Anytime you have warmer temperatures in the Marquette area, the college crowd heads out to the lakeshore around Presque Isle to do a little cliff diving or in this case, jumping! Aladino Mandoli was there recently to do some snapping. This first young man has quite the form with his take-off, spin and smooth entry into cold Lake Superior. The second jumper readies himself, building up the courage to take the plunge and by the look on his face as he enters the water, I'd say the Big Lake was mighty cold that day! Ahh... to be young and foolish, but of course if you're young, you wouldn't think this was foolish!

Insanity comes to mind!!!!!!!! BRRRRR!!!!!!!!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 07:40 am:

That man in the third photo looks wet, but then he's mostly dry in the fourth? From his tatoo I'd say he likes horsing around, too. Either way I know I'd still be dry!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 08:07 am:

I will give the diver a "7", he needs to work on his form.

I had to do that same backwards-twist stunt when I was on the gymnastic team in the 10th grade on the trampoline. It required a lot of heighth, it was a fun stunt!

Hi
I'm a cold water swimmer, but that'd be too tough for me! I remember going to Porcupine Mountain State Park as a kid. There were some sun-warmed rocks extending out into deeper water. My brother & I would jump in, swim frantically, get back out & spread ourselves on the rocks like basking lizards.

Wish I was there to join'em!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 10:54 am:

I have always enjoyed wandering Presque Isle. One of my favourite memories is this:

I took a group of students to the Marquette area a few years back. It was the beginning of June and an incredibly hot day. We were all wearing just shorts and t-shirts or tank tops and still roasting. Many students complained it was too hot and wished it would cool off.

And in the distance there were clouds...

We were looking at the rocks on Presque Isle when those clouds arrived and with them a cold wind. The temperature plummeted like the stock market in 1929. Snow began falling and there we were, in shorts and tank tops, looking at the rocks in the falling snow. And the students complained it was too cold.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 11:07 am:

Dr Nat,
I believe you have the start of a mystery novel there. You just need to work a dog barking in the distance into your story!

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 11:19 am:

Done that a few times..........now it's time to bite the head off a smelt.....got my reservations for the 4th of July......Americana at it's CC best...

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 11:44 am:

Dr Nat, You have to be careful what you wish for when Lake Superior is involved. We wanted a breeze to keep the black flies and mosquitos under control last summer so we got High winds and had to stake the tent back down. It was actually lifting up overnight on the edges while we were sleeping.

By Heikki (Heikki) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 01:14 pm:

Definitely spring in da Yoop, eh? Part of the animal kingdom going through their mating ritual. Young roosters strutting their stuff for the chicks. Oh, to be young again!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 02:39 pm:

I feel like Paul Harvey...... "and now, the rest of the story"!!

What Dr. Nat is leaving out of her story is that she had jeans on the entire time, and when the front came through, she begged (more like demanded) one of her students to give her his sweatshirt to stay warm.

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 03:55 pm:

I've dove many times off those rocks! I was on the swim and dive team at NMU. When we showed up at "Black Rocks" everyone would just sit back in awe! However, the water was too cold for me this time a year. We always went at the beginning of school in Late August and September.

It's definitly worth a visit around Labor Day, but I don't recommend a Memorial Day plunge.

By Jo Ann, Hancock (Djmasters) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 03:55 pm:

That reminds me of a story my daughter told me awhile back....She was a student at NMU and had her little sister who was 12 or 13 at the time over for the weekend...they of course went to the rocks...Well my younger daughter has no fear and of course...jumped off the rocks like there was nothing to it. As she jumped off my older daughter over heard one of the other NMU macho boys says S**t now I HAVE to jump....Of course these boys didnt know that my younger daughter ended up holding the UP diving record for two years during high school.....
We still chuckle about that story.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 04:08 pm:

Lorelei, That is SISU, NMU Students know how to live! made that dive many times myself- great fun!

69Toot, If we're goin smelt dippin, and of course we have to bite the head off the first one we catch, I'll bring the JD to wash er down!

Great memories!

NMU class of 80

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 08:04 pm:

I love the reaction of the guy in the last picture! That would be my reaction, too, if I even got that far. I do not do well with cold water--I never have. But, then you have to realize that I bought a wet suit so I could water ski Memorial Weekends when we lived in Texas. Even the lakes here in the Lower Peninsula never get as warm as those in Texas do for Memorial Weekend; that says nothing of Lake Superior! I'm not sure how much of that is bravery, & how much of it is...who knows what? It's not my cup of tea, anyway.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 09:18 pm:

It has been so warm and unusually hot in the U.P. these last few days. The lake is a welcoming sight for us UP here! Gotta love it. I know I do! As well of alot of others do!
