When storms start brewing over the open waters of Lake Superior, you never know what you're going to see. Fortunately for us, Paul Roberts is somewhat of an amateur storm chaser and snapped these shots during a recent storm event in the Keweenaw, like the one last night. Sure is a spectacular shot of the storm cloud curving out over the Big Lake. Then it looks like Paul raced up on top of Brockway Mountain to capture the storm rolling in over the land. Finally the storm subsided and Paul was back down below in time to get a photo of the double rainbow the storm left behind to make up for the dousing it rained down. The forces and beauty of Mother Nature at work in the Keweenaw. Does it get any better than this?

Truely awesome pictures!

Reminds me of sitting in our living room in Eagle River watching the storms come across the lake from Canada, in both summer and winter. We use to try to guess how long the storm would take to get to the shoreline. The free show was great while we waited.

I love watching storms. My old place had a big bay window in the kitchen that faced SW it was great for watching them come in.

Those are super pictures, Paul R! I don't remember seeing a front come in like that, that is so well-defined! I like that rainbow, too.

It looks like that front brought you all UP there some nice cooler temps! I hope we can get back down to low 80's here, soon, too!

The first pic may be a "Beaver Tail" cloud. That is an inflow to a severe thunderstorm. Pretty rare in the UP..

I dont want to rain on the parade but in the DETROIT FREE PRESS editorial of today Aug 2, 2007 the last sentence says that the next appropriation bill for Great Lakes fresh water funds for dredging, barrier against Asian Carp, new lock at the Sault Canal, controlling sewage overflows etc. may have a authorization there for a pipeline to send water to "water starved" western states....not a good item if we already look at the low water levels on the great lakes.

The first two look alot like the storms that rolled in last night. Lightining was pretty powerful last night, along with the thunder!
It was amazing, just to get the rain we needed so much. We need still more yet!

The pictures are wonderful....they tell a story and no words are needed.

Just like the government.....wanting to destroy the big lake.........Why can't they do something with the oceans.....arn't they closer to the dry western states...????

I would love to have a big window and see the storms come off of Lake superior! Where I'm at, can hardly see whats coming until its on us! Too high trees close by i guess. The rainbow promise is always there too, after the storm hey? Great pic's!

Asian Carp are only 30-40 miles from entering Lake Michigan via the Illinois River, Chicago River route. There is an electric barrier in the river which is supposed to keep them at bay. Besides their negative environmental impact, they have become quite the hazard on the Illinois River due to their propensity to jump when disturbed by passing boats. One water skier was nearly killed near Peoria when a 40 pounder jumped up and knocked her out. Since the Barrier is a Government project, I don't hold much hope for the Great Lakes.
The pipeline to the West has been in the wings for many years. Now with the extreme droughts and influx of fools that thought moving to a desert was good idea, I suspect there will be a hard push to see that those people get the water they feel they are entitled to. It will take a concerted effort by Great Lakes States and Provinces to resist draining the Lakes. Start you lobbies and protests NOW!

So how do we go about with lobbies and protests? Where do we start? I think that pasty.com would be a good a place as any but I know there has got to be more then just posting on a message board.

Sure would like to see some storms like that down in The IRon Mountain/Norway area. We are having a big time drought!

you need to get support from your congressmen...and also your state officials. Write to them..a write in campaign. You need to find someone in high office that will talk about this a lot...publicity is key.

Remember, your state will be getting revenue from this deal, so it may appear like a great deal to a lot of people that don't have the mental agility to think beyond the next 10 years.

The internet is a great place for popular uprisings. Start a website. state your case. canvas for support. send out fliers. Get people to think about it, the ramifications of the water loss.

FIND A CELEBRITY ... a quick way to get publicity.

That first shot looks very intimidating. I have posted a link as not to detract from these great shots in the Whats Up section of some storm footage caught by Captain Eric Treece while he was on the Wilfred Sykes.

We really need rain here in Hillsdale County but not the storms that rain real hard for 5 mintures and leave. The storm picture are AWESOME.

Asian Carp; or any Carp in small rivers ought to be shot! If you have property or home with a creak
river,and Carp are swiming by,it is your duty to shoot some.But this is how you do it safe! Use a stump or tree-stand close to water.Stand or sit secured,fastened.Use your Bow with a special arrow attached to a very good fishing Reel.So when you get your kill shot,you can retrive the arrow,and despose of Carp properly.Or it will smell,stink, like Crap.Use a test pound fishing line of your choice.They have super eye sight so where Camo and stay in shade.Have the strong kids fish from shore using corn for bait.

I like that double rainbow. It's one of HIS promises, you know.
