The metals-artist who made this statue in Dollar Bay passed away not long ago. He used to run a copper specialty business out of an old church on Sixth Street in Calumet. What was his name, and the name of his business?

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 06:13 am:

Was his first name Dan?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 06:59 am:

Speaking of Dans, I still think of and miss Dan Urbanski and his
beautiful photographs of the UP. Did his wife Patti (I think?) remain
in the UP or was it just too hard to stay once he was no longer
there?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 07:03 am:

By Alicia Marshall (Aliciak) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 08:20 am:

Hi
Was it the famous Jack Anderson who created the
Bishop Baraga statue?

By dan belo (Djbelo) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 08:34 am:

DAN GWAARA. A GOOD MUSICIAN TOO. DIDN'T DENNIS LAHIKAINEN WORK ON THE SCULPTURE PART?

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 09:22 am:

Dennis was extremely talented, and even designed area homes. He was also one of the founding fathers of the annual $ Bay fete over the fourth of July.

Wasn't that bronze of a miner just as you enter Houghton, also done by Dennis?

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 09:38 am:

I think it was the Jack Anderson who did the Biship Baraga Statue. He had a studio in Lake Linden many years ago----in the 1960s---on the way to Bootjack but in LL. I remember visiting his studio when the Bishop statue was being made. Very talented and also his crew.

His name was Dennis Lahikainen. He was a Dollar Bay resident that I went to school with. He was quite an artist.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 03:21 pm:

Some of Denny's art work will be on display at the school over the 4th weekend. Denny died while working on the Memorial to the Dollar Bay Veterans across from the P.O.

Speaking of the name Helen. When I was a young man working at Burroughs in Plymouth, MI.in the Tool Crib was a sign that read," If you have any complaints go to Helen Wate." Like a fool I asked to see her.
