Before moving to the U.P., somehow I had never really noticed flowers. Must be something about the air here which enhances ones awareness.

Good morning from soggy Indiana. I totally agree with what the sign says. There is something about the air in Copper country!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:12 am:

The Eagle Harbor cam looks so serene this morning--and no snow! I love crossing the Big Mac and getting out of the car and inhaling! I notice the difference in the air all across the UP and I can imagine it even as I sit here.

Where was/is this sign located?? I remember seeing it, just can't remember where. I wonder if the residents of Houston ever dream of a sign like this being posted in their town???

We've already had ozone action days here this past month and are forcasting another one for Sunday. Not a nice time to be outside when one of these happens, especially for people who are sensitive to it..... like me :-(

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 11:45 am:

Good Morning, Everyone, from foggy, rainy mid-Michigan!

Capt Paul, believe it or not, Houston did not always have an air quality problem. Air quality was not a problem while we lived down there. True, areas southeast of Houston (the Pasadena, Deer Park, Texas City, et al) had some problems with air quality because of some of the oil refineries & chemical plants back then, but it did not creep into Houston. My friends who live in Houston and the Freeport areas have told me that has changed over the many years since we moved to Michigan. The large increases in industry and population in the greater Houston area over the years have changed things and have hurt the air quality. I am really sorry to hear that. I have not been there in a number of years, so I have not seen it first hand.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 12:26 pm:

It's still not bad here year around like some cities though. In the winter time (or what Houston calls a winter), the air quality is really good except for maybe 1 or 2 days when the PM2.5 kicks up from the pollen. It's only when the summer months hit and the air becomes stagnant that air quality becomes a real issue, especially with ozone. I work about 3 miles from downtown and on some of the worst summer days, you can't see any of the skyscrapers and can barely see MinuteMaid Park.

I'm not sure about the city government, but I know the state is taking a very active role in trying to improve the air here in Houston, and especially in Austin where that town has just exploded in population over the last 10 years. Right now, I'm very heavily involved in a project to control benzene readings on the Houston ship channel. Readings at that monitoring station are not only the highest in Texas, but the highest in the nation!! Needless to say, I never have a dull moment around here. As far as what's causing those readings, it's still up in the air...... ;-)

On a lighter note, what the $%#@ happened to the Wings last night!!!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 01:02 pm:

I don't remember where this particular sign is, but a lady in Aura has one with the same sentence on the driveway to her home on Keweenaw Bay.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 01:22 pm:

Ha, ha, Cap'n Paul...that was over my head...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 01:46 pm:

The Wings had a 1 minute lapse in intensity!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 02:02 pm:

I'm pretty sure that sign was just as you're entering Houghton from Chassell just before the Tech campus. On the right side of road.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 02:06 pm:

That explains why I cannot remember that sign, I head into Houghton the back side of the hill up Paradise Rd and go thru Hurontown. Very rarely do I cross the Tech campus. Nice View on the backside of the hill!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 03:33 pm:

Yep, the sign was on the Tech campus coming from Chassell.

By RCW (Rcw) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 04:15 pm:

There used to be one of those sign at the entrance to the Houghton Co Airport on US41 also
