Once again remembering friends in our area who have passed on.

James Ahola
Jeannette Bessner
Alfred "Al" Bonanni
Stu Hayward
Eva Moilanen
Kevin Musser
Denise Lynn Narhi
Scott VanAbel

On a day much like the gray, overcast of this morning, Kevin Musser pointed his camera toward the misty reflections across Lake Bailey. A few months later we ponder the peaceful scene and remember Kevin, along with the other friends above.

You are welcome, as always, to add names and memories to these we honor.

In Loving memory of my oldest brother Michael C. Brunk December 25, 2005
And if I may, I lost my oldest cat Vanessa to diabetes this past month, September 13, 2007. I hope she is resting and is out of pain.

In loving memory of my dear mother, Violet De Martin, who passed away on Sept. 11, 2006, at 90 years old. I trust she is at peace with her husband and other family members she has joined.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 11:43 am:

I've been thinking about my dad, Edward Anthony, (TONY), Soumis a lot lately....perhaps its because of fall approaching, our favorite time of the year to go out into the woods.

He passed away on July 31, 1983, while in the woods, where he loved to be, making wood for the following winter. The ol ticker timed out for him. He had heart problems for a few years prior to the big one.

He was an honest man...very hard working, and a great dad...pretty good at hunting and fishing too. We spent quite a few evenings on the Sturgeon River..he catching walleye and pike, and me usually with the bullheads.

A little hard headed sometimes, but straight forward, always willing to help out those that needed it.

He was the Supervisor from Chassell for a long time, and Chairman of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners. He seemed to be either working all the time or participating in local politics....7 days a week.

He did take time for hunting around Thanksgiving, which was always an exciting time, and fishing in the evenings.
We used to spend a lot of time partridge hunting in the fall....also getting stuck in the Jeep while trying to find the muddiest logging road in the UP during the spring melt. Thank God for winches.

Missing my Mom, Betty Beaudoin who has been gone for nearly 17 years now. I know she would have enjoyed her great granddaughter's 1st birthday on September 27th. But we know she was here in spirit & has really never left us.

Remembering my loving father, a minister, who passed on a few years ago in September. He died from bone cancer but continued to serve the Lord, as long as he could, to other residents of the nursing home. No more pain now.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 04:22 pm:

Of course, remembering many relatives, friends, neighbors, that have gone on, can't remember any who passed in September, but know that many had birthdays this month.

My heart is heavy now as just yesterday the 29th, our 14 year old black Lab "Looper" passed away. She has had several health issues the past 2 years one of which was the contaminated food that was (is?) on the market.
A few minutes before I wrote this our neighbors dogs got out and attacked our dear old all white cat "Snowball" and killed him! He was declawed, very few teeth cause he was old, couldn't defend himself and never bothered anyone or anything. Unbelievable! Maybe we should consider selling and move to the UP where I came from!!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 04:26 pm:

In memory of my father who died September 12, 1984 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 73. I can't believe that as of last Friday, I am 2 years older than he made.
We also lost 2 long time friends and neighbors. Alice Nichols, who was buried Friday. She would have been 86 the day before her funeral. She made the greatest dinner rolls and cinniman(sp) rolls. Art Chase died September 21. He was 84.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 05:22 pm:

Like you, Russ, I've been straining to remember anybody I knew who died in September and could only come up with those who were born in September.

I'm sorry for the loss of your dog, and that's awful what happened to your cat. Something should be done with dogs like that. There's no excuse for it. I do think you should move. That would never happen in the UP.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 05:37 pm:

In memory of my Mom, Bernadine Spellich who left us on Sept 30,1978. She was the best, often going without herself so we had things we needed. We still miss you Mom but I know you and dad are happy together. Fran

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 05:41 pm:

Russ, I was sorry to hear about Looper yesterday and today I was stunned to learn about Snowball being killed. Such a sad weekend for you.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 06:30 pm:

Russ, I know how you feel about your cat. I tease alot about Jimmie the fat white cat but would be heart broken if he was killed like your snowball was. When I was a kid my cat was climbing in construction pile of boards with nails in them and the dog jumped on the board and sent a nail thru Mittens, about sixty years ago but like it was yesterday.

