Ashley Byykkonen was out for a drive with her folks on an overcast day, camera in tow and stopped to check out several geese on the beach. That curve looks to be M-26 around Cat Harbor, as you make your way north to the tip of the Keweenaw. The geese don't seem to be bothered by Ashley clicking away, but that long-necked one in particular seems to be staking out its territory from the other geese! All that aggression was easily forgotten a little while later, as the second shot shows them serenely paddling along, a trio of feathered friends.

My imagination or is the one on the right decorated for Christmas?

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 06:57 am:

He looks to be banded for tracking.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 07:38 am:

They're so beautiful, but they leave such a mess.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 08:01 am:

They winter down here--like it so much many do not leave. Our Medi-Park is loaded.

By William J Mullen (Billmullen) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 08:37 am:

Ducks and geese are usually banded with a metal tag on a leg. That looks more like a plastic bag around the neck that that goose stuck its head into long ago.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 08:59 am:

Ashley actually has a better shot of the goose in question and you can see that the green "Christmas" decoration is indeed a band for tracking....

Goosey Loosey

They are permanent residents here now and a horrible nuisance. Such a shame because they are so beautiful. They are voracious grass-eaters........and what goes in, goes out!

When Mary labeled the picture Goose Stepping, I immediately thought of me trying to walk around and over the obvious results of the geese being in residence. No such thing as barefoot walking in the sand anymore at Cat Harbor.

My father in law had raised two or three of some geese out at the camp. They followed him around like he was the Pied Piper. But whenever I walked around the yard, thy'd be hollering, honking chasing me back into the camp. It wasn't funny at the time but now I look back at it, & I must have looked funny running from geese with them right at my butt.

The Canadian geese stay in Central Indiana all year round, too. They love all the ponds in the subdivisions and some grassy areas at malls. When they are nesting, especially at the malls, you know to give them a wide berth!

At one middle school here, the geese love a big grassy area where the students do laps for P.E.
Yucky!

While looking out my window, I saw a wondrous sight. I never get
tired of it ...

Goose stepping maybe writing love letters in the sand.

Thanks Jacobsville Barb. I would never tire of that sight either.

Looks like quite a few nice shots today, I saw a fawn outside Eagle River the other day but it ran away before I could get the camera. The car spooked it.

I'm with Barb...love the sight of a doe and her fawn! We currently have a doe with twin fawns residing in our pasture until the fawns can jump the fence, then they will probably move on. They have been a lot of fun to watch!

honk if you like geese

By Heikki (Heikki) on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 09:53 pm:

I had an uncle that raised geese. He also never outgrew his love for bubble gum. It was common to see him chompin' on a large wad. While feeding the geese one day, he shouted at one to move, and the wad of gum fell out of his mouth. He searched for it and said he thought he had found it three times!
