 8 am) here in southeast Michigan, outside of metropolitan Detroit. They are predicting record lows for mid-Michigan, of 33 to 37. Now that that is their official prediction, maybe it will stay somewhat cloudy, so it won't get so cold here, at least I hope?

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 05:56 pm:

MARIANNE: A ship came close to hitting the bridge right after it was built back in the 50's. I'm not 100% sure but I think that it was like the day before the bridge was dedicated. They had to drop anchor to stop and ripped up all of the underwater power cables. The story was that the bridge-tender was sleeping but I don't think that was true; probably some mechanical malfunction.

On July 30th I drove across the now notorious 35W bridge that connected Minneapolis with St. Paul heading north. Two days later, safely settled at The Ramada in Hancock on my way up to my beloved place of contentment, I watched the up to the minute inaccurate coverage of the bridge collapse in my fair city. I would say anytime you see bridge repairs being done wave and say thanks!

Deb, I love seeing the Lake Linden sign too, it means I am about 5 minutes to Dollar Bay!!!!

Marianne, I went to a Hot Air Balloon Festival here in East ridge, Tn several years ago. It wasin the evening and was very beautiful. You could go right up close to them. I am glad they didn't catch fire or anything.

I vaguely remember when the new bridge was hit. People up there seem to manage to cope no matter what happens. They would probably ask boat owners to volunteer to haul people across. That time we got 21 inches of snow overnight the whole area was at a stand still. They called on people who had vehicles that could get thru snow to bring medications, food and any other things that they needed.
