This young man is what you might call a "serious" rock collector, having found himself a good size sandstone rock to pose with, for today's photographer, Jeremy TePaske. No matter if you're looking for rocks at Brunette Park, outside of Gay or along the shores of Lake Superior, near the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon, you'll find rocks of every shape and size. Jeremy's second photo with the same youngster posing as Ruler extraordinaire of the Big Lake, is a perfect example of how this Great Lake makes you feel... Superior!

How true, Mary. I've had my kids ask to take home rocks that size
and my husband still wants to do that. Come to think of it, I've
lugged some pretty big ones home myself. There's something
about the Big Lake.

and the Lake soon replaces the rocks we take away!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 08:17 am:

Lucky little guy!

By Jane (Yooperski) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 10:10 am:

Maybe that's why the Lake is down!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 10:40 am:

It was in 1969 when man first landed on the moon. When they returned safely to earth, they brought back a few moon rocks. We were watching it live on TV. My old uncle remarked, well, you will never see a full moon again.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 11:34 am:

My son always throws them in, doesn't collect them. Its usually piles of sand he brings home instead.

A "serious" rock collector would be one that loads a pickup truck to the point of overloading the springs...... not that I would know anyone who has done this!!!

By JohnS (Jksturos) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 12:25 pm:

I hear ya, Brooke!

I picked up a rock from around Jacobsville when I was nine and have taken it around the world with me. It now is sitting under one of the trees in the side yard. It has had a place of honor every where we have lived. I envy the people who have their houses or their foundations made of sandstone.

By Jeremy (Jst) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 03:21 pm:

He sure was excited to take it home. Loves to show and tell everyone about the cool rocks he brought home. This particular one now occupies a spot in one of our gardens.
->Capt.Paul: Our boys may well be "serious" rock collectors but mom and dad have to set a limit, no overloaded springs!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 03:23 pm:

Our house in Red Jacket had a foundation made of sandstone and C&H Conglomerate, as did most of the homes in the neighborhood. There was even a couple spots where copper was sticking out of the foundation. The pieces on the inside I kept shined up for visitors to look at; made for some interesting conversations......

I was reading every-one's comments and looking at the "serious" rock collector once more, when it dawned on me that the rock he's holding would have made an excellent skipping rock!! That is, providing it wasn't too big to hold and start off skimming Lake Superior's waters! :->

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 04:18 pm:

Rock picking is a family tradition. Mom used to get upset when dad would keep bringing home rocks esp. when they lived in White Pine. I kept a jar of The Lake's rocks in a decorative glass container on my kitchen window sill. And son #1 wanted to become a geologist. And still takes off occasionaly to work those places in Missouri or Arkansa for a couple days. Always expected the house to collapse with all his geoades etc.!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 04:24 pm:

I have a rock from our driveway. It is a piece of mine rock and is very sharp. I used to walk on our driveway in my bare feet all the time when I was a kid, back in the olden days. But I can't do it any more. I took one little rock to remind me of where I am from.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 04:33 pm:

From reading your comments, Cindy, I doubt you need anything to
remind you of where you are from...but I'm glad you have your
rock.

Well there you have it, I do believe that young man has found none other than Paul Bunyan's skipping rock!

We were rock and driftwood hunting on the south side after the parade at Gay and my wife found a few rocks to bring home. Problem was....couple were too big to put in a small aircraft...so choices were made.......along with a lot of whining.......Thanks again Neil Harri for the warm welcome at KCMX....The lady at the Laurium Inn told me she had a couple who spent a week at lots of worldwide locations scouting the areas and that of all the places they had visited.....the people in the UP ranked number 1...and I believe it............Great 4th
