Good morning everybody! Wish we'd see some of that lightning Charlie posted on the Cam Notes page.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 07:11 am:

no...you don't want to see the lightning...it starts fires especially when its soooo dry.

Rain maybe :)

Good morning All,
I haven't posted in some time but I have been watching. Just returned from a two week visit to Northern Cali. Amazed to see the bone dry landscape. I still enjoy our landscape here. Especially da u.p. Everyone have a great weekend.

It's not as dry here anymore. I wouldn't want it to strike anything, but a lightning storm is beautiful to watch if it doesn't cause any damage.

Good Morning everyone, my first day back home from the UP and I am bummed out.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:27 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! I guess it's dumb question time. What is that white block in the hole by the tree roots?

I hope you have a good drive to the bridge today, Charlie, and I hope you have a good visit with your mom. BTW, I see that the bridge has high wind warnings on it now. My oldest son will be headed that way this noon, too, as he's coming home from Mich Tech for a week, before he has to go back to Houghton for work & the fall semester.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:31 am:

Speaking of high wind warnings on the Big Mac bridge, why do they put traffic on the outside lanes only when they have high wind warnings? I thought the purpose of the high wind warnings was to keep cars from going over/off the bridge, yet I would have thought they would be more apt to be knocked over the bridge in the outside lanes than they would from the inside lanes?

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:39 am:

Because the inner lanes' roadbed is metal grating, and when the winds blow strongly underneath it the suction is so strong it can pull a small car through one of the holes and drop it into the straits, a loooong way down. At least that is the image that comes to my mind when I drive over the bridge on windy days.

Actually I believe they place tall vehicles like semis in the upwind lane to block the wind for smaller vehicles in their lee. For southbound traffic that is usually on the outside lane. This does not always work; a friend in Petoskey was driving his car across and a semi tipped over onto it, landing on the hood and thank God missing the occupants but pretty much destroying the car.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:47 am:

The "white block" is the water.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:50 am:

Have been keeping track of, with envy, the temperatures in UP. It's predicted we will have stormy and cooler weather here soon in central Indiana.

Good Morning!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:54 am:

Marianne, that was my first impression. Then I wondered if the "white block" might actually be the water/shore seen behind, throught the hole? One of those illusions, like the word "Jesus" carved out of wood you used to see. Know what I mean?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 09:48 am:

What a site that that is.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 11:34 am:

Bobbysgirl & Mskatie, you are right. It is an optical illusion. When I change the angle of the LCD on my laptop computer, it goes from looking like a white block to realizing that you are really seeing the beach and lake through the hole in the tree roots or back to appearing like a white block! That is really interesting! (I have also noticed that the appearance of pictures seems to change from morning, through the day to night, depending on ambient lighting in this room, including the amount and direction of the light coming through the windows). Thank you for pointing out what it really is. :-)

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 05:22 pm:

I want some of what you guys are having! lol

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 06:18 pm:

Nope no back button here. I "X" out and went to MySpace page to see what message my son left for me. Read the Email I recieved from PastyCam from my posting and hit my Link on my AOL.com space bar, and Paul's and mine were gone. That was at 0630 so I sent another "Good Morning" The reason I know what time Paul entered his was I glanced at my internet clock and saw that I missed the Early bird by 2 minutes. I did see he had the Early bird blue sticker, too. Oh well, "No Worries" I guess it just happens and there is truely no reason for the mystery. I am just glad the site is up and running after the Repeat of August 13th...... Only good thing that came out of that was Uncle Chuck had two birthdays in a row :-P

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 08:49 pm:

The white thing is a hole in the trunk/root and showing the beach on the underside of it. With the water on shore you can see it through that hole in the tree.

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 10:27 pm:

Looks like a big sugar lump for the gnomes who are hiding behind the tree

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 10:40 pm:

The natural bridge is not a tree root but rather a rock formation.

A very enjoyable ride to the eastern U.P. today (and back). We saw some of the smoke near Newberry, but didn't get close enough to see any of the burn area.
