Is it only a coincidence that our look back to 8 years ago finds another campfire that day on the Pasty Cam?

Reminds me of a Shoebox Memory...

Good Morning... As a child I always thought the smell of the old rubber tire was they way campfires were supposed to be. But we called them bonfires. So glad no one does that any more.

So far, so good. The new fiscal year begins October 1 and there are already rumors flying. We'll see. I am staying hopeful.

Good morning,

I'm a little under the weather this morning so I'm at home. The history of Smokey Bear is quite an interesting one; based on a real little bear cub caught in a forest fire near where the Dr. and I used to live in New Mexico. Below is a link that describes the history of Smokey and the ad campaign that has followed now for over 50 years.....

Good Morning everyone, a little dreary near Ann Arbor. Yesterday was my sons first day of school and it went well. He is upset since his girlfriend is not in his class, she is in the other 2nd grade class. he cracks me up.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 11:25 am:

One thing I learned quickly when I joined the Forest Service, his name is Smokey Bear, not Smokey The Bear! It seems this is important to the agency. Woodsy Owl is still around. The latest controversy is over the redesign of his outfit. (seventh item has pictures http://www.jaykayess.com/tags/uncategorized/page/2/). Another eco-mascot was Johnny Horizon. I couldn't find a good poster, but here is an image of a pin from an ebay sell (Johnny Horizon Pin - Ebay).

On a related note, Sen Tom Coburn from Muskogee, Oklahoma, my old stomping grounds, tried to cut funding for Smokey and friends. He thought the Government was spending too much money on cartoons!

Just received these photos from David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn), asking me to post them...here's what he had to say about the photos:

Quote:

Here are two Junior Smokey Bears from The Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, TN. Wonder if that makes them smokier then others? They were sure fun to watch play fighting with each other about twenty five yards in front of me. Didn't stay still much at all. Once they saw me I got a picture of Bear Butts that came out blurred. I also got one of Mama watching me watch her Cubs. She was hiding herself well, I saw her face only. I have been lucky to see a lot of Bears.

WELL! It looks like my bridge is going to have a few repairs coming up soon, according to the Mining Gazette. (I still call it MY bridge).

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 03:54 pm:

I just saw in the Mining Gazette's Obits that Kevin Musser has passed away at the age of 47. If you are unfamiliar with him, you probably have seen his work to preserve the Painesdale Shaft and history of the Coper Range railroad at his website (https://www.pasty.com/copperrange/index.html). Although I communicated with Kevin in email, I never got meet him in person. Such a shame to lose him so young. He did great work for Copper Country history.

By Theresa, Colorado. (Theresa) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 07:58 pm:

Just got back from a month's vacation. Spent two weeks in the U.P. Was glad to be there to see all my cousins after so many years. But the situation was sad. Mary's Mom was my Aunt CeCe. All Uncles and Aunts are now watching over us in Heaven. God Bless them.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 08:16 pm:

Wow Richard, I too just corresponded with Kevin last month. He indicated that he had been undergoing cancer treatment, but hoped to be up this October.

I also never met him, but I was so looking forward to it, as he helped so much with my book. The copper country lost a great historian.
