Eight years ago - the original pasty camist Jonathan Hopper, and our dog Casey in the water. I think he must have been experimenting with a tripod and delayed shutter that day.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 08:27 am:

Good morning! Since it's the weekend and we have plans for boating, I suppose it'll rain again. It's really been hot!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 08:28 am:

Good Morning, you all!

My MTU son was complaining last night about how hot it was UP there for the Bridge Fest parade, and that the dorms aren't air conditioned. I see that the high temp UP there today is supposed to be a much cooler 74, and that it's supposed to remain cool UP there at least through next Friday!

On the other hand, it's our turn for the heat today, with a predicted high of 88. They've underestimated the forecasted high temps for here for at least the last 4 days in a row - maybe they can get it right one of these days? The good thing about the heat is that will warm up the lake water faster. :-)

Happy Saturday! Have a good day, you all!

By NKR (Nkr) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 08:44 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. 70° here this morning on it's way up to 90°. Have a nice day everyone.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 08:50 am:

I'm back from my first, glorious UP trip of 2007. Had the usual great trip, saw the sights, ate the food, and made plans for our bean soup at the Aura Jamboree in July. Our car totally died in our driveway in Aura, ending our plans for a moose search Thursday night. Range Auto had to tow the car in, leaving us stranded. Our thanks to them for giving it a temporary fix so we could be home today, and at a reasonable rate! We have to be in Lansing at 1:00 today to make popcorn in our open kettle at the senior citizens' apt. where our oldest daughter works. Otherwise, we could have just stayed stranded and had it totally fixed Monday. We did the Ambassador tostada pizza thing Tuesday, and the Harbor Haus Wednesday. Saw an extremely long freighter from the restaurant and want to find out which one it was. So anyway, with our car disabled we were forced to slow down and relax on our much deeper beach!

I just skimmed the week's pastycam notes and was saddeded to read Elizabeth's post of, I think, Tuesday telling of the loss of her brother in that accident on the Seney Stretch.

Now I have to get it together and make some cookie bars for the Father's Day picnic at 5:00 at our church. Busy day!

Good Morning. It's going to be another hot, steamy day in central Indiana.

By allen philley (Allen) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 09:20 am:

What is this Tostada pizza? I ckd their web site hoping to find a picture and description. I have been to the Ambassador about 10 yrs ago but we had Lasagna.

Congratulations to Sharon Smith on the sale of her family home in Detroit. It must be rather wrenching to be totally free of that obligation but too a big loss of her heritage. Now youll be 100% yooper! :) Must add I'm totally engrossed in your saga about the new kitty. I so enjoy each new entry in the story. My regards to Buster, as I'm at a loss without my own cats in my life.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 10:42 am:

Mskatie - Thanks very much for your kind words. It is a wrench, but it has to be done. As for the kitties, I am concerned about leaving them for a month or 6 weeks, and I certainly hope the new kitty doesn't bond to the cat sitter! Moving is one of my least favorite occupations, and I'll be glad when it's over and the last of my "stuff" is at home in the field!

Marsha,

Thanks for the update on your trip and adventures. I'm glad you
had such a wonderful time.

Boy, a couple of years ago and that picture would have been my daughter and her dog Valentine. They both loved the beach. Valentine is gone now, but I suspect, every now and then she's on a beach or snow pile somewhere.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 11:20 am:

I'm curious to know whether there are ever incidents/problems with freighters on the Portage? There have been a couple of incidents near here in the Bay City/Saginaw area in recent years. If I remember correctly, the one in Saginaw Bay was a big-ish freighter that apparently came loose from one of its moorings while it was unloading liquid fuel at Bay City, on Saginaw Bay. That one caused big problems for a few days until they got it fixed & the spillage cleaned up. It required fire depts, environmental officials, and the list goes on to help make it safe for everyone again.

The second incident was an ore boat, or something similar, that ran aground in the Saginaw River as they missed the narrow channel a little bit. That took some tugs to pull it off, but wasn't as big a problem. That one pointed out the need to dredge the river again very soon.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 11:32 am:

Good Morning, glad too see I'm not the only crazy one who was up early today. Except I cleaned the house before it got hot instead of getting on the computer (laundry at 7am)! Everyone have a great weekend.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 11:35 am:

There is a roll of fog over Sharon's web cam right now. Totally awesome looking. Rained here this morning in Ontonagon, clearning up now.
Have a great Saturday everyone. I am off to work!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 11:46 am:

Brooke, that was a good idea to get up early to do your housework & laundry before it gets hotter! Now that you have it done, you can go off & do something fun for the day, if you want to!

By Judy Kinnunen (Finngal) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 12:13 pm:

allen, Ambassador Tostada pizza is similar to a taco pizza, made on a thin crust with beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and a sweet red tomato sauce. Wish I had one now...

