eeeeeeeuuuuuwwwwwwww! What a way to kick back from finals coming up.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 09:32 am:

Wow! I doubt you'll be able to SHOUT! that mud out. Much cheaper than a day at the spa though.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 09:42 am:

What do you mean kicking back, this IS finals!! Those students are checking the porosity/permeability of the soils near Walker Hall. The items with the white borders and posts are sieve nets to check the particle size of the individual grains. The lady with the white ball is about to test for the "splat" test to see how far an object will sink into the dampened soil. The ladder in the back is used by the professor to make sure no one is cheating. And the vehicles in the back are used to pull out the unlucky ones who get in over their head during the test......

Judging from this photo, it's no wonder why there's a sign in the MUB that reads "through these halls pass the finest engineers on earth".

I'm also wondering about the fire down by Covington. Can anyone reproduce a map circling the burnt area?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 10:15 am:

LOL, Capt. Paul. I love the way you managed to work geology into a good ole game of mud volleyball!

That might have been finals week 8 years ago, but finals this year were last week, and grades are to be posted around 5:00 pm today. Summer school starts a week from tomorrow. :-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 10:26 am:

Mikie, I misses your post on spring allergies. I hope you feel better soon! My three sons (my MTU son is home for a week before going back on Friday, to work & summer school), and I have our spring allergies flaring. When my oldest son started compaining about his eyes itching, I teased him that this year, he gets an extra week of spring allergies, because he has them now, and he'll get them again when he goes back up to Copper Country. (He's mainly allergic to trees and grasses.) At first he was non-plussed, but he then said that he is happy have our really nice weather & to see the trees blossoming, etc. Welcome spring, finally!

I am considering renting my cottage out to people I know (and trust). No, this is not a sales pitch! It is on the eastern shore of Keweenaw Bay (Aura) looking across to the Keweenaw. The shore is rocky, not a beach, but you can go in the water there. It is central to waterfalls, etc. The cottage is very cute, 2 bedroom, with all the amenities. Here's the big question: How much should I rent it for by the week?

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 01:19 pm:

You may not be aware of it, but there are a lot of Finns out here in northwest Oregon. I read this in the weekly paper this morning, and thought I would share it.

"Wilho Saari Kantele program. May 6, 3 p.m. Wilho Sarri of Naselle was recognized with a 2005 Governor's Heritage award for playing and teaching others to play this Finnish national instirment, similer to a zither."

Well, that explains that. So not only do I not know what a Kantele is, I don't know what a zither is either. Can any of my Finnish friends back home educate me here?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 02:23 pm:

A kantele is a small harp looking instrument with a back. A little shop in Duluth builds them; below is the web address...

http://www.kantele.com/

A zither is also a small harp looking instrument used in Germany and the Alps region of Europe. Both are used in traditional folk music of their respective regions.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 02:46 pm:

I have a zither at my house! OK, it's a toy one, called Zippy Zither. You slide the paper music under the strings and pluck it as the paper notes (notes?).

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Capt. have you ever heard of a swinette?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 03:04 pm:

… there are a lot of Finns out here in northwest Oregon.

Oh yes, there's quite a large Finnish community on both sides of the Columbia River, in northwestern Oregon (Astoria, Clatsop County) and southwestern Washington (Pacific County). I'd really like to get there some day!

FinnFest USA 2006 was held in both Astoria, OR and rural Naselle, WA.

Apparently Duluth, MN will be the host city for FinnFest 2008.

There may (or may not) be some other Finnish-American Folk Festival in 2008) in
Naselle, WA (?)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 03:12 pm:

Hello everyone.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 04:08 pm:

I'll bite, is a swinette an itty bitty pig??

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 04:26 pm:

My grandfather used to play what looked like a zither for us when we were kids. He would serve us warm Frosty root beer and those pink mint candies or butterscotch candies that he had in his wool pants pocket all year. He also played the accordian for us; the kind with rows and rows of buttons. It was so beautiful. The music was just like the stuff that played on Suomi Kuutsu (sp?). He didn't speak any English and we didn't speak any Finnish, but we always had a great time.

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 04:32 pm:

And FinnFest 2007 will be in Ashtabula, OH.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 08:57 pm:

All I know about a swinette is a piece of hair and a pigs backside (and frankly, that's all I want to know!! ;-)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 09:27 pm:

Give the capt a cigar he left out using his teeth to pluck the hair.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - 11:33 pm:

Cindy Pihjala Russell, your spelling isn't that far off. It's spelled SUOMI KUTSUU. Your extra 'U' is just in the wrong place. Carl Pellonpää is the host and has been for the last 45 years!
