Darn it Deb! You beat me. Although you didnt get the early bird either. I will admit that I was trying for it today. Darn it all...

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 08:26 am:

Just a little late getting the Pasty Cam published today, coming from a motel room in Grayling, MI in the L.P. Edie and I, along with my mom, are on our way to the Detroit area, where my mom will catch a flight back to her home in Alabama. Edie and I will be guests on the "Internet Advisor" program on WJR radio tomorrow (Saturday) night, sometime between 5pm-7pm. You can catch it online here.

Good Morning, You All! Happy Friday! Congratulations to Thumbgardner on your Early Bird!

This is almost the end of summer. The high school football games begin tonight. Our high school has an away home game tonight. And, at least Michigan Tech has a football game tomorrow.

I don't know about you all, but I'm not ready for summer to be over!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 08:45 am:

The other day I was talking to a mom of 2 high school boys. She said they are so busy right now with football practice, etc. that they wouldn't be able to get away for a vacation if they wanted to. She feels that all that should not start until shool starts and I agree. It seems to defeat the purpose of school starting after Labor Day to help with the tourism.

Thanks, Marianne. It wasn't so early or I wouldn't have had a chance. Glad you are posting again. I hope you are healing well.

Good morning from a wet and soggy Mishawaka IN.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 08:58 am:

Speaking of the kids already being so busy: our high school has had marching band every day this week, running from 9 am to 9 pm, with 1-1/2 hours off for lunch and dinner. Today, they just have band until 4:30, because the band needs to be there for the football game at 6 pm. The one good thing is that they don't have to wear their regular uniforms, just their band shirts. Next week, they have rehearsals Monday thru Wednesday nights, from 6 to 9 pm. So, you're right, Thumbgardner, it does seem to defeat the purpose of starting school after Labor Day to help with tourism. :-)

Good Morning! Had quite a storm yesterday evening, we lost power and got it back about 1am. It was a wild ride since we were driving back home from Howell (school shopping) when it hit. I don't like parts of trees flying across the road in front of me.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:09 am:

Some school, the band members wore only their band
shirts????
School activities do start early but the kids who are involved are the ones who won't be in trouble for the most part. 9 to 9 is quite the schedule.
Back in Illinois the football team and band often had to not work out during the mid day heat. Morning and then late afternoon or evening.
Amazing that people can look at a picture of Lake Superior and know where it is from hundreds of miles of shoreline. I had to look it up in the photo gallery to find the source.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:19 am:

That must have been scary, Brooke! I'm glad that you and your family were not injured by the flying debris.

We were on the edge of a severe thunderstorm warning here in Midland last night, too, by NOAA warning. And when I had just about decided that it was ok to plug my computer back in, because the thunder was only rumbling in the distance, as if the storm had gone through, a hugh clap of thunder came, ka-boom! My husband said that could still see the flash of lightning, when we heard the big thunder, so it was mighty close by. I guess that's why they have a 30-minute rule around here for high school football games. They halt the games when thunder is heard, and the games cannot be re-started for 30 minutes after the last of the thunder has been heard, as I understand it.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:26 am:

Tom, when it was really warm this week, the band changed their schedule so that the marched from 9 to 12, rehearsed their music inside from 1:30 to 4:30, and then marched again from 6:00 to 9:00. It was uncomfortable marching for them because of the humidity, but at least it wasn't in the 90's or above. :-)

Uniforms won't be distributed until Monday. So, they will have their official pep band shirts on for the game tonight. That's what all the districts seem to be doing for this really early game, two weeks before school starts.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:46 am:

Marianne, I think Tom was ribbing you a little about mentioning, "only wearing their band shirts". As a joke that was all they were wearing. :)

We were on the southside of the sever weather here in Hillsdale County. In the last two weeks we have had 10 inches in our rain gage. We are getting to the point of needing a boat ha ha.
This is the first year I have not started the high school concession stand for Pittsford High School. As I retired last spring. Our youngest graduated 9 years ago and now has a son for me to babysit.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 11:15 am:

I agree that it's ridiculous to have a law that says school doesn't start until after Labor Day. My daughter went to mandatory band camp ($200) at the end of July/beginning of August and has had marching band/color guard practice every Wednesday since then and their first game is tonight. They had orientation and pictures yesterday. Wasn't the point to not starting until after Labor Day that folks could vacation with the family and spend money to help the economy right through August??? Things that make you go "Hmmmmm....?"

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 12:56 pm:

With the start of the high school football playoffs many years ago, it caused all schools to have to play 9 games to get into the playoffs and with the extra games needed when you made the playoffs, the playoff finals are the weekend after Thanksgiving. Then the MHSAA requires so many practices before you can play a game, so it's going to bump heads with vacation time. So now two games are played before school starts.

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 04:25 pm:

Brooke, do you live north of Pinckney? I'm off McGregor at the south end of Portage Lake and we didn't lose power.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 04:45 pm:

Martha, i live right in town and the light at Dexter & 36 was out (our first clue we were doomed)all of the village was out. It was nice not having the street lights last night. My inlaws live off Farley and they had power also. So I think it was just in town.

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 06:31 pm:

I have a question for those of you in the fire dept or any who just might know. I was driving up to Eagle River yesterday and when I came to Cliff Drive I saw that half of the trees (large shrubs) in that little park there had been burned. Was this intentional or was somebody smoking or something and unintentionally started a fire?

By John W (Jwahtola) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 07:40 pm:

Well I hope everyone has survived tonights storms. They had a tornado in the Vermontville area and it just kept moving east. The storms were from Indiana to the thumb of Michigan and stronger than last nights storms. Last night the storm droped 1/10 of an inch of rain. Tonight we got 9/10s of an inch of rain here in mid Hillsdale County.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:18 pm:

Good evening from a very muggy Mishawaka, IN. After a week of rain I'm ready for the sun to come out. In our rain gauge we've had around 5 inches of rain and more is expected overnight. The football game between Mishawaka and LaPorte was postponed until tomorrow evening. LaPorte was hit harder than we were in the storms last night. We know the water is getting close to our cottage in Angola. Going there in the morning to see what needs to be done to protect things. Others have suffered worse then we have, so I am greatful.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.
