You ever notice how a lot of U.P. establishments are named after the original proprietor? Slim's Restaurant, Zik's Bar, Stump's Tavern, ...Syl's Cafe, which was the subject of the Pasty Cam on this day back in 1999.

Actually, I think I took this shot the day before when Edie and I drove to Ontonagon to meet with the folks at Maple Manor.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 09:43 am:

and the reason the Pasty Cammers aren't having coffee clatch here this morning was.....?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 10:36 am:

That's a great question, Margaret! I miss it. It's warmer here today--it's supposed to get up near 40! But then, who knows what tomorrow will bring. Right now, the National Weather Service is predicting accumulating snows in the neighborhood of 2 to 4 inches. Ugh! Enough already. Will the real spring show its face really soon, please?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 12:52 pm:

We have sunshine down here, finally. I want more good weather.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 12:59 pm:

In case there was a misunderstanding, our weather here tody is fairly nice. The snow accumulation garbage is predicted for tomorrow. :-(

I'm sorry to see all of those baseball games have to be canceled on account of the cold weather or snow. That's a bummer, & I don't even watch baseball--I just somewhat keep track of the standings.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 03:42 pm:

Oh goodie--we now have a Winter Storm Watch, for 4 to 8 inches of snow, beginning tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow night! We really don't need that...Is it possible that Thurs will be a snow day here? That would be crazy!

I know--those of you who live in the UP don't have a ton of sympathy. My son was grousing about 2 feet of snow on the ground in Houghton. But, we aren't used to this stuff this late in April... :-) Oh my, Michigan weather!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 03:57 pm:

We're under a watch here in MN also, 5 to 11 is what they're calling for. All we're doing is sending MI the leftovers. (Not our fault that someone keeps overfilling the tray on the trip east) Mr. Deb

Thanks Bjmilford. Interesting stuff.

Syl's Cafe, which is named after my aunt Sylvia Laitala who, with husband Sulo, made a go of the successful restaurant after various unsuccessful business ventures including milk and farm products deliveries, candy business, and operation of a farm on the former property called the "Poor Farm" in Ontonagon. The Ontonagon Museum has some interesting records and photos which she donated to the museum.

Very interesting. I will have to check out the Ontonagon Museum
this summer. Thanks for sharing that information.

Syl's was always the BEST place to eat when I lived there. The very BEST pasties! It used to be called Syl's Country Kitchen, I believe. Either way, it was delicious home cookin'!!
