Tom Cook visited a frog in its U. P. habitat recently and came away from the encounter with a couple of good shots. I like the way the water changes the color of the critter or maybe the bright green color is just concentrated on his head. No matter his coloring, it's always a pleasure to hear their serenade of croaks in the evening. It's like they're singing with abandon, once the sun goes down. I have to admit, I really don't know a whole lot about frogs... in fact I'm wondering now if it's an old wives tale or if it's true, that you can get warts from handling frogs?

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 06:53 am:

The old adage was "You will get warts from handleing Toads" I believe because they had a wart-like skin. Either way I handled both as a child and never got any. LOL, but I did get "wet" a lot from them expelling their liquid when trying to frighten me away. (I didn't wanna get censored by saying the other word for wet :)I have a few ceramic frogs in my kitchen that are his color green. I certainly have a love of frogs and turtles that all comes from my childhood on Lake Superior.

Morning! I was always told you get warts from handling toads.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:06 am:

I also was told you would get warts from handling toads. I have never had a wart.
I used to have a pet frog named Hopalong Cassidy. I made a place for him outside in a large tub. I put a rock under it to raise up one end, put water on one end and some sand and pulled some grass for the other end. I don't think he appreciated it, because he hopped away.

I just want to add that this wasn't recently. :)
Maybe when I was about 8. But I still like frogs.

By Donald R. Elzinga (Donagain) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 08:27 am:

Our recent hail storm in Marquette killed the frogs in our pond. Two very small ones appeared again yesterday. Because 3/4s of the oak leaves are down the pond gets much more sun so it is covered in duck weed for the first time ever. Raking leaves this fall is going to be much easier. Almost all of the homes in my neighborhood have had their shingles replaced due to the hail damage.

Great pictures Tom! How did you get the frog to sit still long enough to snap the photos?

My older sister used to pick up frogs and toads and kiss them hoping they would turn into princes. She never got warts on her hands but she had a big one on her nose. The wart kind of fit her character as she also rode a broom. I think she used toads in some of the potions she used to make too.

The frog's eye looks like a brooch one of the mining baron's wives would have worn: worked gold around an onyz.

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 09:23 am:

These pics remind me of catching polliwogs in the ponds by some of the old mine rock piles, particularly the one in Allouez. It was fun to watch them transform themselves into frogs. Ah to be a kid again!!!

Dave,
I am sure glad I am not your sister, Tee Hee!!

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 09:27 am:

Didn't even notice the eye brooch....I thought it looked like the frog had a really old penny tucked in just above his leg......

It looks like it will be a beautiful day today..gotta go check out the 2 day sale at Louies this morning.....you all have a great day.

Hey Blue eyes sure hope there is enough Meat for this sale.....I was handing out flyer's all last night.....God Bless

If toads do cause warts it would be because they carry the papilloma virus that causes warts. Haven't heard whether this is true or not, but my Mom said she use to get warts on her hands after handling toads way back in the dark ages when she was a kid.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 10:01 am:

Naw..you don't get warts from toads, sillies! And "shutterbug" you are the reason why I'm glad I never had a brother. Although sometimes I would have liked to have one to stick up for me. I always wonder what the differences in the looks of toads and frogs. And there's nothing like the sound of evening around a campfire when the frogs are active. Makes camping all the more pleasant!

Cindy what an interesting site! Loved it. The more we know about a subject the more we get to know the world around us. THANK YOU! I never could understand how people could eat frogs' legs. But this is from one who couldn't catch fish. I put myself in their place and hurt just thinking of harming a creature of God. NO don't yell at me, that's just me! :o)

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 12:55 pm:

Kay that reminds me about an incident with my younger brother Raphael who is allergic to fish. He was visiting me when he was 14 and I convinced him to sample the fried frog legs I had gaffed the previous day telling him they were amphibians and not fish, so they should be O.K. Lo, and behold, his eyes and face swelled up so bad he looked like Peter Lorre. He ran around the local A&P store talking like he was a character from the movie "The Maltese Falcon". He still reminds me of that day and he's 46 this year.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 01:45 pm:

Kay -- I feel bad too, but not bad enough to not eat fish occasionally. When I have gone bass fishing we always throw them back. I have never tried frog legs. I do apologize to bugs and spiders when I kill them in my house and I am very upset when I see critters dead on the road. I ran over a bunny once and was very sad. I tried to avoid it, but they run in zig-zag and it was impossible to miss.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 02:06 pm:

Cindy I hear you. Don't mean to ask for sympathy from anyone, but 30 years ago I can still see it, I hit a bunny on my way to work the first day after loosing a family member! It almost tore me apart. Sorry didn't mean to upset anyone. I just happend and I still remember it! God bless us all.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 03:15 pm:

I like the little taods, we caught one up north but my son set it free so the cat wouldn't eat it. He was only 1/4" long it was so cute.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 03:52 pm:

A month ago I noted in my journal that this is The Year of the Toad for us on the Lake Michigan shoreline. We've never seen so many. Wondered why and did a little research. The Fowlers Toads that inhabit our sandy dune woodlands prefer to hang out in moist soil. It's been so dry this summer that the little pockets of moisture in the woods have dried up. So they're moving toward the water.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 06:22 pm:

An evening by the campfire, listening to frogs would be pleasant. But, listening to bullfrogs all night long after a heavy rain can mean no sleep, which might not be so pleasant. [When we lived in Texas, our home was near woods that would get swampy when there were heavy rains, so we endured a number of nights like that.] :-(
RIBBIT !!!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:10 pm:

I've always liked frogs and toads. When I was but a young thing, I harvested a gallon jug of tadpoles and put them in my sister's swimming pool. Was quite the joke for a 15 year old to play on a 4 year old. But teens and toddlers don't always cohabitate well. I have a calendar that has a different frog/toad on it every day. The prettiest colored ones always appear to be the poisoneous ones. What a shame. My latest fav is a Mexican dumpy toad.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 08:21 pm:

Okay, I don't apologize to bugs and spiders when I smack them (they don't apologize to me when they bite me either), and I don't throw bass back unless they're too big to taste good. However, I DO avoid all critters on the roads. I will swerve to miss them. Does that count? We bought a shirt for Mr. Deb at Copper World (or whatever it's called) that says "fillet and release". That's us in a nutshell. (Well, that's me anyway.)