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 02:33 pm:

Happy..in the UP. I've been meaning to contact you for a while. My folks lived in White Pine from '79 thru I believe '82 And their best friends were a Doris and Howard somebody. Maybe something common like "Nelson"? Not sure. Just wondering if you may have known them. I understand they moved maybe to a retirement home in Ontonogan where I think he passed. Any chance you may have know them. Very nice folks, mom & dad's Bingo buddies.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 03:12 pm:

I am so happy! I have been watching Mich Tech's Fund motion web cam (of the Lift Bridge) this afternoon, hoping to see the Bridge Fest's water skiing show. I did not get to see that, as it was out of reach of this web cam.

What I did get to see, though, was the boat returning from Isle Royale, with the Lift Bridge opening & closing to let it through, etc. I watched it go down, out of the web cam's range, apparently turn around, and coming back and docking. That was awesome!

I had seen the Isle Royale boat leave Houghton in person, when I happened to be close enough to watch the whole thing, with the bridge going up, etc. I had always hoped to see it return. I saw it on a motion web cam, instead of in person. :-)

I really like Mich Tech's motion web cams, where you can watch traffic on US-41, see various buildings on campus, tell what the weather is (wind, precip, snow, etc). Thank you, MTU for your motion web cams!

Tostada pizza is a "must have" when I'm back home along with pasty, Mackinac Island Fudge icecream, Trenary Toast and Baroni's Ravioli with their sauce. Give it a try next time you are there, you'll love it! If it happens to be a holiday and my Grandma makes her potato sausage we all fight over it, yummy! She makes the best brownies too.

Does anyone else have any "must haves" when they go to the U.P?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 03:34 pm:

Connie, there used to be a small mall-type of structure up in Copper Harbor. We bought the very best maple fudge there. They made their maple fudge with real maple syrup, unlike their competitors, who just used imitation maple flavoring. Their maple fudge was addicting! I don't know if they are still there, but if they are, I highly recommend it! I also love the Harbor Haus!

We are going up to Houghton on Thursday, but we will only be UP there a couple of days, so that will really limit then number of places on my list of favorite places to visit, eat, etc, that we can visit on this trip. I do wish we could stay longer, but my youngest son has to get back home for a band rehearsal (city band) on Monday. (He has rehearsals on Monday & concerts on Wednesdays, thru July; he can't miss since it is a job, and he is paid a little bit for each rehearsal & performance.)

A permanent job so the Dr. and I wouldn't have to return to Houston would be nice.... ;-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 07:58 pm:

Daveofmohawk--I don't have any idea from whom you received your numbers. I really wish they were correct! We were both off some, according to MTU reports, none of which shows state income at a number as high as even 50%.

In June 2006, they projected state income of hopefully $49 million, on a budget estimated at $112.3 million, which I calculate to be 43.75% income from the state. Note the hedging here: the state always gives MTU lower numbers than MTU expected, at least in the 4 years, soon to be 5 that my son has been a student there.
http://www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/news/media_relations/496/

MTU reported numbers to the State Senate of a total budget at $107 million, of which only $49 million came from the state, in April, 2005. Note: I gave you the newer data first.
http://www.sas.it.mtu.edu/usenate/minute/05/425m.htm

You can see the downward trend in percentage of state aid to MTU's total budget there, based on official numbers reported by MTU, show state aid has not even equaled tuition income for some years, much less being the higher percentage that you came up with. State aid has dropped even more as a percentage of MTU's budget since then, & it is scheduled to drop even more this year, from what I've read in the papers.

Sadly, the biggest drops have come since the latest data that I have, but I do not have access to later info. The Detroit Free Press or Detroit News reported that the biggest budget cuts of all in the current & next state budgets are now in higher education. They also reported that the big 3 schools, U of M, MSU, & Wayne state will be hurt significantly less by the state aid cuts than the rest of the state schools. This info was reported in both the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News within the last month.

The numbers that I originally quoted came from my son, a MTU student, apparently based on what the university told the students. I know that Mroz (MTU Pres) sent email messages to all of the students & as many parents as they had email addresses for (including me), begging people to contact their state representatives and state senators to stop this big loss of state aid to higher education, but the message was sent only a couple of days before the hearing, so there was not time to respond. I believe that message was sent out in late April this year. Believe me, those state aid cuts will be steep.

Dave, either your conversation with your unnamed person was quite a bit longer ago in time than you remembered it to be, or the person that you spoke with did not have access to info that was current, as state aid is dropping precipitously now.

When I visit the UP I have to stop at the roadside park between Munising and Marquette and sit on the beach for while. It recharges me. It's the one that's down a little hill. I just love it there. It's a must for me.
