The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is pretty in any season. But Brian and Shawn Malone snapped quite a shot with the white covering against the backdrop of the darkened skies. With coloring like that, the red painted beacon stands out quite well.

The second photo from Karl Berg is of course Copper Harbor Lighthouse. A few more sunny days and that icy frame will melt away. Before you know it, both of these lighthouse grounds will be open once again and guided tours will start up for the season, so be sure to mark them as "must see" locations on your list of "things to do" in the U.P. Until then, there's a wealth of history on these lighthouses at Seeing the Light, and much more when you put "lighthouse" in the Pasty Cam Archive search page.

Fantastic pictures!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 05:53 am:

Great lighthouse pictures, Mary, Bryan & Shawn Malone & Karl Berg! I was wondering what that interesting white frame was, Mary! Thanks for the clues.

I love lighthouse picts--thanks for sharing! (I do have a lighthouse license plate for my car.)

I love lighthouses too. I have a couple of little replicas (along with
replicas of freighters) in my classroom. I encourage my students to
think of people who are "lighthouses" for them in their lives.

Every time I'm UP, I try to make sure to spend time near the
lighthouse in my home town, Marquette. I love the dramatic dark
sky in today's photo.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 07:02 am:

I have quite a few little lighthouse replicas here, most are Michigan lighthouses. Though I do have a few from Canada, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. I have some of the larger ones that light up too. And then of course I have my Thomas Kinkade ones and my collection of plates. I've become a lighthouse fanatic. They're just so amazing. I have 3 HUGE lighthouse books sitting on my ottoman in the living room that are there for me to see whenever the mood strikes me. You wouldn't believe the beautiful lighthouses all over the world. So any time you want to show lighthouse pictures here on pasty, that's fine with me.

It's hard to top a pasty cam photo, but these two are both amazingly beautiful.

What a perfect framing for the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, really neat shot!

By Cindy, Now in New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 08:43 am:

Good morning,
Lighthouses always make my day! What beautiful photos! Thanks for giving me a good start to this Friday, the 13th.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:18 am:

Those are simply magnificent shots! So beautiful! I love to be reminded of the beauty and uniqueness of OUR Upper Peninsula. I wouldn't want to be from anywhere else.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:22 am:

Kosk, that is a wonderful thing that you teach your students. I think that most of them would always think of that when they see a lighthouse or picture of one.
These are really great pictures of lighthouses.

By Marcia H. (Livinindenver) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:29 am:

I love the colors in the first shot.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:35 am:

We try to see as many lighthouses as possible too, we love them.

By doug 6540 (Cwo) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:43 am:

What great photos !!! One look at these pics makes one realize what God has created and why we all return to the UP to enjoy all this splendor !
Easy to understand why one wants to return to their birthplace as we grow older... we get that unexplainable urge to go home.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 09:56 am:

Here in Esky the Delta Co. Historical Society owns and runs the
lighthouse. My wife volunteers in the archives (an old Coast
Guard building right behind the lighthouse) once a week. They
have more stuff on the old lighthouse and the lighthouse
keepers! My wife really likes to go over there this time of year.
She can look out at the big oreboats passing by on their way
inbound and outbound from the docks and also see all the
ducks near shore. Tomorrow we have to go to the Portage
Marsh south of town to count sandhill cranes for a survey.
These are very tough jobs, but someone has to do them, eh?

For those of you who love lighthouses (and I do too) I would like to recommend reading "A Salty Piece of Land" by Jimmy Buffet. It isn't about an Up North lighthouse but a lighthouse does play a key role in the book. It has good life lessons too - it was very enjoyable. The Marquette lighthouse photo is now my desktop photo - what a great shot. Thanks.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 10:58 am:

Kris, I read that too and also enjoyed it.

Speaking of great pictures, did anyone see the Weather
Channel this morning? They included a picture from
Calumet, Michigan. I guess we must have a lot of
snow!!

Happy Friday the 13th to everyone!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 01:13 pm:

Hi
I was checking out the Soo webcams & saw a couple of freighters passing each other, one upbound on the way to the locks and the other downbound after passing through. The lighthouses will indeed by seen by the ships now.

Charles in Esky, I saw a pair of sandhill cranes Easter weekend while I was on the way to my cousin's house. They were walking across a cornfield.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

As a lover of lighthouses I wonder what they make of those who are fasinated and intrigued by lighthouses! Must be a psycological meaning that we feel about the tug to our souls where lighthouses are concerned! The loniness, the sense of independence for those who survived that lifestyle? The boredom intermingled with the sense of urgency when the keepers try to rescue those in danger! And now we who admire those long ago souls feel their urgancy and lonliness within us. Very interesting thoughts hey?

Check out My Space regarding a song written by a young man about his hometown. The song is "Marquette,MI".

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 07:55 pm:

Thanks, Thumbgardener. I hope so.

Cotton: I would love to hear this song. Any ideas where I can
listen to it?

Here's a link to Matt Sia's Myspace page where you can listen to it.