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 06:48 pm:

Russ, I am heartily sorry to learn of the death of your two companions. It has not been an easy month. Take solace in the fact that your many friends and fellow readers are keeping you in our prayers, today and always.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 08:32 pm:

Well said Theresa.

I am so glad to have had the love from Looper. She loved seeing me pull up your driveway,Russ. She was a sweetheart.

Also it has been 12 years this month since Barbie lost her Mother Genavieve Ellis (Oliver)(Childress) from Detroit born in Cades Cove in the Smoky's.To young to go in her late 60's.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 09:20 pm:

Remembering my mother-in-law, Florence DeBroka Brown who passed away last Sunday, September 23, 2007. She is missed by 2 daughters, 2 sons, 2 sons-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law, 10 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. I know she is now with my oldest son, Andy now.
Sur5er, so sorry to hear about you step daughter.
Russ, I know how hard it is to part with a pet.

Keeping those who lost loved ones this month and those remembering loved ones lost in my prayers.

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 10:47 pm:

Remembering my former father-in-law Tom Mateer who passed on Sept. 13. He visited us a few times from N.J.when we lived in the U.P. He always enjoyed his visits and the fishing. He saw pictures of what it was like in the winter and opted to visit in the summers only. He always had a story.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 11:12 pm:

Russ, I am so sorry to hear of your losses this weekend! It's hard enough to lose Looper naturally, but then to hear of your cat's death is just plain senseless! My heart goes out to you! Hang in there! And I hope you don't wait too long to get a new pet. It will never take the place of either of those that you lost, but it should help you.

By Gary Schrebe (Shrub31) on Sunday, September 30, 2007 - 11:26 pm:

Marianne, your right about the snow. With clock work I can just about guarentee that there will be some kind of a snow storm next week while I'm up there. Over the years watching the fronts come through in ever increasing severity in the first 2 weeks of Octber is a certainty. This year I'm kind of looking forward to it because it's been so hot with no rain down here in TN all summer that having some mositure and cold nights next week is something I'm looking forward to having.

By Cindy Barth (Shekinah) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 03:24 am:

Mikie, Sharing your sadness with the death of your two companions "Looper" and "Snowball"
Hope it's not to sad when you go to do something that they were apart of and then they are not there.
Thinking of you, your extended family and friends that may/will miss them as well.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:37 am:

Cindy, It was Russ who lost his dog and cat. I lost mine about sixty years ago. When I had to put Max our Yorkie down I left my office to meet Precious at the vets she had Max with her. They had already started the proceedure and I walked in. Max was so sick that it was hard to lift his head but he did when I walked in he licked my hand and rested his head in my hand. When the doctor put the needle in his side he reached over and bit Precious on the hand then just layed down and passed away. This was the only time he ever bit anyone. We had been treating him at home giving him the injections and the meds that the vet sold us for him and kept him alive for two years longer then he normally would have had. He was a good dog.

By William J Mullen (Billmullen) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 09:02 am:

My good friend, hunting buddy, and business partner of over 20 years died one year ago last week of a heart attach while cooking supper for his wife. They lived in a large valley in southern Colorado. Kevin Hayner was only 54. He grew up in small town Minnesota and spent 2 summers on Isle Royale while a student at U of M in Duluth. I miss him terribly.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 - 12:17 am:

Thanks to all for the kind words regards the loss of our pets.
Also thanks to all for the especially thoughtful and touching rememberances this month for any and all that have passed on.

Marianne: Not to worry. We have Loopers sister that is 13 years old and hanging in there! Also 2 of her nieces about 5 years old! Also a couple of other House cats so none of them or us are lonesome thank goodness but the pain of the loss is still great.

Theresa: Your words are especially appreciated!

Cindy: Yours too, just found out our 2 Granddaughters are especially devasted by this as the lost pets were their particular favorites!

By lori labelle (Westhoughton) on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 09:58 pm:
