Among my favorite things this time of year are the wildflowers that sprout up everywhere, like these two samples from Ashley Byykkonen. Lily of the Valley is such a unique looking flower, always reminding me of little bells, ready to ring if shook. Not to mention the sweet scent you notice when you're nearby a patch of these little beauties. As for the second shot, I'm not certain that these little daisy-like flowers are actually called daisies, but no matter, they're still pretty and it looks like the insect feasting on them doesn't care either. Even in the summer, we can enjoy something white from the U.P! :->

Besides the wonderful fragrance the lily of the Valley brings fond memories as I had them on my veil when I made my First Communion wayyyyyyyy back.

This year some of the garden centers here had pink colored Lily of the Valley available, something
new to offer. Butterflies and Humming birds love our yard, I have our yard decorated in wildflowers and ornamental grassses, all transplanted from our meadow. I'm now waiting on the Blue Cardinal plants to start blooming to transplant.

Good Morning! I am in my 3rd week in the UP. Now I know what the lovely carpet in my back yard is - the little daisies! Most of the flowers I am acquainted with from Ohio and North Carolina, but there are some that are new to me. So far I have spent my time unpacking and settling in. Now I am job hunting. I have enjoyed the Spring Arts and Music Festival one weekend and, last weekend, Bridgefest/Seafoodfest. Now I need to start wandering farther a-field. I need someone to show me the sights of the UP!

Hummingbirds lo-o-ve bee balm (Monarda), especially the red blooms. But it is invasive.

Some folks have all the luck. Thanks for the pictures this morning--too hot down here for them. Good luck Jeanette, you'll have a good time exploring. And on those colder fall nights, just look at the archives of Pasty Pix.

I love wildflowers, they are safe since I don't take care of them!

Our Lily's of the Valley are long gone in the Chicago land area so the picture this morning was a delight. They are also my favorite flower. My Great Aunt Elsie used to pick them and put them in a green vase in the dinning room. They made the whole downstairs seem so sweet.

The Lily of the Valley was one of my moms favorite flowers, she would pick them every spring along with lilacs. Would make the house smell nice.

You are right, Mary. The second flower is the DAISY Fleabane. It was once believed that this flower repelled fleas. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12146_12213-36292--,00.html

My gram's home in Laurium was surrounded by Lily of the Valley. Mom had them in her bridal bouquet. I have them in one small section of my yard. And they are a border around the back of my work place where the picnic table sits. Wonder if they are supposed to be special to me?

Forgot: Today would have been my parent's 60th wedding anniversary speaking of lilies of the valley in her bouquet...

By Susan Lahti (Finn_in_texas) on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - 11:05 am:

I did a little research (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_of_the_valley) and discovered that the Lily of the Valley became Finland's national flower in 1982. And, according to legend, the flower is also known as Our Lady's tears, since the tears Mary shed at the cross turned to Lilies of the Vally.

My mother also had lilies of the valley in her bridal bouquet, so we made sure the centerpiece at the head table of their 50th anniversary celebration had them as well.

My Lily of the Valley bloom in early spring here in N Ga. I brought my first ones down here from my sisters yard in Dollar Bay.They were there when they bought the house a long time ago. It formerly berlonged to Mrs St John who was most of Dollar Bay's kindegarten teacher. So they are old!I just love the smell when they are in bloom.

By Carole (Carole) on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - 07:29 pm:

MsKatie.....I remember having cloth lillies of the valley on the ribbon sash of my communion dress. My mother tied a bow around the flowers. That also was waaaaaaaaaaay back when.
